Hi I've just joined the site and what fabulous and insightful reading so far... I am starting out in my breeding with the first clutch of three born 6 weeks ago,,they are absolutely beautiful. From a rainbow (from what I've read I think he is?)cock and green hen they produced 2 green (one has alot of yellow around its head and top of wings) and a cobalt.There appears to be some many different colour descriptions!As this is new for me I think the best way to begin is read, read and read and not forgetting this site for advice! I haven't really got my head around the pairing of budgies ie what pairs will produce what colours however I wanted to share my first ever babies with you. I will post some photos when I get a bit more computer savvy with this site! cheers ishtarsands

Good morning everyone,,,yesterday I got some good pictures of the last baby of my first clutch - I have called her (think she will be a girl from the more white colour upon her cere - but still hard for me to gauge) Wattle as she has alot of yellow on her head and wings....

if you can look at your cock bird under his wing acrossed the top

if its blue from the wingpit along he is not green at all

but a blue bird with a yellow face bigger pics would help

the hen is light green from where i sit

but then

what do i know

 

oh and to me not Opaline at all

Cock is not green at all from where I see it. Looks yellowface cobalt to me and is not Rainbow. Bigger pictures when you can please

HUGE HUGE difference between light green and dark green Squeak

Only one shade difference really, and sometimes through photo's I personally find it harder to tell, as if it is overcast light greens can come up darker.

I agree with GB here. If in doubt don't say anything, it only confuses the issue. Beginners like myself receive so much miss information, it becomes difficult to decipher truth from fallacy.

Rainbow cock

 

 

Rainbow is a term to describe a composite bird. One made up from a combination of yellowface (any type) blue series opaline clearwing (a composite variety, not a specific mutation). Yours isnt one. Sorry

and im sorry but reading back this post

only a shade difference im sorry if i may seem like im picking directly at you

but i am not

a shade difference is a big thing

specially to a colour breedred

if you were to try and breed a mauve for instance you wouldnt just say oh well i have a light blue and umm m lets see

oh i think its a cobalt mm might be light blue sky violet oh oh heak its just one shade off cobalt

(this is an example not true breeding out come )

 

if this was fact you could breed all you like yet never get a mauve only sky blue and sky violet and cobalt's

so i beg to differ but a shade differences is a big thing in breeding

One thing some must learn is....................if you dont know there's no need to feel you have to answer and GUESS. Others who do know will come along. No need to try and answer everything and if one doesnt have enough time or knowledge to help in a topic, leave it for someone else. We have many experts on here who can answer with some degree of knowledge and not have to "guess". In that way the person asking the questions is more likely to get real answers they can rely on.

I took the liberty of taking a few more bigger snaps of "dad" budgie as to working out his colouring- YF Cobalt? I really need to read more on colours,mutations,variations etc

 

 

dad budgie from behind for colouring purposes--being the great protector of mum and the pinkies!!
