The previous inhabitants had a big outdoor aviary full of budgies, and have collected all but two (two very pretty yellow females). They promised to come back for them, but that was weeks ago and nothing has happened, and the birds were running out of food and water and there was a big padlock on the door, so our friend was asking us if we wanted them or knew someone who did. I went and inspected them and found no food or water whatsoever. Both my partner and I are into animal rights and all that stuff, so we broke into the aviary and provided them with some water. I later went and got some seeds which I will give to our friend later tonight so he can feed them. We also agreed to take them.... I had budgies as a teenager, in a small indoor cage, so I'm somewhat familiar with them.. So now we need to organise somewhere to keep them. I'm relcutant to keep them indoor in a cage which is bound to be much smaller than their current aviary, because I can imagine they would have grown up in their outdoor aviary and don't seem to like humans that much, so I'm afraid they would be miserable indoors. On the other hand, we live in the suburbs and have neighbours all around us. Will the birds be too noisy to keep outdoors? Any advice will be greatly appreciated... Link to comment

I have budgies in my yard and their sweet chatter is actually uite pretty and to most is not intrusive at all. Where do you live, if you are in Melbourne I might be able to help with something Link to comment

No, we will have to build our own aviary, and I was just looking online for a simple but effective way to do it, and think I've found a setup that will work.. It's basically just a frame and netting with a roof and some form of shelter on 2 sides, plus perches and some kind of box to hide in.. Sound good? We're in Brisbane:) Link to comment

Have they poopy bottoms and can you feel their keelbone on their chest. If they have poopy bottoms it will need to be cleaned away and they will need some warmth like a lamp with 25-40 watt globe and some calcivet in their water for a few days. Link to comment

I can get everything tonight if I want, but more likely tomorrow, as we have plans for tonight. Already looked on ebay but quite frankly am not willing to spend $200 on a proper aviary. I intend to keep them, not rehome them, but if you think they will be fine in an indoor cage without being miserable, then that's prolly what I would go for, simply because it's easier and cheaper. I didn't really get a close look at them, but they look perfectly healthy, they don't look skinny or anything. Our friend said they were 'running low' on food, so most likely they ran out in the last day or so, because he was convinced there was some food left in there when I went to check on them. There were also heaps of seeds on the ground, so they might be able to find something among those to eat. Link to comment

Check them more closely for signs of ill health...especially their bottoms. Its like taking temperature in people but with budgies you check their butts and poops. Link to comment

How did I miss that.. hmmm. I will keep an eye on it and bid on it if the price doesn't increase too much. Thanks:) I can't remember which store I saw it at, but some kind of bargain store nearby had a fairly large bird cage pretty cheap a few weeks ago. If I can't get a proper aviary I might go with that... I basically just want them out of where they are now and into a place where I can give them some proper care asap... Link to comment

Good on you for taking the budgies. You mentioned earlier you would give them a box to hide in... they don't need one. This will encourage them to breed, which you don't need. Good luck with them... We have loads of information here, and be sure to ask anything. If it were me, I'd maybe keep them in a nice big cage. They have some at JJ Aviaries: JJ Aviaries/Petmania. BF2 is the one I have, and happily keep two budgies in mine. They are located in Sydney but may be able to ship it to you. Link to comment

It only opened a couple days ago so they only had one big galvanised type cage with stand, and some very small ones. Nothing had any prices, so I asked but was told that she had no idea, and I'd have to ask the manager. So I said 'okay, can you get her?' And she said 'no, she's in the grooming room at the moment' so we said 'fine, we'll wait' and we waited and waited and it took ages and we finally decided to leave. The big one looked too expensive anyway, and the small ones were too small. So I will look at a different pet store either tomorrow or Wednesday. At least I gave the seeds to our friend so the birds have something to nibble on for a few days. What do you use to transport them in? Can I get a little box or something at the pet store do you think? Link to comment
