This hen was the first to start incubating - Its her first time and she was so excited that she didn't want to stay out of the box while i took pictures. I hope she does a good job.

I was very lucky. I was hoping that i would get a chance to see one hatch at least, but i never expected it to be the first one too - it has made my day

I will check it again before dark armed with Libby's famous crop milk, just in case she hasn't fed yet.

Doesn't matter how many times you've breed it's special each and every time , and this is your first time cabinet breeding, even more exciting . When are those twins due to hatch, I know the odds aren't great but I can't help but feel excited in the prospect than you maybe able to post photo's of actual twin budgie chicks :happy-dancing: , and all the best of luck with all your other eggs .

I am sorry to report, the double yolker has shown no signs of fertility at all - but it is still in the nest, because you just never know :happy-dancing:

The goofy hen hasn't fed the bub. I have given it a feed of Libby's crop milk, but now i am really worried about is its going to be 1 degree tonight (of all nights!!)

 

Do i foster it off tonight or leave it?? Both parents are first timers

Congrats on the 2nd bub. I really dont know about the first, I keep reading on the forum that sometimes it takes 24 hours before the hen starts to feed the baby. Maybe you could put it in with the other newborn for tonight, and transfer it back after its mother has had the 2nd in the clutch? Thats just a guess, not knowlege or experience

I'm like Sunny... I'm not 100% sure mate... maybe foster it to the other nest tonight and put it back tomorrow??? I'm no expert but I'm sure someone with more experience will be on to help you out. Good luck and congratulations on Bub 2!

Thanks so much for your replies, for now I decided to leave the bub with mum as she is sitting well and i gave it a feed. I will see how it is in the morning and if she is still not feeding then i will probably foster it out before tomorrow night.

Great news! This morning lil bub 1 is still active and healthy ....

....but not fed so I fed him again and left him with mum - she has until tonight to feed him or he is getting fostered.

I have my fingers crossed that mum of bub 1 gets her act into gear and works out the feeding thing, I watched my first chick of a first time pair die (wasn't quite up with the info about supplement feeding them then and at the time had no foster parents, it would be a different story now), but she came good by the time her second chick arrived and turned out to be a great Mum raising 3 very healthly chicks :yes: - think it may have taken awhile for her crop milk to come through, so maybe your hen may be the same. Thanks for letting me know about the double yolker .It was a long shot.

Twins maybe ? Hard to get them to point of hatching as they most often die in shell first, BUT if they make it to hatching it takes a lot to get them strong and feeding once hatched. Be prepared if you get to that stage to top them up with their first couple of feeds.

kaz had a great twin pair. They were very cute... from memory one was male one was female. the male lived longer than the female... but they were both very cute. Correct me if I'm wrong at anytime Kaz...
