What's Better Male Or Female
I too would get a male. I have found my male budgies tend to imitate the wild birds more, though I do have one female that does a pretty good job.

My Plans For My Aviary
aww thanks The cable tie things? That's what I ended up using for attaching them to the aviary mesh. It looks a bit funny and I think the youngest hen (blue rung) will have great joy in destroying it ahaha she loves all sorts of different things - very playful little youngster. Now all I need to do is recruit some people to help me move existing aviary over and start building and attaching the other one! yayayay!

My Plans For My Aviary
I made my first doweling perch today.Quite proud of myself It's not fabulous, seeing as I have a tiny cordless drill and no saw to cut the dowels, but it does the job and the birds seem to like it. I only have to make another three now I will take photos tomorrow as by the time I finished putting it up - the lighting wasn't right.

Winters Comming Batten Down The Hatch
They are great GB! Such a great idea and a cheaper way of doing things if, like myself, you can't afford the cafe blinds. I love it! Your birds are gorgeous and look very happy.

My Plans For My Aviary
okay, well after today's lovely freak thunderstorm and flooding, I have found the aviary roof leaks in a few places. I have also decided that the open end of the aviary isn't such a flash idea as the rain seemed to like coming in that way. It will only work if it had a cover on it that could be opened and closed. SO I shall take the wire mesh from open top end, and close it with another bit of roofing tin. Bonus with that is I will have another bit of wire mesh that I can use for the junior flights or for breeding cabinets :D The FLOOR suffered as the bottom of the aviary isn't sealed to the concrete pad. So I have decided to place 3-5 cm rectangular piping along the floor and place pavers on top and act as a false floor so the water runoff will go into the pipes under the paving. This way I will be able to level the floor as well. I am not allowed to level it with concrete or anything so this is my next best option. Hopefully it will work. I will be putting sides on the aviary too so water doesn't get in. Most of the birdroom will be on the concrete but the back fence side will be on pavers. As the concrete pad stops a metre before the fence, I have to improvise with the pavers which then will allow roof rain runoff to seep into the ground and the drain, rather than in the birdroom. Does any of this make sense? Also I am in the process of making some dowel perches - does anyone know where I can get some clasps or clips that will hold them in place on the frame? And how would I fix them to the aviary? I am doing this all on my own so I am trying to figure out best options. Sorry if none of this makes sense.

My Aviary....start To Finish
Oh yes I've done that I made sure I did that earlier today, when it was slightly sprinkling. I am planing on changing the floor abit but will go to my aviary thread and talk about it there

My Aviary....start To Finish
Your place too Kaz? We had a massive thunderstorm here and we had water coming inside the main bedroom window, Charlize's bedroom window, a dining room light fitting and the whole patio was under about 5cm of rain. Our empty rainwater tank *2500L* is now a quarter full and rising. And my poor birds - silly things first thought they would have a lovely shower in the rain when it started, and looked like drowned rats - then came the massive downpour and I just want to towel dry each one and tuck it in for the night. The floor is wet, which I was expecting as it's not sealed. They have a few leaks in their roof where I think I will need to silicone and I am definitely going to change the end roof from wire mesh to sold tin roofing. I think there is just way too much rain coming in there. Kaz, I hope everything plans out well for yours

Supplements
Well they're both good I think this is how they work, someone please correct me if i'm wrong. Breeding aid helps with the production of eggs and the embryos using fatty acids. The hen needs these fatty acids to continue having body store - if she doesn't, her body stores get depleted and the breeding results can be reduced. Calcivet - has the calcium that the birds need to form strong bones and also for egg laying. If a hen doesn't have calcium supplements, she will use up her own calcium supplies which will decrease her strong bone formation. Also her eggs may become soft causing her to be unable to pass an egg. So I would think that both would be best. But again, maybe someone will need to correct me? Hopefully I haven't given any wrong information

Is This A Good Breeding Setup?
which is why I myself haven't started and breeding pairs yet. I've waited until I have had money and then gone completely nuts at Bunnings and Salvage yards getting all perching/nestbox/breeding cabinet materials, and been buying aviaries when I've had the chance If I had of started my birds breeding now or in the past i think I would have had major heartache and given up. mr hopeful, start off slow and work your way to your goal It does take time, effort and yes funds too, but the final achievement of happy breeding birds makes it all worthwhile

Pink Budgie
I'm sorry, call me strange, but I don't see the fascination of a pink budgie. It looks way too odd. That one that you put the link to JB - I know it's a joke - but the blue is so dirty, not clean and clear like most sky blues - it looks more like it is meant to be a stuffed toy rather than a beautiful lovely budgie. If there were a real pink budgie somewhere - it would be interesting to see, but I still would never want one. So am I strange? HAhaha maybe that shouldn't be answered

Auction At Revesby Nsw
JB, I haven't heard back from the person who was going to bid for me, and also I think I may be wasting everyone's time as I don't have a large amount of money to spend. There were 4 hens I was looking at, and I was going to put all the money on the first one - if that wasn't successful, then put that money on the second one etc until I could have possibly gotten one. I don't think I'd have been successful in any of them, but wouldn't have known until I tried.

Is This A Good Breeding Setup?
I don't think you'd be able to use that one for breeding either. You still need to attach the nestbox to the outside of the cage and I don't think the top is suitable. a) It looks like the birds could get stuck between the wire It is curved so the birds can't fly around the top properly. And they don't have any shelter from the elements of the weather. But that's just my opinion, I don't know 100% if it is or isn't suitable, one of the others will be able to tell you
