Insurance
I don't have insurance but when one of my birds is sick I quickly act. An infecious disease can quickly wipe out your flock. I have about $280.00 in birds plus add to that the emotional aspect of losing my birds it's not worth it.

Air Tempature
How cold does it get there Lovey?
-
Air Tempature
Extremely high temps are no problem for budgies. The wild budgies live in areas that get up to 45deg c in summer with little or no water. But as eterri said they don't like quick changes in temperature.

What do i do now?!?
When I started, I didn't have any breeding birds just two pets. I then started to find out about what to do. Part of the reseach lead me here. I started to set up the aviary and the breeding box 4 months before I acually started to breed them. All that time finding out the right way and wrong way to do things and what to expect. One thing to remember is that the budgies don't read. Yes the book says 18 days incubation, but the budgies don't know that. Sometimes it is 19 and from when did thet really start incubating? As Many will tell you. Get the knowledge first then start to breed. You have made a ver important step and that is coming here.

Will They Ever?
Avian Science is the brand I use. It comes from the pet store or vet. It is a liquid calcium supplement that you mix up in water. It would be a calcium or iodine "Bell" in the shape of a fruit. They are okay. Some times I think the items are made to sell to us rather the budgies. Budgie looks at banana *oh good she has given me a banana that tastes like old chalk* :hap:

Will They Ever?
Bek you should start to see the female inspection the nest box soon. When she starts to going in and out of the box frequently, count 9 to 12 days and you should have your first egg. Make sure she has a supply of calcium. Fresh fruit and veg and some egg and biscuit mixture. Fresh water everyday. I grate some carrot, broccoli, add some snow pea sprouds and some sprouted mung bean seeds and them mix in about a table spoon of Egg and Biscuit Mix. Put this in in the morning and remove the uneaten part at lunch time. (feeds about 12 birds) The eggs will be laid two days apart...roughly. The incubation time is approx 18 day to the first hatch. Incubation may not start until the 2nd or 3rd egg is laid. That is normal. Good luck and if you need to know something ...Ask.

Is My Budgie Sick?
It sounds like she has a husk in her throat. If this is the case she will get rid of it. So long as she isn't shaking her head left to right. This is the throwing up action. I agree with the others to get her check out. Check her frequently, you may find her okay now.

Best to feed them the Green Leaves not the stork. Not much neutriants in the stork.

How To Tell Between Agood Egg From A Bad Egg?
Natouk, it takes approx 18 days for the eggs to hatch from the time the hen starts to Incubate them. She may not start until the 2nd or 3rd one is laid.

Can Budgies Changes Their Sex?
Michael lets clarify "Vet" some vets do not understand Budgerigars or Parrots. That is why we surgest you take them to an Aviarian Vet that speciallise in Parrots. A budgerigar can appear to change sex a couple of times a year. Especially a Hen. She goes through her breeding cycle and at time to some may appear to have a blue cere. But she is still a hen. I think if you go to the FAQ Eterri has an issue on that question.Budgie FAQs

Genetic Lesson Num 3
Can i throw in a funny one....Green is not a colour in budgies. It is a perception. But that is another lesson Nerwen can do.

Thanks Paul.H I've got to get around to tidying it some more. Thanks Rainbow. She has been in Isolation from the other bids all week. They have been on probotics. Can't give a bird antibiotics and probotics at the same time. She can go back into the Avairy tomorrow. Hey just a thought ....... if you go to an Itilian resturant and order Pasta and Antipatsa do you get full

Thoes Who Know There Colors
The Fallow Mutation, a gene must produce red eyes in the adult bird. be reccessed in inheritance and change all black pigments to light brown shades without altering any other pigmentation. Because black and grey are reduced to light brown, the bird loses any deep colour of green and blue, becoming more yellow or white in appearance and lighter in colour over all. Does that help.

Big Budgies
I took Greeny down to the vets (avian) on Monday. She developed a funny sneeze. He thought it was just a small respiratory infection and gave her an antibiotic shot. She is going great. He gave her the once over and weight her at 40 grams. Told me that she was in good order. He weighed her by puting her in a paper bag and then on the scales. The bag was well ventilated and the darkness calmed her down. Here is her Stats.
