Are Some Mutations Shorter Lived Than Others?
Eterri I don't completly agree. I do agree that inbreeding can cause problems in the bird but i couldn't say that a particular mutations would be any less healther than another. As for English Budgies. They are of the larger size for show. We discussed this in another topic. I believe that the obesity of the show budgie is not as healthy as it should be. Hath would be the best to comment on this thou. As far as in breeding in the current Budgie Pool. They are probibly as "Clean" as we are. Our life span has moved from 42 to 84 in the last 2000 years. .......... and I don't really mind the 6 fingures and extra toe... :dbb1: Terms are put forward as a general observations.

Breeding Genetics
So, starting simply, from the top we’ll start today’s lessons on basic colours. Would I be correct in thinking that: A. The original/normal colour for budgies is Green/Yellow? Yes but remember that Green is not a true colour and needs a combination of Blue and Yellow. B. The.. uh, ‘common’ underlying (or something!) colour for budgies is blue, and it is the presence of a yellow pigment which makes the: • Budgie green - (Blue + Yellow = Green) You got it • The head/face green C. The absence of the yellow pigment makes: You got that also • The budgie stay blue • The head/face stay white - (Absence of yellow pigment = white) D. The yellow pigment is the dominate allele, and the absence of (white) is the recessive. Is it? An Allele is an Alternative gene for a particular Locus. Recessive referes to the form of Genetic inheritance followed by a mutant allele If you want to look at the basics of colour pigmentation in Budgerigars, there are three elements. The yellow family pigmentations and the Grey family Pigmentations. The third is the Structural Colour. Where does blue come form you ask if there is only yellow and grey family pigmentations. The structural colour of a feather is how it effects the light that is emited. The grey pigmentation reflected through a particular Structural Colour in the feather produces Blue. Just like the Tyndall Effect - Blue Sky. Different Structural Colour will allow the Grey pigment to look grey as in a grey budgie. Genetics in budgies is very complex with sex linked genes Dominant, Recessive and Co-dominant mutations. As Lin said Nerwen is very good with patience and a general discription of the terminology. She would be best to help.

Female Feeding Male
Be very careful a female will only feed a male when HE is sick. Just check to see if she isn't begging and not feeding.

Pairing, Breeding, Aviary!
Hi Kirby, Budgies have a memory of about 7 days. If you split your pairs for that period and then reintroduce a new mate to your female, she may accept him. Budgies are a bit of a breeding machine. (as some of us know...Phoebe ) Introducing new genes in a good idea but make sure you quarantine them for 30 - 45 days. You don't want any nasty buggs being introduced into your flock. Your aviary sounds good. I prefer closed breeding so that I don't have trouble with other females. I also keep the babies in a different cage for a month before going into the main aviary. You can check to see if they are eating and drinking by themselves. Sounds like a great set up. If you want a hand reared chick you don't have to go to the trouble of feeding it. Just take it from the nest and play with him for 15mins every day from the age of 20 days. He will adjust to you and when fledge play with him for 30mins in the morning and night.

Daz I Have A Question For You :d
Canker is an infection of the crop and upper and lower intestines. Common to Pidgiens and Canaries. Australia was free of the budgie strain until someone imported a budgie from england that had it. We are unfortunate that we have just got the medication from england but the virus has mutated to one of some resilliance. Bluey has the infection in the crop and mostly the lower intestines. I weighed him yesterday and he had put on 2 grams. Here he is. Here is Bluey and Spangle. There Eggs ................................................................................ .............................................................................. Well I checked on Greeny and Duey. To find that they have had another egg hatch. That makes 4. Greeny Duey She really has become a good mum. I'll update the photos in a couple of days.

Confused.
Can you put up a recent photo of him. If he has changed to brown it could be a sign of a tumour as pixie said. I would have him checked.

Daz I Have A Question For You :d
Hi all back again. Had some holidays and haven't been on. ........but i'm back. Up to date. Greeny & Duey. 6 eggs. 3 have hatched. This is greeny's first clutch so I was a bit worried about the first chick. Greeny didn't seem to be feeding him. I started to feed him every hour with a solution of warm mmilk and egg and biscuit. very diluted. He seemed to like this and got strong enough after the first day to Yell at mum to feed him. She got the idea. 2nd and 3rd chick have been good. no problems. I think I have one clear egg so far. Bluey and Spangle. 4 eggs. 1st to hatch about the 23rd of January. Bluey got sick after the first egg was laid so I put him on antibiotics. he picked up a bit but lost weight. I took him to the a great vet near Nerwen and got the bad news....Canker. The whole flock is now on treatment. Don't know how he got it. ....no Karen, it definately wasn't from your birds. They are health and Happy in the aviary. They were in quarrentine when i set bluey and Spangle.. The vet said Bluey has a good chance to beat it. being with Spangle when he contracted it. I have they both togeather. Bluey is the only one to show signs, but I can't be too sure. Spangle seems very happy and healthy and content to sit on the eggs. Bluey seem to like the company. I will weigh him this afternoon to see if there is a change. Lisa, Bob and Jazz (Karen's Birds) Doing great after quarentine. Lisa seems to like Razzel, Bob and Jazz are going well. Now you are up to date. Photos to come...this afternoon. :grbud:

What Variety Of Birds Do I Need To Breed To Get A Gray
The Grey colour is not a primary colour. You will need a blue and a greygreen. It is not a sex linked coour so don't worry about which sex is which colour. Start with a recessed Blue and a dominet Grey green. Breed the Greygreen x Blue Off spring you hope to have is a 50% Greygreen / (split to) blue. Breed the Greygreen/blue x Blue Off spring you hope will be 25% Grey. If you breed a Greygreen/blue x Greygreen/blue off spring you hope will be 25% Grey From grey you can cross with other colours to get cinnamon, Fallow, Lime, Dilute and Faded because the grey pigmentation is effected.

Not A Good Cage
That is a great cage. It has plenty of room. Four story budgie cage. I also love the playgym.

Photos Required
Guys we need some photos of a "Good" cage and a "Bad" cage. Here is the requirements. They must be your photo, not off the web. We must be allowed to use they in the main web site you an article I have writen on Pet Budgerigars. A good cage is a rectangular one with perches running cross wise. A bad cage is a tall thin cage. Or one with rust and sharp wire. If you can post them at 300 pixels in width I would be very much appriciated.

Breeding Or Not Breeding?
Hi Wendy and welcome to the forum. You hen should start incubating on the second or third egg. Count 18 days from that time for the eggs to hatch. The next egg will be in two days time. If this her first clutch the eggs might be a bit off time. Don't worry too much about that. Enjoy the forum. Daz

New Signature
....just trying things.. It didn't work. :hap: I'll try latter. Note: If you want to check to see if your signature complys, just right click it and pick properties. If it is greater than 400 x 200 pixels it's too big.

Budgie Tips! List Them All In Here!
Tip. Feed your Budgerigars their Fruit and Vegetables in the mid afternoon and remove it before night. That way it stops it going off through the hotest part of the day. If you forget to remove it in the afternoon it will spoil less over night. Just remove it in the morning.
