Yes he had the sand examined and it was found to have bacteria. He through the whole lot out. He now has shavings in the breeding cabinets and only tiles in the flights.
  2. Well I have some answers coming in... There is thought that they could be Spangle Recessive pieds. The DEC can mask spangle. The oterh thought is that they are known as Penguin Recessives. An old term for very badly marked DECs. I'll be speaking to a Cookie tomorrow regarding these birds. Daivd Cook has been breeding DECs for many years and these could be traced bak to his stock. I'll let you know the out come.

The 12mm is to give more strength to the nest boxes. The shavings will be "raked" over every two weeks for a few months and then recycled to the garden. By keeping a close eye on it I should be able to determin the regularity of changes. I also think the weather will play a big part in it. High humidity and rain in Summer may make it a requirement to change more often.
  4. Well the two breeders in the back ground have bred Greywings. One was the national winner in Melbourne. So It won't supprise me if there is some greywing in there. But it doesn't look like it in the grey green.
  5. It's the pied gene. Youcan get different actions from that gene. I have a Dominant Pied cock with different colours on his cere due to the gene.
  6. ...Kaz. you asking me they were black not plum

Arrr there is a trick... No dust in the air. The birds can fly down and up with out causing disturbance. When you put in the the shavings make it about two inches thick and walk over it. It flattens down and stays put. Also don't use the fine dust type. I learnt this one at Tasmania. One of the very good reasons to get about and see how others are doing it. This has been down now for nearly two weeks and as you can see - No shavings in the water or the seed container. (Though I did raise the water container, just in case) I have been told not to use sand as the birds can gorge on it and cause impaction.

I decided to put wood shavings on the floor of the flights There is about two inches. Some of the junior birds. They seem to like it better. off and breeding again with the new nest boxes. Using 12mm ply. The top right is one left over from last year.
  9. Interesting isn't it. I have emailed the photos to the breeder that got me into DECs to see what he thinks. The big question is.. can a DEC mask Spangle?
  10. The Darkeye Clear came from a Darkeyed Clear white / opaline Cock to a Grey /recessive pied hen. As far as I know, no Spangle.???
  11. These two chicks have turned up in one of my nests. The Grey Green ____________________________________________________________ The Grey ____________________________________________________________ This is one of the other chicks. A Darkeyed Clear. Hen is a Recessive Pied Grey Green Cock is a Darkeyed Clear that could be split Opaline. I believe that they are both Darkeyed Clears with a BIG fault. Body Suffusion that has made it way into the wing. ......Your thoughts?

I picked up some AGM Budgie 50Ks for $60 just to top up the supply. I've changed from mixing as it is geting hard to get all the types of seed some times.

I'd keep to the 08 breed hens and no older than an 07 cock. Too much trouble with older one. If the very good 06 cocks came in cheap, say $100 - $150 might be worth a go for one or two eggs.

Jenn do you want to drop over for some replacements?
  17. He's a Cock bird but I'd love to see more photos of him. I am very curious as to what variety he is? He has an orange beak and pink feet so he should be a recessive. I am thinking greywing but would love to see his wings.
  18. Lets keep a watch on this one.. I will be good to know
  19. do you mean breed that bird? Yes I did, he came from two spagles with iris rings. The interesting thing about this bird... is that the beak is orange and the feet is pink. So would have to say that it is recessive. Being recessive it can only be a Dark eyed clear, recessive pied, Greywing, clearwing, dilute, fallow ... My guess is that it's a darkeyed clear with iris rings. DF Spangles would have a grey beak and feet and a blue cere.
  20. with visible iris rings? another type of recessive pied? The DEC don't have visible iris rings. That is what I would have said but it states the iris rings are visible. what do you think pie? DEC maybe he hasn't read the book yet I have Double factor Spangle with out iris rings.

Thanks for changing the photos to links. You have a recessive pied light green hen.
  22. Yes she is to be shown only in the Recessive pied class.
  23. Look at the beak colour. That will give the clue.
  24. I keep the heavily marked Hens for breeding. They still throw clean offspring. I had hopes on a light green cock that is 09 bred but he's looking like a B59 bomber. I'll try to get some photos. Speaking with Alister in Burnie.. the gene seems spasmatic in the marking areas. So you need to look past it and look at the bird. Take the bird in it's form and not the standard (eg markings) to breed with.

    Breeding area is 3m x 2m
