Culled means to remove. I'd say in this case Kaz means to remove her from your breeding team.

One only chick to this pair. There were two. BUT one had severely splayed legs and actually had ********* growth issues also. At age 9 days looked only 3 days old. Culled the baby. Sorry to hear that Kaz. How's the other eggs looking?

So is best to use the dab behind the head rather than dilution and dipping?
  4. ......... someone is going to breed Contenental clearflights.,. If you pair the darkeyed clears to the normals you will get a percentage of Clearflights. All the offspring will be split Recessives. Pair these off spring to either recessives or to the darkeyes and you'll get a percentage of darkeyes.
  5. It is such a waste. We are eager to get that new bird into the aviary or into breeding that we do the short cuts. The last batch of birds I bought were in quarantine for the full amount and on Doxy. At the Nationals, we had a talk from Dr Rob Marshall. It was so good it converted some of the skeptics. He believes that if we can control Psittacosis and French Moult the rest of the problems can be easily controlled. The first and best way to control these two diseases is to stop then getting into your flights and aviaries. Prevention is better than cure.
  6. Over the past few months, we have all seen the importance of Quarantine. I believe that being Aussies is the big problem. We have that "She'll be right" mentality that gives us that carefree feeling in life. But when working with livestock. you must be so careful. I have gotten off likely last year with my birds and have learned the lesson. It saddens me that some very good friends are having to go through it.

Budgerigars as do all animals need Vitamin D3. The best way to get this is via the UV-B rays from the sun. UV-B can not pass through Glass or Clear plastic so need to be in direct view. There are other ways, not as good, to get vitamin D3. One is with the fluorescent fittings noted above. One is with Suppliments. The best way is direct sunlight. Below is a link I wa given by Don Burke. It is a very good read and I suggest that you all do so. Don Burke's Vitamin D Sick Bird Break Through.
  8. Kaz, I am so sorry to be reading this. The test for PBFD can not be done in Australia. I have one done two years ago. The DNA sample was sent to South Africa to check. It was $100 then. Let's hope that you can stop the spread to Ken's other birds and to your budgies. Hopeful this strain is species specific.

I'd go to your nearest good produce store where you can buy premixed seed by the kilo. If they have separate seed mix ask them to mix it for you. I used 2kg of Canary, 1 kg of Fench Millet, 1 kg of Jap millet, 1/2 kg Panicun. This should only cost about $10.00 for 4.5 kgs and will be better than what you get else where.

The SQ Team is housed in a separate areas after the preselections. From there they are taken to the Nationals and are housed as discribed above. On return back to SQ they are placed in Quarrentine untill the breeders pick them up. It is then up to the breeders to carry out their own quarrentine.

Monster Budgies... I like that.. 10 1/2 inch budgies are becoming more common these days.. Kaz is very good when it comes to Sexing the young. You can also get the idea of variety. If it is an Opaline it will have white down. Pieds have discolouring on the skin. etc

Ummm $17 a kg is very very dear. I don't pay any more than $1.60 a kg for my seed. The last lot of seed I bought, 75kg cost me $112.50 thats $1.50 a kg. The seed was Golden Cob Budgerigar 25kg bags.

AOSV is all other STANDARD varieties so you can include Brownwings as well in that section. AOV is for All Other Varieties such as Rainbows which are a composite bird.

You can hold the bird up to the light and spread the wings. The lice may show as spects on the white feathers. But the best way is with a Microscope. You can treat it with Ivomec (Yes Kaz I am converted ) Yes you can get Lice from birds.
