  1. Hi. I have been growing organic vegetables for a few years now and have been feeding them to the birds. I want to try fertilizing this year to see how it works out. I am just wondering if anyone here grows vegetables and feeds them to the birds. If so, What fertilizer do you use that will not harm the birds but still do its job. I am thinking seasol (Seaweed fertilizer) and a few other products might be okay. What do you use? All help is greatly appreciated.

  4. The hen will not even let him in he is that dirty.
  5. It's a risk moving her. She may stop laying, its up to you.
  6. Which one? They are looking really good dave I like the cobalt.
  7. Started in Early december and will end when these chicks leave the breeding cages. Doubt I will breed through winter this year.
  8. Personally I hate moving breeding cages. this has never happened to me but I've been told that the birds will get stressed in new environments and neglect eggs or chicks. Going from a very quiet to a very noisy place would have that effect. It's never happened to me because I've never changed breeding rooms. Its a risk, its up to you if you take it or not.
  9. Thankyou very much for changing the thread title Kaz.
  10. Wont be a problem. They can do 2 clutches per year I believe. No 2 years is not to old, I stop breeding hens at 3-4 or when they show signs of retiring and the cocks can go up to 5-6 years. My friend has a 11 year old male who is still fertile, he doesnt let him raise the chicks though.
  11. Been a while since I posted so I thought I'd do an update. Could a moderator or admin please change my thread title to: Pearce's Budgerigar Breeding Blog Then on the space underneath could you put: With regular updates. Thankyou. The birds are all going very well. another chick hatched today making that 13 chicks so far this year. Grey green hen is now sitting on 3 fertile eggs, hasnt layed any new ones for 4 days. Lets hope these 3 are the best. Pet pair 1 has 3 chicks, 1 green spangle opaline, 1 cobalt or violet recessive pied spangle opaline possible cinnamon (We are still trying to figure out the mutation) and one with no feathers. Aviaries are going well, just finished laying sand in the main one today, birds are loving it. Sealed some holes in the roof aswell and got blinds to block rain coming in. Bought anew 25kg bag of hulled oats today aswell and some sunflower seeds for the cockatiels. I have another shed that I am transfering into an aviary as we speak. I am thinking of either getting finches or a pair of princess parrots. I really love kaz's princess parrots which influenced my decision. I saw some at the pet shop today, not cheap at all. For 1 Pink and green princess parrot they were asking $450. He did not look to healthy either. I bought some triple c antibiotic today aswell so I will start using that also. My fingers are now very sore from typing so I am going to watch law and order. About 80 views away from 10000.

  13. The father alone eats more than all my breeding birds. And he then feeds the mother so she gets dirty aswell. Its a neverending cycle.
  14. If jasmine is over 5 months old then it is a cock. Jackson is a cock also.
  15. Its the skyblue cock and opaline spangle dark green hen, pet types.
  16. Wings are showing cinnamon now and some spangle markings.
  17. Thankyou both.
  18. Hi If any of your birds with chicks/babies gets a really dirty face, do you pull them out and clean it? one of my hens has a really dirty face with silverbeet/grass and corn on it. I really want to clean it off as it must be annoying but I dont want her to neglect the chicks? Same thing with the cock, he has everything under the sun on his mask and beak. What should I do?
  19. Pearce replied to Pearce's topic in Budgie Pictures
YEs I agree. If you dont use flash and the babies are moving 100% of pictures will be blurry as anything. You can either put them in a small container or hold them in your hand. If on a flat surface you will not get any good pictures.
  20. This fellow reminds me of an eagle. He is standing perfectly straight and at attention. Its a really good picture.

Yes she is the mother. She is a pet bird with a big background. Excellent mother that cares for her chicks very well. Father eats like anything (Notice all the silverbeet and or corn on his mask) to keep the chicks going well. He is good to.
  22. That is amazing Kaz. The pretending to behave photo is so funny.
