  1. Welcome to the reason I no longer have any permanent indoor birds
  2. What you are seeing there is two different kids of behaviour and both are normal. The first one is the way they would talk to each other if they were flying around to communicate within the flock and as you notice they are flying around when doing this the second is more quiet, romantic chatter between two birds. Not sure you'll be able to do much about it but I've got my fingers crossed for you.
  3. When my mum forgets something she says she's having 'an older persons moment' I just tell people I have two sons and my brain is mush so you'll have to bear with me
  4. That's what I thought, just Kaz having a blonde moment then
  5. Gonna talk to hubby when I next hear from him (he's floating around th ocean on an air craft carrier at the moment) and see what he thinks, we are both ex SES members so the concept of getting on the roof and fiddling with tiles doesn't bther either ofus so between us we should be able to do it.
  6. I am actually thinking of putting a couple on the roof of our house as it gets really hot and much of the heat sits in the ceiling, but it's a rental so I was thinking if I got the type where you just remove a few tiles and insert it in the gap and secure it then I could just take them back out again when we leave and either use them at the new house or sell them.
  7. Do you know whether you will have to have them installed profesionally?
  8. Has anyone had one of those rooftop whirley birds added to their roof and can tell me how much difference they make? Also are they easy to install or do you have to have them professionally installed?
  9. I'm sure he'll be jumping on the next international flight your way JB
  10. The grey in that photo is a dark grey, he looks alot like my greys:
  11. If he was mauve I would expect his colouring to be a fair bit darker though and on my screen he doesn't look blue...
  12. He could be a grey, depends what the lacewing is masking If he is grey it is a dominant colour so pair him with a grey or a blue and you should get some grey chicks, if you put him with a green you should get some grey greens
  13. Can a green normal hen be split for lacewing given it's a combo of two sex linked mutations??
  14. My kids will eat their vegies cooked never had trouble with that it was salad I was struggling with. My oldest thinks I'm a food nazi. On a couple of occasions he has 'decided' he doesn't like things anymore. Once he decided that he wasn't going to eat carrots any more so the next night he got a bowl of carrots which had to be eaten before the rest of his dinner arrived, another time he spent a day in the kinder and saw all the 'big kids' not eating the crusts off their bread so he decided he wouldn't either so for lunch I cut the crusts off and served those first and the rest of his sandwich arrived once they were eaten!! That was when he was about 3 and he's 4 1/2 now and he growls at his little brother for not eating his crusts :laughter:
  15. Awww, that's cute. I have a galah that sleeps lying along the perch it's so strange to see when you are used to birds that perch normally
  16. I'm a strange one though I love most fruit but I HATE bananas and watermelon, both of which my kidlets adore.
  17. My oldest hates beetroot, I offered it to him once and he thought it looked great and crunched into it and then started dry reaching :laughter: Personally I don't blame him, I can't stand the stuff
  18. That's where I'm at too, I think they get away with alot at childcare which is probably why I was finding it so hard at home, there was a massive double standard to contend with :laughter: Now that the only standard they have to adhere to is mine they are actually starting to eat all their food.
  19. I know it probably seems like such a small thing to those that don't have kids but those that do have kids will know how difficult it can be to get them to eat not only thier vegies but particularly salad. Having spent every midweek day at childcare until very recently I was finding this particularly difficult so now that they are home fulltime I've been working on it. I didn't think I was getting anywhere until this morning. I got all the bits out to make the birds food up and started chopping things up. Next thing I know both my boys are there snacking away on raw beans, carrots and even raw brocolli! They have also discovered that they really like purple cabbage It's one small step for Max and Alex but one giant leap towards a happy mum :laughter:
  20. We don't have Parrotlets here, they are the smallest species of parrot
  21. Welcome, we would love to hear some more about your birds and see some pictures too (we like those best ). Feel free to post about your parrotlet in the off topic section
  22. Agreed, we all have deaths of babies here, it is an unfortunate occasional occurance as a breeder and some years are worse than others BUT those deaths are not the result of something avoidable as is the case here. Be aware that a hen may not just kill eggs she may kill babies too, there is every chance that you may go out to your aviary one day and find all the babies of your other hen dead on the floor of the aviary.
  23. By having nest boxes in an aviary with birds that are too young YOU are responsible for the deaths of every one of those babies. As a pet owner you are responsible for ensuring that your birds are kept in an aviary which is suited to their needs at each stage of their lives, there is a good chance your hen is not 'bossy' as you say but anxious as a result of being bred at an age when she was not emotionally ready.
  24. I'm with you SW, I'd be taking lots of pics but keeping it to myself and a few trusted friends until I had a few of them, a friend of mine was one of the first to breed lutino rainbow lorikeets many years ago (I think that was the mutation) and someone came and broke into his aviaries and stole them, even stole chicks and eggs out of boxes Now they are everywhere.
