  1. Looking a little perkier I think, she's now perched up on the edge of the food bowl and has actually attempted to climb out of the brooder a couple of times. She seems to have less discharge from her nose and her eyes aren't watery now but they are still half closed. So far, so good I think
  2. I reckon they'd be okay, I've been thinking about sneaking a few in myself Kaz as my large aviary down the back currently only has two lorikeets in it
  3. Once it has been wet and then set it's not dangerous, the main danger with cements is that when they dry they heat up and dehydrate the water which means that if you ingest cement dust or even have your sking in contact with wet cement for too long it will extract water from your body and dehydrate you. Once the cement has done it's setting it becomes basically inert and harmless
  4. Keep an eye on mum, she should be fine. Sorry to hear about the cock, what happened?
  5. Unless the floor is fully sealed with wire they could still be getting in, if the floor is bark chances are any tunnels would collapse behind them. Exactly what had happened to the budgie? Another common one is if the budgie decides to sleep on the wire then a rat or a bird of prey may grab them through the wire and do alot of damage
  6. If you were worried you could always put some sand over the top of the cement, easier to clean that way anyway
  7. Yep He left their heads out so they could breathe
  8. I actually bought the mesh to use on the bird aviaries but it's proved useful for all sorts of stuff. I have 70metres of it
  9. Aw that sweet of him The place I worked at until recently had fish, turtles and lizards, oh and an eel but that was the Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment so maybe not so unusual
  10. I was reading a news report just then (sadly about a possible missing 'schoolie' who opefully isn't really missing), when at the end of the report that did a bit of a 'following on from that topic' type diversion as follows: It proved to be a busy day for lifeguards manning the Gold Coast's beaches, with another two people being rescued from the water near Surfers Paradise early on Friday. Lifeguards were also involved in a scuffle with a naked man who police claim was harassing beachgoers at Mermaid Beach about 11.30am on Thursday. Police allege the 25-year-old turned on police officers and a lifeguard when he was pulled from the surf, biting and scratching the three when he was arrested. He has been charged with obstructing police and wilful exposure Now maybe it's just late and my brains gone to mush but personally a 25 year old naked man harrasing me on the beach would NOT turn me on How unfortunate for the person that wrote that report
  11. Yeah very strange, you would just find this little chook head sticking up out of the ground
  12. Yeah we had to fence off the sideway as we had a lab X boxer who used to 'steal' the chooks if he managed to get in. He never hurt any but he did used to carry them and pop them in his kennel and also bury them up to their necks If we went out and realised the chooks were missing we knew we would have to go and dig a couple up and dust them off
  13. I pick up my new fish tomorrow night I'm getting 10 albino bristlenose and 20 Endler's livebearers(a close relative of guppies and VERY pretty ) Here's another picture of the larger log with it's new moss. It is held down with stainless steel mesh and after a few weeks you shouldn't be able to see the mesh at all anymore as the moss will grow all over it aswell as attaching itself to the log.
  14. If you have space for aviaries surely you could squish a few chooks in somewhere. When we had chooks a few years ago we used to keep them down the sideway of the house, it was a couple of metres wide and almost the full length of the house block so it was plenty of space for five chooks and we got HEAPS of eggs from them. The only reason I don't have some now is becaue my hubby has banned me until we move to the new house
  15. I'm hoping to give myself no choice next year. When we finally get our own place the first thing that will be going in is a humungous kitchen garden, a mini orchard plus the chooks for meat and eggs which I hope will eventually supply 90% of our fresh food, the I won't even be buying the frozen ones
  16. I was cutting up the birds food for tomorrow morning to save myself time when the kids are asleep and the thought occured to me that rarely do I eat as well as my birds do
  17. Here's the little girly, photos a bit dark as I didn't want to upset her by turning the bright light on suddenly. She's doing a good job of messing up the brooder I just finished cleaning
  18. Would they have internet do you think? You could always write down this site for them and just pop your head over and say, hey noticed you got some budgies, I got some recently too and I've been getting lots of tips from here" Might be less confrontational that way.
  19. Luckily for her my budgie babies have all graduated into budgie kinder and don't need the brooder now so she has taken up residence in it for the warmth on the chilly nights
  20. Awww carolyn he's such a cutey. What you really need in your life at the moment is some good news........
  21. I'm sure it won't be long till you work out which ones are the males, once you work it out you could put little coloured split rings on the males so you know. Just as a side thought despite the neighbours poor care the elderley lady is probably quite sad at the loss of her pets. Might be nice to take a few photos and drop them over so she can see her babies have been well cared for.
  22. Who knows, atleast I caught it early on so fingers crossed the change of medicine does the trick
  23. That's what I suspect but her sister is fine and so are the other birds, just bad luck I think
  24. There is a point at which you have to say "is the treatment going to be worse than leaving her the way she is". Recently after our elderly beloved cat had a series of strokes the vet informed us that the meat which was her main food was the cause of her stroke because it contained a bad preservative. When we got her as a kitten 20 years ago this was not known and it's only been recently discovered as a cause of stroke in animals fed it long term. The vet advised us that the best thing would be to take her off the meat and feed her something else. However when we tried to take her off the meat she refused to eat anything else and began to loose weight. In the end we had to make a choice between her starving to death or risking continuing to feed her the meat of her choice. We went with the meat, starvation was a guanrateed death, the meat was just a risk...
  25. I would leave it with the parents and continue to feed while the parents keep it warm, you may find once there are a few peeping, hungry babies in the nest the parents might get the gist and take over, that would be ideal. Leave a soft light on until you have done that late feed and make sure mum heads back in the box afterwards
