Possums...
Norn That's "an old wives tale" as Grandma used to say. As one who has studied Australian animals I can assure you that they are not predators. Why if they were they would eat every baby bird in the nest in their territory and you would see a decline to extinction of every bird type in the country that just does not happen. Whenever they come into houses or peoples yards it is in search for food. Scraps in chook pens, chicken pellets, budgie seed and whatever people are feeding them. Definately not carnivores. Not wanting to disagree with everyone here today but you SHOULD NOT feed any wild birds and animals in your backyard. It is frowned upon by wildlife experts, can cause disease and can upset the balance within territories and cause fights, sometimes to the death. Off my soap box. Derek

My New And First Aviary For 20 Years
You aren't butting in at all. All information is relevant for others in the same situation. You might also want to check with the local council as to how many birds you can keep. Most of them have that info online and believe it or not, most are different.

My New And First Aviary For 20 Years
Maesie Just make sure that the agent knows what you are going to do. With mine I had to agree to replace the turf where the aviary is sitting whenever I leave. Some agents/owners may not accept having an aviary in the yard. You don't want to move in put up the aviary and then have a bun fight with the agents and risk eviction. Derek

Why Are You Breeding
I saw a similar topic to this on another site and thought it would be an interesting one for here. Why are you breeding budgerigars? My answer is: I have only just started but my purpose in breeding to to establish a stud of quality showbirds that are capable of and may win local and national show titles. Not only that it brings me great joy to just sit and watch the birds and also to see the outcomes of breeding pairings.

Seed Mixes
Do you know what is in it though ???

Seed Mixes
Just curious as to what people are using for their seed mixes for budgies. Do you buy premixed seed or purchase different types and mix yourself and if so what types of different seed do you mix together. Derek

Musing On Aviary Ideas
That narrows it down more MB. Have a look at this site http://aussiecagesandaviaries.com/Modular%20aviaries.htm They are located at Tamworth in New South Wales but will build anything you want and send their products all over Australia. Here is another one located in Queensland http://www.custombuiltaviaries.com.au/3.html It isn't the best website in the world but keep going through all the links and you will see that they make a very good product.

Musing On Aviary Ideas
If you want to do a custom aviary then go the way Daz did his in this thread. http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....showtopic=12409 The concept is there and if you want it larger then just do it larger. I visited a breeder last weekend who had a similar setup to Daz inside a prefab garage. This one wasn't insulated as Daz has. Where the roller door was he had a frame with bird mesh and had his flights similar to what Daz has done were partitioned off inside. The roller door was still in place and in real bad weather he could pull it down. Half of the garage was flights and the other half was the breeding room. If I was you I would go and visit either a Garage manufacturer or possibly a steel frame home manufacturer and tell them what you are looking for and see what ideas they come up with.. Also if you do a search on Google for "Large Aviaries" you will also find some ideas. Cheers. Derek
