How To Handle A Randy Cock
He is only like this during breeding season. (He is not aggresive and has never attacked another bird, just keen.) At other times he is a great bird and happy to feed and look after his chosen woman. My only option here was to put him in a smallish cage in my breeding room which is tiny and adjoins my avairy. I saw this as cruel as he could see the ladies, here the ladies but not have the ladies... At MB's or Av's he can breed a few clutches and the retire to the avairy... she also has more room... so I see this as a solution to my problem, but also a better one for him and his needs.

How To Handle A Randy Cock
Well, after much thought... I have decided to sell him to MB. He was a bird who came to me as he flew into a friends yard and she didn't want him. He has given me 5 lovely babies (3 of which I still own) and has been a great pet. The solution in his best interest was to separate him from my aviary birds and decrease his daylight hours. As I am not home much, this would mean asking Dad to do it. There have also been two eggs laid on the floor of the aviary in the last few days The other solution would be to allow him to have another clutch, again... something I can't manage at the moment. So, I have been in touch with MB and she has agreed to take him off my hands. After his quarantine she's happen to let him have some more babies ( :ohmygod: He'll be excited!!!!) I'm sure he'll be very happy at MB place. I feel a little bad, but know this is the best decision for him and me. If I had an aviary in my current yard, I'd be breeding him, but I feel I can not do what is best for him now and here... Thanks MB and I'll see you in the morning!

Hello :)
Hi and welcome to the forum. She is very pretty indeed. :purr: I noticed you said she loves lettuce.... Please don't feed her lettuce. It has no nutritional value and can actually give them the runs and make them sick. Bok choy, Pak choy, corn, silverbeet etc... would be much better for her . Once again, welcome and I hope you feel at home here and learn all you are hoping to!

Pearce's Budgerigar Blog
I agree, they are seeds. You may find the wood shaving will stay this time round. I usually find before and during egg laying, all the shavings are emptied... but once the chicks arrive the hen is to busy to worry about getting rid of them. Which is great for us as it makes cleaning much easier!

How To Handle A Randy Cock
That is what I think happened with Crackle. I might just keep a close eye on him! I'm all for having fun (yeah Elly, no nest boxes), but don't want to loose any hens because of his urges... or have them on a merry-go-round of antibiotics!

New Budgie

Breeding Help
Hi and welcome... I'd be asking myself if I want to breed, and am I ready. If I answered yes to both of these questions, I would probably move her, her eggs and her partner to a breeding cage. I know there is a risk she will leave her eggs, but I believe if she if left to have them on the ground in an aviary with other budgies... you are asking for trouble. At least this way you'd give yourself the best chance of it working... If she does leave them... so be it. As you said you weren't planning on breeding this year... I am not a fan of colony breeding and therefor only cabinet breed. Good luck with what ever you decide to do.
