Just came back froma chat with a friend who said that I missed out on buying some Top birds at that auction. His thoughts where that $500-$1000 birds where fetching in between $200-$500. I'm not at the stage where I cant throw that sort of money around and even if I did have the money I probably would not know what to do with that type of bird.
  2. I am not into breeding the more "exotic" types yet but I would say a Lacewing. My main aim is to have a good stud of Normals, Opalines, Spangles and Dominant Pieds once I think I have achieved this I will branch out.
  3. Coming from an IT background that last one has done the rounds and still always draws a smile to my face.

I hope he gives you some top youngster's (Maybe I can buy one of them off you later this year)
  5. Great article. It is always good to have more experienced breeders help us with articles ike this.
  6. I give my birds carrots, brocolli, apple (remove the seed). i also feed them native ecalyptus branches (with leaves) and bottle brush. I do not mash anything just cut it up in smallish pieces (in the case of an apple in 1/8ths) and let the birds manipulate them as I believe it exercises their feet/beak more. Others on this forum feed different items. Another thing I give my birds is discarded seed is thrown in the corner of my Garden and dirt thrown over when this grows I just simply clean it and throw it in the avairy. They love this.
  7. The normal green would have to be split for blue, that is one of his parents is a blue bird. Thats how you get blue babies from a Green and Blue pair.

Thanks to all on your comments. I posted the chick as I thought It had good potential just wanted to get a feel on what more experienced breeder's thought.

Hi All finally got around to taking some snaps of my birds. http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll237/i...pg?t=1206768796 Late 07 bred Dec 07 just finishing her first moult http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll237/i...pg?t=1206769044 I have high hopes on this 4 week old. http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll237/i...pg?t=1206769155 http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll237/i...pg?t=1206769282 One of my breeding cocks
  12. I believe double factor spangle unless someone corrects me. I am trying to breed some myself with my spangle pair i just put in the breeding cage.
  13. Thanks Daz. This gives me an idea on how to setup my breeding room when I get my new avairy next month. It measures 2.7 wide 1.9 high and 1.8 deep i will split it in two, the flight will be 1.7 wide and the breeding room 2.0.
  14. You may have to cut your losses and retire the two cock birds. You may want to place them in your nappy cage and use them as "mentors" to your fledglings.
  15. Nice illistration on the link Karen. I have not come across this in my birds and am hoping not too.
  16. I have a hen that laid her first egg on the floor (damaged) but continued on and laid another 6 in the nest box of which 4 where fertile and are strong healthy "teenagers". As Kaz says, just bad timing.
  17. I have a cock that I tried with 3 hens last year and he would not have a bar of them, So I put him back in the flight and gave him an hen that chsed him around the cage for a day and after a week a a bond formed. I have not witnessed any mating yet but she is in and out the nest box. So The Pie is correct.
  18. I have my breeding pairs in wire cages with the nest box attached to the outside. I find this easier to clean. They are positioned currently in my store room until I build my new avairy which will incorporate an indoor breeding room and one flight. I currently have 6 breeding cages and my another six when I start/complete the avairy some time in the next couple of months.
  19. Hi and welcome. They will need their cage cleaned at least once a week. A good budgie mix (Trill in Australis -not sure if it's available in Canada) and some calcium supplement(cuttlefish bone) along with shell grit (to aid in digestion). I will let others answer the rest of the questions as I do not keep Pet budgies. Make sure they have access to plenty of fresh water and change this daily. Also my birds love carrot, apple (no seed) brocolli, spinach and native bottlebrush and eucalyptus leaves and branch's to chew on.(Australian native tree)

Not everyone here is a show breeder like us George nor do they have the available space for breeding cabinets. When I first owned budgies over 20 years ago I started with the colony system. I was about 12 and could not build breeding cabinets nor did my father have the time to do this for me. Space was at a premium those days and I was lucky enough that Dad built an avairy measuring 2 mtrs long by 1.5 wide. I had many a success with colony breeding and some disapointments but no more as I do with controlled breeding today. Do not be quick to judge others as they enjoy their birds.
  21. Assuming that the birds are not split for blue, you will have some greens & some greygreens. Not sure of the percentage's though.

It's amazing the differnce in size chicks are and be only 4-6 days apart. As long as the crop is full then you will have no problems but as Kaz says a picture would be great.
  23. Liv is correct, they are much smaller than even the pet variety.
  24. 88% It goes to show, we need to keep on re-reading what we all have read months ago.
