  1. Congratulations, your birds are about to raise a family. All behaviour is normal so no need to worry.
  2. Ikon replied to Chrysocome's topic in Budgie Behaviour
Hens can come in and out of season all year round.
  3. I add sawdust as this absorbs the poop and makes for easy cleaning. It also gives the Hens something to do before laying by removing or as most of my hens do they push it to the corners.
  4. I dont remove the Hen howver when the chicks have left the nest box I remove it and let both parents rear the chicks.
  5. Yes the hen can store sperm for about 3 weeks.
  6. I would add John Scoble to that list.
  7. Thanks for the Pics. Super birds (As you would expect at a show like this)
  8. Dont trust what the pet shops tell you. The best way is to buy from breeders. If they ring their birds you can get a full history(date hacthed, if it is hidding any recesive traits etc) of the bird you are buying, in the majority of cases you can even view parents and sibbllings.
  9. I may need to rephrase. They spend 1 week in the nappy cage with other youngsters. I place them in the nappy cage always on a Saturday so I can monitor them for two days at regular intervals, any sign of them not eating I place them back with their parents (No nest box as I remove this once they hae fledged)I them before and after work. Prior to that they are out of the nest box and with their parents for 1-2 weeks.

Your local hardware store should sell it. The advice above is great.

  12. My mate and our club treasurer got 5 best normal blue.
  13. I personally do not sell until at least 6-7 weeks and definately eating on its own for at least 1 week.
  14. I have 8 pairs at the moment and out of 15 chicks I have lost 3 (I put this down to cold weather) I am cabinet breeding.
  15. Three weeks is what I do although if the Hen starts attacking the cock it's usually about three minutes.
  16. Can you post a picture and some one on the forum can tell you exactly what is wrong.
  17. Thats the way to do it. Attend meetings talk to the breeders. Take note of what birds are winning and mentally compare them to what you have and see where you need improvement.
  18. Each to their own. I actually like these show budgies better than the pet ones. The way to avoid them is not buy the show types.

I am puttig up a new avairy I was working on all weekend. I used pavers which cost me $200 for 6.5 square meters. I leveled out the area and laid some mouse and snake mesh down before pouring the sand and laying the pavers. I am using the sand to fill in the cracks and if I still have mouse problems then I will concreted the cracks. This weeked the avairy goes up. Cant wait.
  20. A question that I have asked myself. I breed because when I see the busgies being benched for judging I think to myself Why cant I breed birds like this and the answer is I can, Just may take a bit of time. So thats the excitment for me.
