  1. Personally I would leave the babies with the males as when they leave the nestbox it is the fathers job to feed & teach them how to fend for themselves.

I agree with the others change your cage to one like in the pictue
  3. Ikon replied to Pika's topic in Food And Nutrition
I too have never tried to feed my birds oranges but apples(i don't give them he seed) and carrots they really like. I also empty my seed in one section of the garden & feed them the whole plant when it grows. They really love this.
  4. I agree with all, plenty of food, fresh water also provide calcium like cuttlefishbone found in all pet stores & a place to lay their eggs(nest box). Then you sit back & let mother nature take it's course.
  5. I too would like to see how these birds progress
  6. Ikon replied to Bec Sta's topic in Breeders Discussion
    Good luck with your breeding

Looking good. Your birds remind me of mine when fresh bottle brush is introduced.
  8. Sounds like normal adolescent behaviour to me, Grumpy will get over it when he/she matures.
  9. Agree with all. Let her chose her mate in the avairy and them put them in a breeding cage, you will have greater success this way
  10. Try looking up on the South Australian budgerigar club (google it) & contact them for your nearest club. Also make sure you take your parents with you when buying birds from anyone.

    Nice birds
  12. I agree with DAZ The Master breeder is a great on-line book, In fact I think I might have picked it up from Daz on another post a long way back. Another is nans no tech genetics which explain the way genetics work in a simple easy to understand way. Here is the link http://www.geocities.com/thoronton/index.html I personally would start with a young pair & let them mature, That way you will get to know your birds.Another point of advice, buy from a breeder like one on this forum, you will get healthier, happier birds. I'm sure someone here lives close to you
  13. Hello & welcome, I find www.masterbreeder.com very useful reading.
  14. Hi & welcome, I agree with Kaz & Elly
  15. What colour are you after ? Remember the white budgie or Albino as you have is a blue base bird, so putting her to blue will give you blue birds that will carry the Albino gene, Putting her to green will give you Green birds.
  16. I agree with Kaz, they are visually distracted by the other birds. I currently have a makeshift breeding room which takes up about half our storage room (3mtrs x2mtrs) with 8 breeding wire cages. I will build my new aviary which will incorporate a breeding room of 2.8mtrs x 1.5mtrs & a flight of 1.2 wide & 1.8 long. I have ditched my plans for two flights, This is due in April/May.

I agree natural is best, Australian native tree's like Bottle brush & Eucalyptus along with fresh fruit is great to supplemrnt their diets. Just think what would they eat in the wild, thats my theory.
  18. I do the same as Kaz. Patience is the key when breeding. If nothing happens for 2 weeks than I remove the male bird & intoduce another in a few days.
  19. Try any of the following for Ant control. Wash countertops, cabinets, and floor with equal parts vinegar and water to deter ant infestations. Sprinkle powdered cinnamon on ant trails. Several types of ants will not cross a barrier of cinnamon powder, powdered charcoal, bone meal, talcum powder, or chalk. Fire ants--Killing the egg -laying queen is the only way to destroy the colony. Choose a day when the ground is dry. Gently sprinkle a teaspoon of instant grits on each fireant hill. The worker ants carry the grits to the queen who eats them. When she drinks water, the grits expand in her stomach and kill her. The remainder of the hill dies within a day. If all else fails you could make a small mout around your aviary, the ants would not cross the water.
  20. Yeah I thought so as well, Easy to undersatnd though.
  21. Hi, before I decided to get back into breeding budgies after a layoff of more than 15 years(I decided chasing girls was a better hobby, then the family came along) I decided I will breed show budgies & immediately started filling my head with every bit of help I could get. One thing that I found difficult to grasp was genetics until I stumbled accross the following web page http://www.geocities.com/thoronton/notech1.html This has helped me & suddenly I understood what everyone was talking about, In fact it is one of my favourites & I refer back to it often. Hope this helps others
  22. Hi Laraine welcome, libby is correct. I would add that I have read somewhere that pet budies (Australian) live longer but I may be wrong perhaps someone here can confirm or deny this.
  23. I started breeding show budgies last year, although I did not show any I will start showing at club level this year & speak to the judges in regards to where I need improvements, Also my fellow club members are also giving me advice. I have attended almost every club meeting since joining, soaking in all the advice & having a really good look at what birds win & comparing them to what I currently have. I also listen to guest speakers taking in valuable information. So finger's crossed I may pick some club awards up later this year.

I am undecided, I am designing a new aviary & was thinking of 2 flights but unsure as to separating hens & cocks or having a separate flight for the juvenilles & the other for the adults. Currently they are all in the one aviary
