  1. :hi: Ernie and your bird is a ovely looking bird, what hen have you decided to put him with, he could be violet it is hard to tell from photos because my violets come up looking cobalt on here. BUT more than likely he is cobalt or sky violet, does he look a purple colour in real life or a cobalt colour. As for a breeding book have alook on ebay as you can pick books up there at a fair price.
  2. Mine love it Kaz but I am out now, the fingers draws sitting on top was the last of. The little rats . tryin g to get hold of some more Hard around here.
  3. True grit is a red colour and yes the pvm is pink so I had a fine mess to clean up.
  4. A funny thing happened today, but sorry no photos. I went out to the breedroom to take away the soft food off all cages, well when I took the soft food from a wire nappy cage I have to lift the perch a little bit to get the food container out, as the perch is above the door. Well I must of left the door up a bit because a couple of hours later I went out to check and top up feed containers and while I was in the first part of breeding something caught my eye in the far one and I looked up and could see 2 babies sitting on top of the cages and my first thought was they escaped out of the baby aviary. BUT on invastagating they got out of the wire nappy cage. I caught those 2 and put them back in and there was only one other one in there, what a good girl she was staying put, but then and I thought hang on there should be more , looking around I thought what!!! where are they, couldn't find them anyway. Well I looked over into the large nappy cage which is now empty waiting for me to clean it with virkons for the next babies to go into so there is only half of the wire fronts on it with still a perch attached. Well there they were 2 perect little young ladies sitting up on the perch in their old cage, I think they must of remembered be there so they returned. But what a mess they made because I had finger drawers of true grit and PVM powder sitting on the shelf where the 1st 2 were sitting and the the true grit and pvm powder was everywhere, they made a good mess for me to clean up I had spare perches sitting on another shelve and they were on the floor. So yep given the opportunity my do escape
  5. Looks like your breedings going great Kaz, lots of little chicks
  6. I prefer to use Sulpha AVS before any harsh drugs. If needed do you have any on hand. But saying that I have a young hen about the same age and she went backwards when I put her in the aviary which most babies do but this hen just seemed to struggle so now she is back in the nappy cage happy as larry. Her bum was wet in the aviary but now fine without any meds.
  7. Thanks Kaz double the dose
  8. Yes another egg fertile today, farmed it out GB the cobalt spangle and dilute have 2 babies now for more to hatch one due tomorrow, the 1st 2 died.
  9. From my experience the culprit should have blood on them, but I am guessing there is no bird there with blood on them so I guess he or she is real little villen
  10. They are cute GB but look where you are now, I still breed some of them
  11. I am really excited. last year at our meeting I got a bird from Ian for nothing as she was iffy in the breeding cage, she is a very nice grey hen. 07 Well i put her down earlier and she had clear eggs then destroyed the nest so I put her back into the flight for a couple of months. I put her down a couple of weeks ago with a grey green cin cock with nice feather. Well she has laid 4 eggs and so far 2 are fertile but I have transfered them to another nest from advice from Ian. I rang him today to see how she was iffy. and he said she doesn't always fill the eggs and she is not a reliable mother. But he was rreally pleased that I have 2 fertile eggs because I said she was a nice hen and he said no she is a top hen. She placed 11th at the uncapped shield. The best thing is she is my breeding 100% Watson. Related to all my birds. So now I am dying to put my violet over her because if she takes to him I think they will click. bUT she still has a couple more eggs to lay with this cock yet and then I will give her a little break.
  12. My guess is the same as Daryl
  13. It does sound like french moult. Sorry Anne I wouldn't take it because it is bad enough when you breed your own runners, which luckily I don't have any here but they are a waist of space , I know that sound cruelled but so true. You are just asking for problems when you start taking in birds with problems.

I give my birds mung bean sprout. Here is an easy soft food recipe Daz gave me 2 tablespoons of Budgie starter or 2 parts 1 tablespoon of Budgie Crumble or 1 part To 1/2cup of soaked hulled oats and 1/4 cup of soaked wheat. 1/2 a grated carrot. This will feed 14 cages.
  15. Lovely babies Gb, really really really NICE, as for leaving cage open lol I do it all the time
  16. I know what you are saying Kaz but our club doesn't work together, amybe now we have new President etc things may change. Like we use to all get seed from one place and now that the guy that went up and got it can't anymore, everyone to themself, I have been waiting for for all of us to say how many bags we want and then they ship down a pellet but it seems they only look after themselves. :fear BUT when I get my car up and running I will have to go buy some myself. Will ask about millet spray :fear
  17. Is that what you do Kaz but the problem with that, well mainly around if I ask for anything that they don't stock they say i have to buy the whole pellet or for example if the millet came in 50kg they would say I have to buy the whole lot. Like a while ago I wanted tricacali or how ever you spell it and I had to 200kg :fear and I said I only want a bag, and another time I want a bag of horse feed and they don't stock it they said that I needed to buy the pellet. :fear again I said I only want 1 bag.
  18. I was wondering about the yellow face affect, thanks GB.
  19. It's really to early to tell give them a few more days
  20. Oops Nubbly you are an expert on greywings and clearwings so I guess I was wrong, okay clearwing but it is heavily marked right.
  21. If it's a clearwing it is a badly marked one because clearwing means just that, this bird is showing heavily marked grey markings, now I am no expert as I do not breed either of the 2 types but I did buy a clear wing at auction last year and he wasn't as heavily marked as bird but he was bad variety by far. Just my in put
  22. Yes I thought grey wing too
  23. They certainly like their soft food
  24. Where do you buy yours GB, I just found some in the budgie News Victoria, Discount Animal Suppilies But it is in Lysterfield and by the book I don't think they post. anyway it is 15kg $110.00. how will I get there
  25. splat replied to PJI's topic in Cage Discussion
Nice cages PJI, ou did an excellent job. Many breeders I know do not use trays ever as they like to have a build up of seed on the floor for babies, I personally like a clean cage and not encourage those stupid moths that hang around when seed is always there. BUT as I was saying many breeders here that have been breeding for years and years pair their birds up and then do not touch the cage until the pair have raised their young except they take away the excess droppings. They have said the more you intrude the birds don't breed to their best ability, BUT every one to there own I think, as I vaccum too BUT when the babies come out of the nest I do leave it alone until they go into the nappy cage, they seem to thrive better when there is plenty of seed on the floor
