New House, New Aviary
Moved into our new place a few weeks ago and decided not to bring my aviaries with us but to build some new ones- better suited to the space and in a matching set-up. As before I had 3 different shapes and it woulg have looked a bit motley here. Worked out where it was going and how big approx (depending on what lengths the steel came in to make it easier) there would be 4 sections for the birds. Paving was done a month ago, its had time to settle and the concrete/dust to harden, wash. Steel was delivered last week Other half got busy welding up the frames- it'll be just under 10mt x 1.8mt making each section 2.2 x 1.8mt. Half mesh and half tin sides and dividers, full tin roof. Security door per 2 sections in a triangle shape (3 doors) Wire didnt come up on the truck like it was supposed to so hopefully it arrives this week and I can start wiring up the frames ready to be put together next week (frames sitting on the paved area teasing me) Birds are still at the old house luckily we had a friend buy the house and is letting them stay until we are ready, I just go and feed them and check them every day. This is half of the back section- there are 2 parts this long More pics as its built and birds added.

What Is A Df Spangle?
Double Factor means that instead of getting 1 spangle or pied 'gene' from one parent it gets one from each, so spangle x spangle mating will give you normal looking spangles (single factor or 1 'dose') but it will also give you double factor (2 doses) of spangle which is what makes the markings alter (or give none) Dominant Pied is the same Pied x Pied 1 'dose' from one parent will give you normal looking pieds (single factor)2 'doses' (1 from each parent) give the minimal markings of a 'double factor' pied.

Aviary Base
I am in the process of building a new aviary. For the base we had a huge amount of slabs from where we will be putting the new pergola and brick paving. Was going to lay a concrete slab for it when we got one for the garage but it was a tad cheaper like this!! As the aviary base is going to be 10m by 2m we layed a base of yellow brickies sand before laying the slabs, after the slabs were down we proceeded to use bags of cement and fine gravel/dust mix (like cracker dust) swept into gaps between slabs and gaps between fence (corrugated) and edge of slabs. Hosed in and left for a few weeks I'd like to see any mouse or ant get through it. I'll get some pics of a couple of stages and post shortly- frames are made waiting on delivery of wire which didnt arrive this week

Your just coming into spring/summer now arent you? Does the area have enough light/warmth to stimulate them into breeding? Are they in an indoor or outdoor aviary?

- Hatching?
Did the 9th hatch? Sounds like all is well so far, good to see pics later on. I had one hatch yesterday and one today from one clutch- maiden hen, she's doing really well so far never seen bubs so full.- Are Budgies Normally Less Active In Winter
Mine do go quieter during cold weather, they are still noisy but its a tolerable noise- not like the summer morning wakeups I usually get!! Our weather seems to go from hot to real cold in a matter of days and it seems to take the birds a bit of time adjusting to the cold.- Some Pics From The Station
yep weiros are cockatiels. The noise of the birds around the place was amazing, its been quite some time since they have had a decent rain up there so the birds were loving all the fresh green seed everywhere, up and down the rivers they lined the gumtrees checking out hollows. Not sure why the pics came out so fuzzy though- they didnt like the resizing on photobucket I guess!!- Some Pics From The Station
Just had a few weeks up on the station and thought some of you might like to see wild weiros budgies and cockies. Well the budgies didnt sit still long enough for pics and the sun was always in the wrong spot for colour pics of weiros but I tried!! Cockies werent hard as they filled the trees along the rivers and we had a flock of a few hundred every morning and arvo some to feed on the new seeding grasses. Zebra finches in every tree everywhere we went!! Still a bit of water around although it has gone down quick, few creek crossings to negotiate Weiros flying At sunrise- weiros in tree Rose Bourkes- didnt get many good pics of these Corellas- a very small part of the flock- not very clear Pink and greys- they are everywhere but thought someone may like to see a picture Got lots of pics of these guys Wild horses and donkeys running around too- these 2 were a young stallion and a mare getting to know each other! Plenty more pics but this will do for now as they take too long to upload!! Not sure what happened but the pics came out very grainy on the forum. sorry- Zebra's Baby - Benjamin
He is a little spunk, good to hear all is well with you both- thought you'd be around shortly with the news!!- New News

(Laughing out loud)- Heinz 57 of the bird world- Vote For Your Favorite "feathered Friend"
Cant get links to work as a copy/paste so sorry if you dont get a vote. Had the pics come up after I voted though- so could see them after I had voted- Sibling Quality
My brain isnt working with my fingers today so excuse how this is typed!! Does anyone notice a difference in quality of siblings? I find the oldest and youngest in a nest are nice birds but the middle one is usually a cull, of course this isnt all the time but looking at a few clutches Ive had and ones I have now there is starting to be a trend. I have 3 now feathering up oldest has good directional feather coming through with a nice mask, middle has feathers on the brow running straight back and a narrow head (compared to the others) and youngest is starting to look as good if not better than the oldest, strong brow and feathering. Something I'll be keeping my eye on in the next few months- Finally Breeding
Well its finally cooled down here so I have some pairs down (until its too cold!!) we'll be moving in the next few months so it may be put on hold for a bit while we move as well. SoI'll get some out while I can. First I have a Lute hen and green opaline cock- so far 3 green opaline chicks Next a grey opaline cock I got a while back and havent used yet, and a skyblue normal hen I bred just over a year ago so it'll be my first generation of my breeding (kinda) (not a good picture) Also have a green dom pied cock paired with a greygreen opaline spangle hen- not a pairing I'd really want but he is very forward in what he wants and its her first clutch and she is a bit of a grumpy hen. He has thrown some nice birds though. She is on 5 eggs I think Hopefully get this hen down this week I'll try for some better pics when the chicks are around- My Aviary....start To Finish
It just seems right that there are bird prints in a bird room, whenever one of us lays concrete we have an urge to write in it too!!!!
