She still hates my hand, but has started tweeting and chattering with Baz today. They have been talking none stop this morning, so I hope that is a good sign. Pooeys are still a bit on the yukky side though. Cindy

:glare: okay Nerwen, come and get him, but be warned - he is a cheeky fellow, always trying to escape and when he does he likes nestling under your neck. Two more just like him in colour Cindy

The roll was 3/4 full, Lovey. She is still not her usual self. Sleeps a lot. Very snappy if I put my hand in the cage, (I think she blames me ) Bazza is still feeding and preening her, but her poos are still a bit green and slighlty runny sometmes. I have put some avi-vite water suluble vitamin, mineral and amino acid supplement in her water, but just wonder if I should give her something else. The shock will probably affect for a while longer. It is upsetting seeing her so changed Cindy

I accidently left a roll of Paper towel standing upwards on the table in my bird room while Tweety and her boyfriend were free flying. Which was silly, as I know Tweety loves sitting on top and chewing at the paper, annd I went outside to get something and got waylaid doing something else and when I came back, I went to put the birds back in their cage, but could not find tweety, she likes playing hide and seek. As I was lifting everything up calling her, I noticed the paper towel laying on the table and went to pick it up to put outside, and poor Tweety was under it, on her back, flat as a tack:fear . Panic, I grabbed her rubbed her chest, still breathing and clicking her tongue, gave her a few drops of warm water and honey. Well all vets were closed 1.30pm sat. Took her to our local pet shop (she breeds and trains birds) and said Tweety was in shock and maybe had a slight heart attack. Placed her in a cage in a seperate room with no through traffic, covered her and put a 40watt lamp over her, for 48 hours (alternating between 40 watt and 20 watt if she got too hot) Well she is now back with her boyfirend all lovey dovey, But she wont step-up or attemtp to leave her cage anymore . Probably still stressed out, but Bazza is busy feeding her and kissing her better So please be careful where you leave rolls of paper towel or anything that can fall on your bird I was lucky Tweety survived, it could have been much worse due to a few minutes of carelessness Cindy

Yes it is a shelf, narrower than what I wated, but still a shelf Come annd have a look Aaaron Cindy :(Laughing out loud): I think Atticus would prefer your bedroom where he/she can do as he/she likes and get spoilt in the process. Oh, Atticus has a lutino sibling and and another albino Cindy

No safety door yet. Did not want to pressure him to do more work:angel1: . My 'safety door' is a lace curtain that I just pull down, when I want to leave the aviary. They dont worry when I enter, but I can still use the curtain if I need to. But a safety door is on my list of things for him to do. Cindy :(Laughing out loud): I can just see a wedding with you and an aviary Those swingy things are actually rails off an old baby cot, and Fred just off centred the 2nd row. One is hung by fine wire and the other is hung by stainless steel chain. The birds love them. Cindy

Thanks, I could not find anything about flowering sweet peas. I've planted some outside the aviary and so far they are not interested. Still too busy finding all the nooks and crannies in their new home. Cindy
  11. :fear What have you been feeding Atticus, Freeman? Did you put him/her on Fred's diet? I really love the pics Cindy

Thanks. Yes I know they will prune them well, so I don't expect they will grow very high, but if keeps them amused, and they have almost killed everything else I put in there anyway. Cant wait to put the birds back in there, I just have to put some soil and lucerne on the floor for the quails then all birdies go the their Hilton-on-Penrith. :ausb: Cindy

Thanks. I don't mind them pruning, they have done it to most of my native plants. I just put them back outside until they start growing again. The plants i mean, not the birds :ausb: Cindy

Is it safe to grow sweet peas up against the mesh walls of an aviary. Huuby suggested doing this to give them protection and something to play with. Cindy

My hubby has just completed my new aviary which is 2mtr x 2mtr square. He has 1/2 mesh roof and 1/2 colourbond, but has sheets of timber to lay down over the mesh for wet weather or hot sun protection. Not a bad effort on his part seeing it is only 2 months since he had all those strokes. While this was being done, I have all my budgies and quails in various cages all around the house, including laundry and flat. It keeps me busy running from cage to cage to make sure I have remembered to feed them all and clean out the cages:( . Now can anyone tell me if it is safe to grow sweetpeas against the mesh walls? Cindy

I have just read an article in the Budgerigar Handbook by Ernest H Hart , (a renown keeper and breeder of budgies),which reads as follows: PROTEIN: Eggs, Meat, Soybeans, dairy products FAT: Butter, Milk, oils, cream, oil seeds CARBOHYDRATES: Canary & millet seeds, cereals, vegetable and honey VITAMIN A: Greens, Peas, eggs, milk, beans, asparagus THIAMINE: Vegetables, legumes, eggs, muscle meat, milk, yeast, whole grains RIBOFLAVIN: Milk, egg-yolk, wheatgerm, yeast, beef, chicken, green leaves cottonseed meal, liver NIACIN: Milk, liver, yeast, lean meat VITAMIN D: Fortified milk, eggs, fish liver oils ASCORBIC ACID: Raw Cabbage, tomatoes, citrus fruits IRON, CALCIUM, PHOSPHORUS: Milk, eggs, soybeans, oatmeal, bone marrow, vegetable, liver, green-ground bonemeal I understood it was unsafe to give budgies dairy products. but I was suprised when I read, beef and liver. Can someone shed some light on this please Cindy

I almost fell over when his Dad said he paid $1000. I jokingly asked if he bought the whole aviary and was the bird gold-plated:D . I must find out where he lives (the son, not the Dad) and where he shows his birds and let you know. I took their seed away for a couple of hours last night and early today. and the babies have settled down and look healthy. (I'm a bit paranoid now and keep checking every hour) Thanks for your input Cindy

Lovey, he had no problems here. Willoe said they are not runny, solid, but he eats them before they hit the ground. Seems okay now He had a long car journey from here to his new home, approx 30 kilometres, also a new enviroment, and probably missing her siblings. But she will keep me informed Cindy

Well the Vet was not much help in the end. Each time I phoned to see when I could take them in ,she was out, and not on Vet visits, Bank, chemist, butcher - did not even return my calls to say come in. Finally my Neighbour, who's sons breed show budgies (pays over A$1000.00 for some) .came and said the same as Nerwen, he over-ate himself to death. Said as he was first bornn Dad gave him most of the food and the baby did not stop taking it and over filled his crop ?. Stomach was full of gas because food was not going down. The other babies are super healthy this morning, normal size for their ages and tweeting away when I picked them all up to check on them. Now I just have to find a better Vet. Cindy

That may be it in a nutshell, he was always eating. I checked the others about 20 mins ago, they look okay, but then it was by torchlight. I will check again tomorrow morning and if they are still the same I'll contact the Vet again. Cindy

No bruising Nerwen. His face was blue as though he suffocated. Just checked the others and there is no bruising there either. Will take them to Vet and let you know Cindy

What do i do??? Look like babies crops are not emptying Lost one baby 8 days old this morning, his crop was very full extending into wing area (It looked like that), also the crop was fulll of seed and almost transparent. the stomach was bloated (3 1/2 inches/9 cm in circumference) looked like it was full of water or gas, felt very solid, the poor little fellow was stilll very warm when I found him and his face was blue. Well her 2nd baby is starting to look the same way, also one of Rainbows baby is similar. The Seed has not been changed and they still get their same greens, so what can I do. Phoned Avain Vet. She said to take it to her as she has not heard of it before!!! As the 2 babies are both only 5 days old, is it safe to take them on a 30 - 45 minute drive, away from Mum in cold weather. I have never had this problem with my birds before They look so uncomfortable and I want to help them, so please can someone advise me Cindy
