I did the survey...it will be interesting to see the findings for sure. Those who have lost their budgies can relate (I know I can as I still can't believe precious Pretty is gone) he is the reason I found this site over 2 years ago. .
  2. oh congrats, Casper is so handsome, and the picture so fits the season
  3. awe that is so very cute, congrats
  4. as I stated in my previous post I assumed that she would probably settle once she was with her own kind, that is wonderful to hear she is doing much better.
  5. The V shape between the shoulders is what makes the bird opaline with the reverse pattern on the head not the blue running through the wings (some opaline have that some don't). From a front shot it doesn't look opaline. Are those all your birds?

Welcome , good to have you here on the boards. Here is an article about handrearing budgies BBC FAQ Article , I hope it helps a bit. What many people will do will put the chicks with another breeding pair who are raising chicks around the same age. I know members with more experience will be coming on in a couple hours as right now for many who breed it is night time. You may want to PM Norm or he may see this post as he is a breeder with experience too. Keep us updated, would love to see pics.
  7. I am in the US, I haven't seen anyone really come on here that have crested. I would love to see pictures of your crested.
  8. good to hear keep us updated
  9. Elly, I separated the birds straight away cause I knew she would kill him if I left them together. I have left the hen to raise them on her own (that'll teach her!) I was thinking that but didn't type it because I couldn't remember if that is what the breeders do since I don't breed I was remembering from memory. I agree I wouldn't chance it myself. How have the birds been?
  10. Cinnamon is a sex-linked gene Normal cock bred to a cinnamon female would yield all the cocks to be split to cinnamon (they would not be visually), all the hens would be normals. Normal hen bred to a cock split to cinnamon can yield you cinnaman females Cinnamon hen and a Cock split to cinnamon will yield you both male and female cinnamons Two Cinnamons bred together would be 100% cinnamon

I agree with Dave there is not one particular size all different sizes exercise their feet from curling their toes all the way around to being flat .
  12. 1st one looks female the oplane violet 2nd one looks male the skyblue 3rd with the real black cere not a clue 4th one I can't tell either Those are my guess... they are beautiful
  13. I think you may find she will settle down once she is introduced to your flock when she is out of quarantine. I would personally stop fussing on her and let her be as that is what she wants. She knows your presence is there and it would not be ignoring her. Fussing on her is only upsetting you and her and right now if you are going to let her join the flock you may find that she may settle once she sees the other birds are not frightful of you or she may attach to 1 of your budgies and follow their lead.
  14. it is hard to say what happened and why they do that budgies can get that why maybe she became overprotective and decided she didn't want him around at that time if she is a first time mom she could be insecure or if he is a first time dad I am sure someone with more experience will come on such as Kaz, Daz etc... I would keep an eye on the hen and her mate and if you see more squabbling you may have to separate them and let the hen simply feed them only if she won't accept the male's help.
  15. Welcome Back Your flock is a beautiful rainbow of colors .
  16. Budgies can have recreational sex and not actually lay so she (should) be okay there is the hen that will lay an egg on the aviary floor and if she does you can toss it or take her and her mate and put her into a breeding box. Don't put any breeding box in the aviary as that can cause problems. So if you get the okay closed breeding is a good decision.
  17. great job Nerwen, they are all beautiful birds
  18. hugs Kaz he was beautiful :budgiedance:
  19. the hardest part of rescue is dealing with the animal's behavior especially when it is negative as hers is and it is not fault of her own. even an aviary bird would probably not be as fearful as she is so she was definetly abused by someone and it is ashame there are many here in AU so maybe they can help you with finding her a possible aviary situation where she may be more suited, have your intro her to any of your birds or is quarantine not over yet?
  20. Are you keeping her cage covered on all 3 sides during the day? I assume she is doing this out of fear and this may help her calm down. Taking her back to the shelter if they would take her back would probably doom her fate.
