Trill Stars
I can never find Trill Stars over here, it seems to be a Xmas thing. I normally get hold of the Trill Toppers which are circles of seed with a centre filled with either nuts, egg, dried greens or fruit. Star doesn't eat them though just destroys them :fear

Pesticides aren't necessarily bad this is a broad term which covers many products. They could be using a preventative fungicide to stop the seeds going bad which would be more dangerous to budgies than if not used. It would be interesting though to find out what they mean. Another thing is that farmers use pesticides and perhaps it's a test to ensure that the source of the seeds they use don't exceed levels which are dangerous to budgies.

Calcium/cement Perches
Well I've got a couple of replies. Firstly Polly's managering director responded within hours with the below comments. "Thank you for your inquiry regarding the material in our products. We use only Stainless Steel and Nickel Plated Steel. We have had all products tested for years with Avian Veterinarians, Breeders, the University of Georgia, and not to mention our own birds." That's basically what I thought that Polly's as a premium brand do ensure that they use bird safe materials, their products are a little bit more expensive but they research their products. The other company who I won't mention yet has been a bit vague and their legal attorney wanted details of this post, they wanted to call me within minutes of my email :fear: I don't currently stock their products. Another link on metals in products. http://www.synnovation.com/zinctesting.html Just got a couple of others who I am awaiting replies from. One thing to remember is that if the product is really cheap then it's probably a cheap import from China or the far east and the only way to make it at that price is to use Zinc. Therefore only buy premium brands which you know are safe.

Calcium/cement Perches
I'm contacting Polly's Pet Products, Prevue (Hendryx) Pet Products & also Wagner Happy Bird (don't hold much hope with a reply from this one as they are in Germany and never respond to me enquiries). Once I have details I will post the information. Does anyone know whether steel goes rusty?

Calcium/cement Perches
If feel there's a bit of scaremongering here. Yes there are some very dodgy products on the market, mainly cheap unbranded imports or unknown brands however most of the premium brands are safe with regard to the calcium perches. I know that most of the concrete perches on the market will have a metal bar inside them which is how they are made. This can also apply to the wooden one's and they may even pose a greater risk as anyone can just add a fixing from any household store and this will probably contain a nasty chemical like Zinc. I source perches from Polly's http://www.pollyspetproducts.com/ which is a premium brand. I'll make some enquiries as to what metal is used, I believe it's steel but will check. The other calcium perches I sell are made by Prevue Hendryx I don't think they contain metal middles as they are moulded out of calcium/shell http://www.prevuepet.com/main.html Another thing is that with the concrete perches they should be removed if the birds are eating them as they are not designed to be eaten as they act as a pedicure. It is therefore the owners responsibility to remove any item which is worn as nothing lasts forever. Hope that helps and I don't think you need to remove any calcium perches unless the metal pole is showing (if it has one), my budgie has had his for months, loves sitting on it, nibbles it and I would never put him at risk.

They have a massive place over in the UK down the road from me. They have started to buy lots of things for the birds they have in the aviaries. The husbandry/keepers are great and look after the birds well. I'm trying to arrange a visit to have a lot at their set-up.
