Isn't the maximum recommended bar spacing for a normal sized budgie something like upto 1.2cm

Sometimes I find they go for the bars even more if you try and stop them. I just move things around the cage to the places where the chewing takes place.

There are various pedicure perches out there made from different materials. Sand covers don't tend to work and may cause issues with sore feet.
