I have owned several budgies and haven't had much trouble but the last bird I had died within the first day I owned her. I believe that it may have been the stress of moving that was too much for her because she looked healthy at the store. I would like to get another bird but I'm concerned about making the transition harder than it needs to be. Does anyone have any tips for moving by budgie in safely?

Hello Freestylebudgie. I would really say that your last bird must have been ill to die within a day. Most people that buy a bird from a pet shop bring them home in shoe boxes and I must of admit that I have done that once or twice, the birds are vary harder.

The only thing that would really do a budgie in on a trip is the heat, I would never travel a bird over 32 degrees.I would travel in the morning but not arvo unless you have air con in car.

I think there is a heat clause out there and some one might be able say what it is.

When you choose your bird check for wet vent or pooy vent. ask to feel the bird and see if the keel bone the the centre of the chest is really sharp. any of these things leave it there.

Check to see if it is bright eyed and bushy tailed lol but you know what I mean. and make sure it looks active, if it looks fluffed up leave it there too.

I hope this helps.

When I buy any birds they just go in the carry cage with seed and brought straight home and put in a quanintene cage ( I can never spell that word) lol. They get fresh seed, millet spray and water and left to settle in .

Hi FreeStyleRainbow,

With your cage problems, what I did, is put a cover where the sun could directly hit the cage, which meant that I was constantly moving the bag I was using for it, I also had a toy in the cage just so that my budgie could be eased. I think most importantly, is that I wrapped the seatbelt around the cage to stop from being a really bumpy ride.

Also, I got my Dad to drive slowly and smoothly (since he pretty much knows every single lump and bump to and from the bird store :D )

Oh, and Splatty? Just so you know your about to be beaten by a thirteen year old...... Quarantine :D :D :D

So you are thirteen Flip-trainer? That would explain why in your correcting of Splat regarding her spelling, you went and used the word your instead of you're.

Wow, that must sting a little bit - :D :D :D

Macka - that comment was not right, watch your step. I agree, it could be construed as offensive.

It looks like this thread is going a bit off topic. Lets get back to Freestyle Rainbow's original question, which was about transporting his budgie home safely.

Freestyle, I agree with Splat. It probably wasn't the trip home that caused your budgie to die. I've bought quite a few budgies and brought them home in small cardboard boxes, sometimes over a drive of a couple of hours. I've also sold a lot of baby chicks who went home in boxes or in cages their buyers brought with them. The trip home doesn't really seem to be an issue.
