Many years ago when i was a child, we used to put Budget outside with the other birdies...Well Budget pushed his head through the cage and got it stuck!! We used to think this was very funny and give him a scratch ( effectivly rewarding him for doing it) Meanwhile one day some sort of hungry bird ( butcher bird maybe) found Budget and pecked his head off while he was stuck !!I was devistated when i returned home from school to find my headless budgie..( still poking through the gap he'd made) Just thought id let others know about this...It prob seems obvious BUT not at the time...Poor Budget would had died a terrible terrible death...So i guess supervision is needed when birdies are outside ( even in cages) or make sure the bars on the cage only have very narrow gaps...I had another budgie that went down behind the fridge and also died...BUT its now been close to thirty years since ive had one ( baby budgie arrives on Friday!!) and ive never forgotten the feeling of finding him that way..We are so lucky to have this fantastic forum at our finger tips so as we can learn from others mistakes...To all those out there whom have lost their beloved birdies im very sorry and thank you for letting us learn from your misfortunes...Sincerley, Kirsty

Hi Kirsty,

My first budgie died from being pecked by a butcher bird too. I also had another one that drowned in the toilet. So boys (girls too), make sure you close the toilet lids!

One thing to note any budgie that can stick his head through the bars and get stuck it means too the cage bar width is too wide there are different size spaces for different birds.

i'm paranoid about cooking water! No birds, animals or children allowed out while cooking. The kids aren't even allowed in the kitchen when there is hot cooking going on. I have seen a baby chicken stepped on and it was awful, so I have a paranoia about things under my feet also!

Oooh thank you sooo much for all the safety hints. I would be totally devastated if anything happened to my two feathered buddies. :D

I often worry about Charley when he's out of his cage as he tends to fly around the room sometimes to the point of over tiring himself and threatens to hit the walls. It terrifies me. I try to encourage him to take short flights, i.e. from the cage to my arm (or head!!) but sometimes he takes off and goes around and around and around... I cant bear to watch yet need to see where he lands (sometimes on the floor, totally exhausted!) I'm a nervous wreck when he 'takes off'!! He generally ends up back on his cage but sometimes its as if he loses his way back!! I'm at the point where I limit the times I let him out now as it worries me too much.

Does anyone else find this problem with their budgies when they let them out to fly?

I would not be able to survive without him. He's my little mate.

(by the way he's learned more phrases this last two weeks... he now also says "what's for dinner?" and "look at me kimmy... look at me!!!!" has a total of around 16 phrases) :(

Again..thank you for all the "budgie safety" hints!!!

Have had a budgie fly full pelt into a window and break it's neck. Pull curtains and blinds before you let your bird out. If you have windows without curtains or blinds, rig a towel or sheet up in front of them as a barrier. Birds just don't see glass.

:D

That is all I can say.

There are some terrible stories in here :D :D

I am sorry for all your losses, and thank you for sharing so no one makes the same mistakes! What a horrible thing to experience.

I lost Buffy because I left her outside unsupervised. Fearless little warrior, she was not fazed by anything and was always curious to investigate new things. So when they neighbour's cat came she had no chance. She was clawed through the bars and that was enough for a fatal combination of infections to take her :(

I always worry about my budgies getting stuck behind things like bookshelves. I cover up any gaps if I can because there's no chance I could move something that big in time to remove a panicking bird before it hurt itself.

Thk, is there something your bird really loves and will come to you if you have it? I used to have that problem, even though I went to the smallest room so they couldn't get any momentum, but then I figured out that they adore lettuce or bread (as treats of course) and will come straight to me if they see it.

Another thing I worry about is stairs. I was carrying Milly to another room which is generally safe because she likes my shoulders, but one day mum burst in and gave her a fright. She made it to the stairs and I don't think she realised just how big the drop was - she exhausted herself going in circles slowly getting to the bottom level and landed quite hard on the bottom floor. She was winded but okay, but I was so scared, it could have been much worse. Now they go via the cage to different rooms.

It is a shame this wonderful internet wasn't around 20+ years ago so that we all could have avoided mistakes that costs the lives of our beloved budgies. We are lucky now that we can share our experiences with the ones just starting out so that they do not make the same mistakes we made.

What's that saying? "Those who do not learn from the mistakes of others are doomed to repeat them"

My friend was asleep and she heard banging (she dosnt know how long the banging went for) she woke up and found her budgie charlie in the bin with the lid shut. So she gave poor charlie a bath... Lucky she wsnt in the bin for long!

the worst death I have had is when my hen was egg bound or the time that a door closed on a budgies head. learn from that. don't have swinging doors open while budgies are out.

When I was in primary school a rat opened one of the sliding doors for the food dish on our budgie FunnyFace's cage and mauled him.

Dad found the kitchen walls splashed with blood the next morning and the rat still in the cage, he took the cage outside and doused it in petrol and burned the rat, cage and all.
