Starting Out!
visit shows look at the birds that are winning get them in your mind then arrange for aviary visits don't buy just go and look listen to the breeders and look at their birds most honest show breeders will let you look around their set up and give advice. then when you are ready visit the breeders again the ones that stood out breeder and birds . if finances allow buy 3 to four pairs if you can get them from just two breeders, do not buy the most expensive get his young birds in the uk for a starter i would not advise paying more than £40 to £50 a pair as for what you need the same breeding equipment as for pet birds always show to show when beginning stock birds are the majority of birds kept by show breeders not good enough to win shows but all have good points and faults and it is the skill of the breeder to pair these birds up and breed in the good points and out the bad points stock birds probably make up some where in the region of 95 % of birds a breeder keeps

What Does It Take To Show A Bird.
this is how i prepare as daz said i collect my team up i normally select team a and team b team a my best birds with team b being my reserve birds both are treated the same this way if one or more of team a lose a feather or spot it can be replaced with a bird thats in equal show condition even if not as good it is always of the up most inportance to have your bird in tip top condition 8 to 10 weeks birds are put into show cages and marked up by me i hope to get 6 birds for team a and the same for team b they are all hand washed using johnsons baby shampoo then they are placed into there teams and each team into a double length breeding cage a check on their weight and condition i find the birds are normally okay or slightly underweight once they have been in the flights so extra soaked groats is fed greens are cut down and if you feed your seeds cod liver oil this is reduced to stop thier droppings being to runy the cages are cleaned every day especially the perchs to keep their feet and faces clean i start of spraying warm water three times a week if any tail feathers are broke i will remove them but only one at a time (although some people will remove both) two to three weeks i will be spraying my birds every two days i will then deal with any pin feathers and the week before i will turn to the spots i dont pull these but cut them as they will last all season once done where as pulling will have to be done more than once it also causes a little bruising which in turn could cause the main spots to fall out also about two weeks before the first show i put the birds in show cages for a few hours to get use to them and to get use to people walking close by if their any really flighty birds they some time come in the house to spend more time getting use to people ive probably missed something out as i tend to this on auto now

Please Can You Judge Jupiter For Me?
from the first picture the first thing you notice is the width of face and lack of spots the irregular spotscould just be the way the spots are resting but they do look small as daz said the frontal dosent sweep out and the back skull is not rounded and full the wings dont look rite on the first picture but its hard to tell good shoulders as daz said but he looses it around the perch area and of course the flecking will lose points as said its a definate show bird just one that fails to fulfill on the bench but most of the great birds have been bred from birds along these lines as you cant buy the better ones

-
Budgerigar Type Terminology
now i have never seen the pet bird descibed this way in print i just cant see how thats right. english budgies yea i can see why although i hate it, it should be show, but american budgie when if you think about it is a pet bird the same as anyware in the world no different, so why american why not russian, chinese, french american is not used in europe cant comment really on any were else but surly if it is the right term to use it should be used every were if not shouldnt we attempt to point this out to stop people getting confused
-
Budgerigar Type Terminology
all my bird clubs use the description show and pet budgies
-
Budgerigar Type Terminology
for me its nothing to do with comfort its to do with practability and ease of understanding for every one although i have kept budgies for years and show birds for over 10 years when i first heard american all them years ago when i joined here i was a little confused i actually thought they were smaller than our pet birds but still larger than wild ones whether it would change or not i still think the point should be made if someone was calling a df spangle a lutino people would point it out must admit this confuses me even more why people are defending a term which most people dont use what for pointing something out rude
-
Budgerigar Type Terminology
i dont think its nitpicking to be honest if they were called pet and show birds instead of english and american onm here then nobody would be confused would they is pointing out to somebody that the term american isnt really correct as you have said most places and people in america dont call them american budgies so whats the problem its not just the term american budgie i dont like its english budgie as well that i dont like we have show birds and pet birds as far as i am concerned the same as america belgium china the only place i would say has three would be australia wild, pet and show to me these terms just make it so much simpler i call them show and pet but according to people on here i should call them english and american ?? now that would be confusing

Budgerigar Type Terminology
sorry but this is way wrong you will find there are more pet birds than show birds in the uk which are exactly the same as the pet birds in america same size colour shape feathering no difference at all pet birds in america and europe are larger than there wild cousins a simple question america :- show bird standard = english budgie pet budgie = american budgie england :- show bird standard = english budgie pet budgie = what then do we start calling them american budgies pet birds in the usa and gb are exactly the same exactly to size colour shape ect they have not changed one bit i could post a picture of a usa pet bird and a gb pet bird and nobody would be able to tell the difference but if i post a show standard bird against a pet bird they could
