  1. exactly that is why its easier to say pet and show so we dont complicate things why is it nitpicking because we dont agree with you ? you dont see why and i dont see why not exactly its all about opinion yours and others and nothing to get so up tight about in my opinion
  2. because they are show and pet type birds whats more confusing haveing a pet bird in the uk but calling it an american budgie ? they are pet it bugs me when people call them american when they are not
  3. i think the difference between what people on here call american and english is the standard american budgies are the same as pet budgies in every other country no difference hence there is no such thing as an american budgie just pet english budgies are the same as show budgies in every other country so hence there is no such thing as an english budgie just show again its just a standard there all dogs just bred for a different standard (does that make sense i'm on night shift and nothing looks right to me )
  4. oh how true
  5. i always check for ringing at 5 days if you get that extra special baby by 7 days i will guarantee the ring will not fit if the ring falls of so what you haven't lost anything
  6. i have the first and second edition if somebody has not read the book buy the second edition as there are extra chapters
  7. short mask, very poor spots, narrow and short head, hinged tail cant really tell about size
  8. there are bus loads of english breeders who visit joe every year for birds and he will not let any one leave without a bird even if you dont have the money he will give you are a pair (but you must ask the right questions ect )

depending on age raise max 2 clutches lay max 3 clutches if i want another clutch of a potential pair or want a hen to breed with 2 cocks i will let her have two rounds and raise the chicks with one cock bird then swap her over with another then foster the eggs but i must stress this is only done rarely exhaustion for both hen and cock
  10. if you have the time i would try and feed it till about 7 day old the replace in the nest box it will then be bigger and noisier so should stand a better chance of being fed
  11. ah i never thought of that :hap:
  12. why havnt you pinned it ?? come on now do your job and very good
  13. i use an ioniser have done for a couple of years now
  14. to me honest daz not sure i have had birds that are flecked and produce all flecked chicks and some like the photo that dont produce any

im with nerwen here a lot of new hens take a while to use the box but she will in time
  16. a mentor is an even better way to do it and it is a good idea to keep lines going if you have purchased older birds
  17. i would keep away from a flecked bird till your stud is formed then you can gamble on one and if the chicks are flecked dont use him again as a high percentage of chicks will be flecked and will pass the flecking on to their chicks father and son all chicks were clear from this cock bird and all their chicks clear as well i got him for half of what he was worth if he didnt have the flecking he came from a championship winning line
  18. no problem i have been pretty quiet
  19. i place all hens in a breeding cage and all cocks in a seperate one i then get 6 show cages now i feel it is the hen that is the most important part of the pair so i take a hen place her in a show cage then have a good look for positives and faults then have a look at your cock birds see which ones can improve then place them one cock bird per show cage and put these cages next to the hen one at a time and study both birds then go with your instincts but if you can have a picture of the standard with you as well then it will help to look at that then the birds dont try and picture the standard all ways have one you can see its a lot easier
  20. i give mine about 4 to 6 weeks to get in to condition i dont give anything extra same good quality seed, water, fresh veg, cuttle, iodene, mine get eggs and carrots every other day and every day once the eggs hatch, mine also get two doses a week if proabotics also after the first clutch i start to give a calcium supplement as above once i find the eggs are not fertile i will take them away straight away and block the nest box hole up for approx 3 to 4 days and then let them go again after about 4 days if you candle them you should start to see the veins forming feeding syringes, olive oil for egg bound hens and a way to get heat to the hen if needed
  21. did you have a system
  22. out of curiosity what made you pair these birds, the breeders you bought them from or some one else or did you decide
  23. grey to grey wont reduce the size of chicks straight away it takes a while but it will give df greys which are undesirable as for light green opaline dont pick a colour before going and looking at what a breeder has to offer get the best you can afford
  24. most birdrooms here in the uk dont have or need heating but the show breeders do due to the fact most of us start our breeding november december and it can get cold -9 last year i think was the coldest with out wind chill facter my bird room is made of wood and is twin skined with loft insulation in the walls and ceiling (also keeps it cooler in the summer) it has electric so i use a oil filled radiator for safty reasons ie no smell for the birds this is coupled up with a thermostat that keeps the minimum temp at 12 degrees as i like to keep the air fresh so have a dust extracter as well as a air extracter
