it is slightly ie size if a cat jumps on a cage it will rock the cage maybe pull same over and there is no where for the bird to fly to so scaring it to death is more likley when in a aviary the cat can jump on but the area is a lot larger for the bird to fly away and it wont pull the aviary over plus aviarys should be double wired to protect your birds probably thats why i would deal with the cat

not arguing but a cat can jump very high and if it gets its caws hooked on to the cage it could pull it down if not the shock could kill the bird hence its easier to deal with the cat

looks good but another one with out a safety door the amount of birds lost by people entering the aviary to feed clean and water it should be one of the main concerns when building an aviary

i think you would find it difficult to get your birds in on a night i know most of mine in my retirement flights sleep out side no matter how cold it gets and they have access to inside flights
  11. its a fault its called flecking and is usually past down from parent to chick opalines are the main culprit to start this off
  12. daz all my pairs are put in show cages first so that i asses their faults and good points
  13. if it works for you daz use it my set up is to introduce the hen with two hours of day light left then the cock with one hour of daylight left and leave them over night (i have found this way less hens reject the male) i place a thin piece of card with a hole in it over the whole of the nest box for the hen to rip out i start the count of days to the first egg from the next morning most times the 1st egg will appear on the 7th day with the rest on the 8th but theres always the odd pair that take longer my breeding season starts soonaround nov i will pair twos pairs like you daz to see what happens

i love my dog the same as i love my budgies but if it got into next doors garden and killed their rabbit i dont think the excuse of its only doing whats natural to it would wash somehow even though she is a border terrier and that is natural for her the only doing natural argument is over used

the price of cages over here compared to the US is shocking i would seriously check out how much it would cost to send them over
  17. same as daz except i would take the hen away and just leave the cock to feed them

the male at 6 to7 years is on the old side for breeding i would say that one of them is infertile the only way you will be able to tell is to breed with different partners this is certainly not true seperate them for 10 to 14 days then introduce them to their new partners
  20. for a breeder like me it isnt a massive problem as i usually put 4 to 5 pairs down at the same time so usually have some place to foster a chick out but for people who breed one or two pairs at a time it is a catch 22 but personaly i would always let them hatch some hens will raise 9 chicks
  21. you could take eggs out at the beginning but are all of them fertile will any die in the shell you could end up with only one chick hatching and the hen might not feed that one+
  22. leave them to it if all nine hatch it will be hard and i wouldnt be suprised if the last two didnt die but there is a chance they will all survive as she is a first timer i wouldnt let her have another clutch till she has a rest
  23. there use to be some photos on daz if there not there i will take some more
  24. i started with a 6 foot x 4 foot shed small flight and a couple of cages now in a 15 foot by 7 foot twin skin purpose built bird house full electrics and heating two flights and 16 breeding cages what ever you decide to make or buy give it a lot of thought to what you want to do ie just keep a few birds or try breeding its easier to do it once than a few times and cheaper
