    daz i would remove the inside perch your birds will not nee them my boxs are 12 inchs deep (the bottom 3inchs sawdust ) and 6 inch square ,if you leave the perch in the chicks will still leave earlier

  6. i to would like to thank the people for their responces, with pet birds their is no need to evan closly breed relatives we do use linje breeding in show birds i have use it my self but at the moment dont as i am improving on quality at the moment (because of what happened to my original stud) so am using out crosses

    used a new recipe for the chicks and mother last year a cube of bread soaked in milk as well as soft food my results to chicks surviving was up by about 15 % coincidence ?
  9. as it was out of the nest are you sure it was not the father did you provide a platform so the chick could hide underneath

  11. daz enter as many shows as you can and get the experiance it is always good to put your birds up against others to see how they do and where you have to improve plus getting them in show condition takes practice

    ponds should be find if you take a couple of simple precautions don't have the water to deep and make the edges slope very gradually with sand so if they get water logged they can get out easily

    dont know about the wig clipped explanation as i dont clip any wings bot a bird like that in the show cage is said to have a hinged tail and it is a major fault

    if this is the second clutch they should be fine to rear if more than second in a year they will need to be destroyed as to cleaning the box now i personaly would leave them nobody cleans them in the wild and clean when chicks about seven days

    is she a young hen on her first clutch ? i have had hens like this lay just one egg none have hatched but went on to be good mothers next clutch another one to watch for is egg bound does she look distressed panting

    if you have a camera you could post a picture of each bird and we will be able to help with what you have untill then i would remove nest boxs ect if they lay without a nest box which is unusual you can through the eggs out till we know more

    eight is a lot but they could handle them how long since the first clutch if the second clutch is straight after the first then i would foster out either 3 eggs or chicks. are they due to hatch around the same time if possible i like to foster chicks not eggs and only when they have been ringed so i know which is from which clutch also if you foster chicks and wait you will be able to see if all the eggs hatch if some dont then you wont need to foster at all

    mice wont attack but a rat certainly will and take the bird if it catches it a friend lost 3 birds to rats before he realized he had a problem the hole was only a little bigger than a mouse hole he put cement down and the rat chewed back through it the glass certainly stopped it
