Expanding My Flock
You did well at $10 each. I would move them inside as a rat will easily get in that cage and kill your birds, and I should know because it happened to me with a similar cage on my verandah. And watch out for snakes and butcher birds as well.

Are Auctions Killing Our Hobby
As a newbie who has only been breeding show budges for 1 year this month, I can honestly say this is a hard hobby to be in. I have never had a member from my club ring me to find out how I'm going or offer to look at my birds and give some advice. I'v always had to ring them for advice etc, now I'm not blaming them totally as I do live a distance from them and I don't go to meetings because the night the meetings are on doesn't work for me. This is a lonely hobby so whats the point of it? Auctions well there good fun but I'v lost many a bird that I have purchased from them. I also have been told by breeders when trying to purchase birds that they wont sell me birds they can get more money for at the auctions but are always willing to sell me there sparrows. Some of the birds I got from auctions I have sold to my sons friends for $10 as a pet because there useless in the breeding cabinet. Auctions are a good place to meet others, but even at the auctions members don't sit together lol I have spent a lot of money setting up for this hobby, building aviary, birds, breeding cabinets etc was it worth it? time will tell I guess. And another thing I have found is that people laugh at me when I tell them I breed show budgies, what's the go with that? I'll battle along on my own with my son and just maybe we'll show them up one day at a show. I'm happy with my flock and will not be buying any more. I have bred some nice birds but there still only 2 to 4 months old but looking promising. Really if I hadn't found this forum and got all the great advice from people on here, I would have given up the hobby after 6 months.

A Strange Love Affair
Budgies can be very strange creatures indeed, I have had cock birds do this and have found them to be useless in the breeding cage as they never fill eggs just perches lol. As for the hen she is just frustrated with her mate and is taking it out on the perch Try a different cock bird who is more experienced.

How Many Is Too Many
I'v been told 4 per nest for show budgies, any more and they recommend fostering them out to another nest with babies of the same age. Just keep in eye on the youngest ones as they may need help with feeding down the track. If the parents are coping at the moment then just watch and see how the babies are progressing.

Murphy's Law Of Budgie Breeding
I just went away camping with the kids for a week and I thought I would get my parents to look after my birds for me. I went through every thing with my dad and how things work inside and outside the aviary. Well where 8 hours away and I thought I better give them a ring before we get out of mobile range to see how things are going, and I get told that dad has ripped the aviary door of it's hinges lol, They then went on to tell me that I hadn't put it on very well I then asked which way did he open the door? outward I was told no no no it only opens inward. Dad had just keep pulling door the wrong way till he ripped it of it's hinges even after I had shown him many times how it work, they spent the next few hours with mum holding the door while dad tried to fix it, both are 71 lucky for them no birds escaped I also have lost 2 nice hens that I got from one particular breeder and another 2 that I have purchased from auctions.
