Sex Of Budgie?
It does alot of that screeching sound, esp when one of the hens that we have go off. But the screeching is nowhere near as frequent as our other two hens. It chews on the plastic thing containing seed. It does occasionally do the head bobbing, but any sex can do that. I do know when we tried to introduce Jessie our one hen in her age, Jessie promptly tried to attack it. As far as singing it does not really sing like our newest male does. Hope this helps any, problem with the age thing is we got it at a pet shop and they have no records of age and or lineage. It's bite is more of a nibble type. personally I was going to say male, but the daughter says a female, she wants a pair. I know the hen attacked it when placed in the cage, the same hen has been placed in with a male and did not try to have a go at the male any. So you can see my confusion, lol. I have been researching both sexes behavioiur till I am cross eyed lol. The daughter said that the cere keeps changing colour to an extant, I have looked but it looked the same to me. You mentioned pale blue with white at that age, but aren't the recessive pieds different when it comes to cere colours. Sorry about the length of this, but as you can see, I am totally baffled and told the daughter not to get her hopes up, for it might turn out to be a male. lol, maybe it will lay an egg and end this mystery mayhem.

Sex Of Budgie?
I hope this one is okay, the bird sits still, but as soon as a camera comes out, wham she does all she can to avoid it. Taken in natural light and a darkish background, that is a pillow behind the cage lol. Thanks everyone for your patience, I think this bird is sick of the camera now, rofl

Swing Bell Removal Game
Our hen Jessie, has now found a new thing to do. She has succeeded in completely removing the seed feeder, one slight problem, as she has found out. She had a fast ride down to the bottom of the cage with it. We had heard a crashing commotion in the cage but could not work out what it was. After a careful scan of the cage, we had found out that it was indeed the feeder that she managed to unhook from the cage. We then did an experiment, and found that no matter where we put the thing at, she is trying to remove it. will have to come up with plan B for another feeder, for when Ollie comes out of quarantine and gets moved in with her. On another note, Kramer picks up the bell takes it up to a high perch and lets it fall down to the bottom, if he is trying to impress his mate Hedwig, she doesn't seem to be lol.

Sex Of Budgie?
Will try a better picture, funny thing is we used the same camera on Jess and Darla, maybe it has to do where the cages are situated. Or we were trying to hard to get the cere shot of Darla, and we were just taking one of Jess cause we could not stop laughing at her after that bath. Thanks again Kaz, hope your enjoying the cooler weather if it is out there, we got a southerly yesterday, a big help in cooling both us and the birds down.

Jess
Here is a better picture of Jessie's cere, we are pretty sure Jess is female. Pardon the way she looks, it was hot yesterday and she decided to go for a dunk in her birdbath, I couldn't resist taking this shot. my bad.

Sex Of Budgie?
I just asked my wife and she said, 4-6 months of age. We tried to place another budgie in with it, and the other budgie had a go at it, so we had to seperate them. I am guessing it is a recessive pied. Someone said to us that it was a harlequin. Oh the joy of the different varieties. We are truly thankful for this forum. It is a very big help to us.

Sex Of Budgie?
I said it was a male, we had at least three others around our area say it was a male. The daughter is not so sure, so we posted the picture on here. It was taken in natural light with a digital camera, we finally managed to capture a shot where the budgie was not moving and make the picture blurred.

Bird Feeder Humour
Our hen Hedwig has a latest behaviour at the bird feeder thingy. The feeder is a plastic one that hangs onto the cage. She was sitting on the feeder trying to lift it off of the side of the cage. As she was sitting on it, she could not take it off and started screeching at it. It was quite hilarious. I was like, hey, you have to not stand on it to do it. The Bird sort of gave me a look was as if to say "shut up". Kramer our male, just sat off to the side looking quite amused by it. I think she flew over to him and gave him one peck on the head, as if to say, stop laughing at me.

Violet Hen
we have all the mite treatment stuff lined up and we have the area for quarantine all lined up. We've moved Ollie to a different area as extra precaution. He seems okay so far and we don't want him to be affected by anything. lol, the place where we get the bird supplies will think all their Christmases came early lol. As soon as we get the birds, we will post pics, The wife said it was ten breeding pairs, I was not sure of the number. The first two hens will work out great once they clear quarantine, as our daughter's birds are two males.

Violet Hen
Stop the press, we are now getting TWO hen budgies absolutely FREE . Should be within the next day or two, PLUS our neighbour is going to help us build a massive aviary, because the guy does not want his birds anymore. so to date make that THREE Hens on the way. This has been a very surreal day, we only wanted one at the moment, but now are getting THREE. Plus a whole heap more from the guy who is giving them up. More details at 11, lol

Violet Hen
We ran into another breeder who also has violets. We are going to be purchasing a violet hen from them on Feb 4th. We now are in the process of looking around for a possible mate for her, we figure something off the wall to mate with her. So much for us telling each other, this will be the last budgie for awhile.

Budgie Keeping Cool
Jessie, our budgie decided to use the little bath dish to cool off yesterday. She got out of the dish and her entire breast was white and looked grey instead of blue. We thought it was weird that it wasn't just blue feathers wet, but actually looked grey. We will post a picture of before and after when she dips in the bath again, we were caught off guard and did not have camera nearby when she did it last time. She also keeps throwing the bells off the swing into the water.

Budgie Singing
actually Sean, We just got him yesterday. The Petshop lady said they got him at the age of four months, everyone kept passing him over, apparently because of his green, they wouldn't want him and go for another colour. We saw him last week and instantly "fell in love" with him. I think he must know some of the Finch stuff, because he set our daughter's finches off with some call that sounded like those. Our other male budgie heard him and kept cocking his head up against the cage, it seemed like it was trying to learn what Ollie was doing. I heard Kramer this morning almost repeating Ollie. Can't wait until quarantine is over, then he can join our other bird named Jessie. I do know that Lorikeets that go by the window every so often set off all the budgies. I thoroughly love all six Budgies, as each has their own quirks and mannerisms that make them unique. One thing in common with them is they all love to take off the bells. Jessie took off the bell and proceeded to throw it into her water dish, I had to do bell fishing, she hasn't done it again, but give her time

New To The Forum - Sharing Happy Thoughts.
Wow, that green Budgie looks just like our latest addition. It was named Ollie, after one of my favourite all time comedy acts, okay half of the act. Welcome to the forum! They have been a big help to us and we get a pleasure out of reading all the post, esp the humourous ones.

Budgie Singing
Ollie, our latest addition is still in quarantine. He has settled in well and was eating within like five minutes and then he started his singing. Toni was wondering, because he is making sounds she has never even heard before. Her Uncle Charlie had 50 breeding pairs of budgies and she had never heard that from a Budgie before, it is like he has incorporated other bird sounds into his repertoire. He sounds absolutely gorgeous. She said it sounds like it might have been from one of the parrots and or other birds they have in the pet shop.

Our Latest Addition, Ollie
He is very hard to get a front on shot, he either turns sideways or turns his back on us, rofl. Will try to sneak a frontal soon, I do know he is yellow faced and Ollie is his name, hmmmm might name a future male Stan, ya never know

New Budgie On Thursday
The Brightly coloured Budgie is home and doing quite well. He is adjusting rather quickly. He has a yellow face, a bright green belly and tail. I am going to get batts for Camera so expect pics soon. While we were there we also picked up a sky blue budgie with white speckled blue through them. The Brightly coloured budgie we named Ollie, after Tom's favourite comedy duo, Laurel & Hardy. The other Budgie is named Jimmy, not sure on that reason lol. Tom & Toni

Swing Bell Removal Game
I wonder if Budgies are automatically attracted to green or just hate the colour green, lol. We had an all green swing in the cage and they totally ignored it, so we switched it with a white one, now they won't stay off it. The Green Bell is the only one they bother to take off of the swing ignoring the other two colours. So I switched the other two with two green ones, Kramer is beside himself he can't decide which bell to remove first, he starts with one, then goes to the next, then the next, and all three stayed on. He finally worked out and took off the bottom one and his mate Hedwig took off one of the side ones, before the swing capsized and they flew to a perch for safety lol. Then Hedwig turned and screeched at the swing rofl. We enjoy the antics, you never know what they will do next, our other budgie Jesse, keeps trying to pick up the bell and take it to the swing and put it back on, but she has not worked out her coordination. Can't wait till tomorrow, I pick up our latest addition, lol the latest description he gave it was fluoro green. No matter what description it is beautiful, oh I also have to pick up two male zebra finches for the daughter, she wants Finches as her main bird of choice. Well better go, the Budgies are making a fuss over something, gots to go sort it out lol.

Purple(violet) Budgies
These would be pet ones. Sorry about the confusion, I forget that there are ones for show and ones for pets lol. This was the breeder where we got Kramer, our violet budgie, from. We were just looking for a Budgie and he happened to be still available for sale,we grabbed him right away. He kept eyeing my dinner off that I had set next to the cage, and had gone off to do something else real quick, I was told he kept looking and kept sliding over to where the dinner was, when he realized he was being watched, he slid back to the other side of the perch and kept doing that till I got back, lol

The Angel
Hey Chirpy, That Budgie on your siggy. We have one that is almost identical to it. We had to do a double take on it. What is the mutation/variation of it?? We have heard it was a Harlequin/recessive pied. Thanks, Toni & Tom PS that poem is so beautiful and sad at some parts, thank you for sharing it

Purple(violet) Budgies
We saw an ad in the paper in our area, we called him up. We asked of what types does he have. He rattled off a few colours such as blue, white, then he said he had few purple ones for sale, if anyone is interested, pm us and we will give the number of the breeder. He is based in Wollongong area of NSW. We bought a bird from him before, they looked all healthy and well kept. Just wanted to pass that information along. As we have been told that Violets are rare, whether that is true or not as this guy has a few of them. Hope everyone is having a great day. Tom & Toni :sadsorry:

Need Help Naming My Two New Violet Boys :)
What we did, is sit and observe them awhile. Our Kramer got his name, from the antics that reminded us of Kramer from Seinfeld. Hedwig because of her personality and the white colour. Jessie was named by the son, still have no ideal how he got that name, other then it can go either way in regards to sex of bird.

Budgie Hens
Quarantine is meant to be in another cage in another room at least 5 metres away and in other airspace. Psittacosis brought in by a carrier bird who doesnt show symptoms will go through a whole room in no time at all. Incubation a week to ten days. You need to be far more careful and educated with quarantine than you are right now. Maybe I should have done the post instead of hubby Jesse had been quarantine in another area for two months, vet said Jesse is over her problem, hubby should have said that, now Jesse is allowed near the other birds, we are trying to introduce them to each other. but a hedwig doesn't seem to like Jesse at all, Kramer on the other hand is more curious about Jesse, hedwig just keeps screeching at poor Jess. Toni

Budgie Hens
We are starting to think Jesse is definately a female because we checked the cere after putting the cages near each other and Jesse's cere has gone a little more white, there is now very little blue between the nostrils. Poor Kramer was going crazy so to speak and his cere has now gone a deeper purple. Hedwig has gone a deeper brown. But there is still tension between hedwig and Jesse, but it is easing.

Budgie Hens
Our undetermined sex budgie Jesse, is in another cage. Due to quarantine we have her in another cage, it sits lower than the main cage. Hedwig, the undisputed hen(brown cere), would look down on the cage and go into a frenzy over Jesse being in the cage below. Everytime Kramer our male would even get near that side of the cage, Hedwig would go nuts over it and as soon as Kramer would go away from that side of the cage she would calm down. She watched Jesse like a hawk. I had to put something over the top of the cage and Hedwig calmed down and moved away from that side of the cage. Jesse would also hang off the top of the cage as well, although she could not see Hedwig as well as Hedwig could see her. Hedwig also looked like she was ready to jump all over Jesse, thank God for cages lol. Jesse is the one bird we said had the light blue cere with thin white circles around the nostrils. Toni is wondering if the hostile reaction Hedwig is showing towards Jesse is another indication that Jesse is indeed a hen as well, we had Hedwig out of the cage for her out of cage time, Kramer and Jesse were fine, we then took Kramer out of the cage and Hedwig and Jesse fluffed up and glared at each other. we do the out of cage time at different times due to it being easier to catch one bird then all three at once and to prevent any violence between Hedwig and Jesse. I know this covers more than one subject, but the main thrust falls under budgie behaviour Tom & Toni
