  1. The only thing I was sure of was the pied part. Thanks Mirren & Ratzy, lol seems like we can't get away from the spangle.
  2. This is the oldest and youngest chicks from Kramer and Hedwig. The middle chick was in the box at the time. It is exactly like the oldest one who is on the left, only with a pied spot on the back of the head. The youngest one is almost a spitting image of Kramer.
  3. As most of you know, when we go window shopping,we usually wind up purchasing another budgie lol. Meet Hagrid, I could be wrong, but he looks like a violet danish recessive pied. I was going to walk out of the shop, until he turned around and I saw the violet all over him, lol.
  4. We checked into the nesting box earlier. She has laid to date 7 :thankyou: eggs. A quick candling of the eggs in the nest, show five fertile, and we are guessing the last two are still early to tell. We are hoping she don't lay past eight as we have no foster parents, I doubt hedwig would accept a chick, given her three are leaving the box now. So we are keeping our fingers crossed. She don't stay out of box long, as soon as we put it down, she was on her way down to it. She does not exit when I tap on the box, she is so different from Hedwig, I guess I have to throw out what I learned from Hedwig, regarding the hen lol. She came out of the cage and saw the baby budgie in the cage across the room and gave a "where did you come from" look, lol. Unless Ollie is split for something, I am guessing these will all be green split for blue.
  5. Here is the oldest Chick sitting on top of the mineral block. Sorry if not clear, due to wife's meniere's disease, she can't stand very still due to lack of balance.
  6. yeah, I am learning as I go, Just recently found out that spangle is dominant, but only a double factor one will produce all spangles lol. Learned heaps about Genetics, and got heaps to go. Got lots of help from this forum and I refer alot to Ken Yorke's Budgie Variety Bible.
  7. so if a male is showing opaline, he is a double factor opaline. Just a question to reinforce my hunches lol
  8. okay, on day 24 the oldest one was out of the nest. Hedwig was wigging out, so I put it back in the box. So far it has not wandered back out again. Have placed seed and millet inside of box for all three. The youngest of the three is going to look the most like Kramer, the other two like the mother with the exception of a very blue breast. The first two are definitely spangle, the youngest one favours Kramer. Kramer has taken a greater interest in the nesting box hole, provided he isn't getting chased away by Hedwig, lol. I reckon by Friday which is the 28 day mark, they will start to come out of the box. Hard to believe it's been four weeks almost, and no sooner then we get these three raised, then we start the whole cycle again with the other pair. The youngest of the three is throwing really violet feathers in the back and tail. The other two seem to be almost like a turqouise colour. I don't think Kramer is split for cinnamon as it has not shown up on any of the offspring. Will try to post more pics up, but they are moving around alot more then they first did lol.
  9. lol, what's everyones opinion on the whistler brand of budgerigar food. There is a special going on at the shops. I normally buy trill.
  10. I am wondering if the youngest isn't female, I pick it up to hold and all it does it bite me rofl. We are hoping it's female, we plan on keeping the youngest regardless of sex. Come to think of it, they all bite me,lol.
  11. There is the ultimate indicator :gday: if it lays an egg :emoticon112:
  12. The egg count is 5 now, she laid one on Friday and tonight. Back to egg hatching watch lol. We are projecting the first egg to hatch on the 18th.
  13. pics not so clear, but if that is white on the cere and it's light blue, it's definitely a hen. Can tell you from experience. Any white on cere usually is hen
  14. Thanks Dean for that information. I appreciate it :nest:
  15. In my reading and studying, I remember or at least I think I did. Something that said the female will determine the sex of the chicks. I might be confused in all of this, but is that because of the X and Y in regards to the two X's of the cock. Or does outside factors mitigate it, such as an imbalance of male and female budgies. At the time of Hedwig laying her eggs, there was 8 cocks and 7 hens.
  16. lol, we got a budgie named skye. Although I called her a few choice names when we got her after she bit me several times while refusing to get into her quarantine cage lol.
  17. The oldest Chick at 22 days
  18. Just curious, we aren't really trying to get one. The youngest chick of Kramer and Hedwig is showing a brilliantly violet tail. Is there anyway to tell if it inherited both parents violet factor.
  19. We have made up birth certificates for our baby budgies and have developed a care fact sheet using the Budgie's point of view. Such as, I need lots of love and tender care. We have included pics of what both the cock and hen look like. And we are going to put on it the variation and mutations the bird actually is.
  20. A first for me, I actually got a hen to sit quietly on my finger. I can actually gently stroke her feathers with one finger. The last seven hens, hmmmm I've been bitten too many times to remember lol. I had been actually looking for a yellowface for sometime, but there were usually none around when we window shopped. We basically try to get birds we don't have, especially different variations and mutations. I think the only one we have more than one of is Stan and Harley, both are grey greens. I did actually see a true olive green there, so perhaps a later time grabbing the true olive green. She has been treated and all, now it's just waiting out the quarantine period. She hears the others down the other side of the house and chirps out. It is funny she keeps trying to look for them and they do the same.
  21. Holy Toledo, your right I do feel sorry for that hen.
  22. We have that problem with Kramer, very rarely he shows violet in the pictures.
  23. I agree be careful, that is alot of money to pay out. We got lucky and got Kramer for 15 dollars and would not sell him for any amount of money. He is our first one and our official mascot lol.
  24. Our budgies go nuts over silver beet, as finnie said I clip them on the cage near the perch they hang out. Sure enough curiosity overwhelms them and they just have to investigate. We have to put two of each in regarding the silverbeet, as it can be an all out fight over it,lol.
  25. Well here is Kramer lol again...............
