  1. Our second longest paired Budgies are now breeding. She laid her first egg about a half hour ago. She is a cobalt blue and Ollie is a normal green budgie("the fluoro Budgie")lol. So back to the beginning of the cycle. Have started the Budgie starter and put in egg and biscuit and all the other stuff we are giving the first pair.
  2. Thanks Dean, It is the only one of the three to have that spot. Father is a single factor violet. His Dad was a violet and Mum was white. Do not know what Hedwig's parentage is, the curse of buying from pet shop. she is white all over with either a mauve or violet suffusion, starts about halfway down her chest and she has mauve on the back between the wings.

Hey chewy looks like my hen Jessie, lol. Same build and colours lol.
  4. sorry if it appears blurry, It was too curious, looking around at everything, lol
  5. We were handling the chicks today. We noticed on the middle chick, that it had a lighter part of skin on it's head, the rest of the chick was darker and purplish. The spot is pink. We are curious, we will post a picture of it tomorrow, if we can get it lol.

    good luck on your endeavours
  7. okay, my head is spinning after that GB, rofl. Goes and looks on the Ken Yorke Variety Bible, and I say it looks male. I thought our recessive pied was female, until I saw an identical one in a pet shop the same size as ours and when it turned around the cere was brown.

Well this is our very first time, lol. Alot of the credit goes to Kaz and you all on here for all the helpful advice. :rip: . Kramer keeps watching the nesting box entrance lol, I don't think he will try to go back in it again, the hen screeched at him, the last time he tried.

:rip: Here is the oldest one at 13 days. The tail is just starting to appear.

The oldest is Ten days old, the other two are 8 & 7 days old. This was before we changed the nesting boxes.

We have it sticking into one of the three doors. It is resting on a stack of sturdy books. Kramer is out in the cage area. The Cage is pretty big. We have Two Budgies to a cage and no more. We have four nesting boxes, three at the moment are not being used, hence why I had asked if we could switch the boxes. I agree with the fairly fast bit, as I had read that one post. We just took a picture of the box to show the progress of the chicks. I usually gently tap on the box and she leaves the nest and returns when I am done checking the chicks.

The oldest Chick is 10 days old and the other two are 8 and six day olds. The nesting box is in dire need of cleaning out. When the hen goes out of the box, will we be able to remove the chicks to a container while we clean the cage or do we just switch nesting boxes really quick. There are little white feces everywhere, it reminds me of pebbles,as I first thought they were and wondered how the hen came up with all those pebbles lol. We were leaning to switching nesting boxes and then cleaning out that one. Or will any kind of cleaning and the like cause her to abandon the Chicks.

I peeked in the nesting box a little while ago. The oldest chick looks like the skin is purplish, the other two are still pink. Just wondering if violet factor ones have purple skin, lol, don't know from Kramer, we got him feathered lol. It is warm to the touch, will try and get a picture next time hen is out feeding her face or stretching.

The last two eggs were clear when I candled them, so it looks like four chicks with 3 surviving. We may have another pair getting ready to nest, she is spending more and more time in the nesting box. We have plenty of Budgie Starter and egg and biscuit and hand rearing stuff in stock. I know of three places where I can get silverbeet, although we will have our own "budgie" garden starting soon. We rearranged the other cage and the male got out and I eventually got him after several passes over my head, I managed to corner him on a bookshelf, lol. So now it's watching the three grow up. Sometimes it looks like a rugby scrum in the nesting box lol. To be continued.............

Just a funny little thing that happened today. We put some millet outside for Kramer,so he could enjoy a treat. He loves Millet. Well, anyways, he stuck his head inside the nesting box and spotted the millet I had stuck in there for Hedwig. He proceeded to climb into the nesting box and Hedwig did a low squawking sound. He went back out, then he proceeded to climb back in. She screeched at him as loud as she could, I am guessing the scuffling sound was him trying to turn around, cause he could not get out of the nesting box fast enough, lol. I checked inside when she came out to stretch and be fed, and the chicks were all okay. He must have learned his lesson, because he hasn't gone back in since. We might have another pair going to nest. They were going to town in the cage. Keeping an eye on them, she keeps going into the nesting box. She won't even let him in at all. Ollie tried to sneak into it while she was preening, but she spotted him and chased him away.

sorry to hear that Kaz, I was barracking for the little chick. .
  18. Thanks Kaz, We'll try to get one tomorrow. I was thinking greywing myself. Whatever she is, she's adorable. she is the hardest biting hen we've got, and give her enough time, an accomplished escape artist as well, lol.
  19. This is a picture of one of our hens with Jimmy. We already found out what Jimmy was. We figured while we had natural light available, we would take a picture of her and post it here. We purchased her around February. LouLou says it's a cinnamon, but I am not so sure. Other Budgies we have have darker wings though. She actually sat still for this picture, usually she spots camera. she thinks it's exercise time lol.

Here is a picture of three. We think it looks like one egg is starting to hatch. It's scheduled to hatch in the early evening today anyways. The oldest one's eyes are almost open. sorry about the blur, but as you can see by the blur, the one kept rolling around lol. Will update with more, when the other two hatch. . Funny thing is when Kramer saw the camera it was almost as if he was trying to pose for it. Standing up straight and proud.

Is it okay to place a swag of millet in the box for the hen? He feeds her, but I figure the millet will help her as well. We have veggies, egg and biscuit and seed in the cage, from what he eats. Just curious about the millet, I know someone said about for the chicks when they are older. I figure she would just throw it out if she didn't want it,lol. She is a sure bet for cleaning house, lol esp right before she started to lay. The oldest chick is four days old.

We're quite new to all this. We originally only wanted Kramer to have a mate, and then things got out of control, lol. I'll have to go back to Ken Yorke's variety bible and try to ID stormie or when I get the chance get a good picture and put her on here and get a mutation ID. We have one hen depends on how the light is hitting her, she appears to be grey, but when light hits her, she shows violet. She's named Willow. We are guilty of robbing Buffy the Vampire slayer for names. Darrell for the longest time, was thought a male, until we looked it up and I saw that hen in the Pet shop. He is the only recessive pied we have. We have alot to learn about the Genetics and the like. We currently are in the process of making up a care sheet for the new Budgies, as we have several people state they want one. We are doing it in the first person point of view. Like it is the Budgie telling what it needs to be happy and healthy. Once we get all the birds Identified as to mutations and variations. Then we will sit down and look at what we have in pairings. After this clutch, we plan on giving both Kramer and Hedwig a years rest. But we do have 13 others to choose from. We don't plan on selling any to the petshops, as they don't really care about them, they just look to make money from them. Sorry about the book here, lol. I got carried away.

Beautiful Birds GB. We are guilty of window shopping for Budgies, okay so it winds up a purchase. We currently have a pair of Budgies raising young, and we are anxious to see what the out come is, Kramer is single factor violet, as his father was violet and his mother a white, I am assuming double spangle. We got very lucky in getting Kramer, 15 bucks for a visual violet, not a bad purchase. The pet budgies we get bring us so much pleasure, and we are always on the lookout for unique variations. We just go in to the shop and if there is one that grabs us, we either buy it then or ask the guy to hold it till we can purchase it. Guess that is how we got to 15 Budgies lol. We finally found out our Danish recessive Pied is a He. I walked into the pet shop to grab some hand rearing formula and saw one about the same size as Darrell and I talked to it, when it turned around I saw the beak was brown. We haven't decided on what to pair Darrell with, I guess whatever hen we see that grabs our attention. I would not trade the 15 Budgies we have right now for anything, they all have their unique personalities.

I just checked the nesting box while the hen was out. Number 4 has hatched. According to my calculations, it was not supposed to hatch until tomorrow night. I thought they were supposed to hatch two days appart, the eggs were laid two days apart. We have Budgie starter being sent to us ASAP, and they absolutely are devouring the silverbeet, how often can we give it to the budgies as they all went nuts over the stuff. The one budgie seemed to hype out on the stuff. Most of the fights were between couples not wanting to share, we wound up putting in more to cover the squabbling. the second born dwarfs the other two, I checked to make sure it did not roll over onto the other two chicks. To be continued............... :glare:
