  1. Welcome clearwing :what: I didn't understand all that you said about tail quill colours up above (haven't done the budgie thing for very long) so could you possibly take a look at my question regarding one of my birds? It generated quite a bit of fun along the way with two sparring camps You can read it here Also, this next picture is a new bird I got yesterday...10 weeks old. The picture doesn't show the true colours (sorry, it's winter here so need a flash)...very pale yellow face and pale yellow sporadically on the body, pale powder blue where you see blue. obviously a pied....but it's the wings I'm interested...such a pale grey...greywing, clearwing or something else. As you can see, I'm still learning and have a long way to go! My new bird Unfortunately, the place I got this bird clips all their wings so hope that doesn't make it too much harder to tell.
  2. i think what you call lucerne is what we call alfalfa. I imagine our timothy hay may be the same as your grass hay. Did you find they actually ate it or just sort of chewed on it?
  3. SEAWEED!!!!!!!!!!!! :what: :laughter: :laughter: That's so funny! Well, it was with you in mind KAZ that I asked this question since I remembered reading about your guinea pig pellets and also I remembered about other posts about Mr Pancakes the rabbit who lives in the bottom of Libby's aviary. We used to have guinea pigs and they ate tons of timothy hay. In fact, it's an essential part of their diet. Timothy hay is the standard hay fed to horses and cattle her in North America. It is very dry so very resistant to moulding. The bag I bought for the hamster is huge so just wondered about sharing it with the budgies...especially the nutty one nesting on the cage floor...now sitting on 7 eggs with some difficulty. I might try a handfull at the bottom and see if it piques their curiosity.
  4. Had to buy a bag for my daughter's hamster so got to wondering if any of you make this aailable to your birds too. Thought they might like to chew it and it might offer some nutrients too. Opinions?
  5. WHAT!!! hehe... they sound really pretty!!! LOVE the names too... Your nutty hen is still at it. I give her points for comitment and do hope they hatch. Right after I typed this she laid #7! :fear
  6. I think it's so special how you all share your vast knowledge so generously with us relative newbies...a heartfelt thanks to you all...from me! :emoticon112:
  7. I don't have any pictures yet but they are soooooooooo pretty. A 5 month old light green spangle...my first spangle !!!!! I'm so excited :emoticon112: She is such a beautiful green...almost neon lime! The other is a 10 week old little pied...a hen too I think. She is all very pale yellow and powder blue. Their names are Jazz and Blues respectively. Meanwhile, my nutty hen with the eggs on the cage floor is now trying to sit on 6 eggs! She has now let me take the concave insert from the nest box and lay it on the floor in "her corner" under the seed cup and I have gently placed her eggs in the hollow. She does seem to find this easier to arrnge the eggs under her. On the flat floor she'd try tucking them under her but they'd roll out the other side. No idea if any will hatch and I'e lost the light I use to candle eggs with so we'll just have to wait and see
  8. Nubbly is a budgerigar JUDGE .......does that help ?? Actually Yes! Can't get more expert than that! :hb: okay nubbly...what makes you say one from the other?

    Beautiful!
  11. okay...so what we have here is a stalemate between the experts  Everybody weigh in... Heavily marked light green clearwing OR Light green greywing Hopefully we'll reach a consensus :hb: because I'd really like to refer to him as "my cute little light green (insert agreed upon mutation)" and not "hey you light green whatever you are" :hb: In the event of a tie within this australian forum, I'll have to find a forum from another country and poll them too!!!! hahahahaha
  12. GB, when I was studying cheek patches, I noticed that the standard for clearwing stated "bright violet" and the one for greywing was "pale violet". So I came to the conclusion that the clearwing gene affected the cheek patch the same way it affects the body color. However, in the above pictures, a flash was used, and I cannot tell what shade of violet the cheek patch is. (It looks pretty bright.) DF said cheek patch was a very faint grey, which would indicate grey factor, but bird doesn't appear grey-green. So maybe a picture without flash would help us see the cheek patch, but I think Dean is probably right anyway. His throat spots are very faint grey and his tail is soft grey. Cheek patches are a lighter blue/violet than on any of the blues I have. Unfortunately, it's winter here so a picture without flash would probably be too dark to see anything.
  13. Thanks Dean_NZ He seems very healthy, very active, chatters up a storm, eating well so will probably leave for now but closely monitor. So, for the greens...does the correct description of his mutation include anything about type 1 or 2 , is he YF or GF and would it include this? or is he just light green greywing. Sorry for all the questions but I'm just trying to record the info about my birds as acurately as I can.
  14. Thanks Dave. She is young...about 11-12 weeks I think. She actually doesn't have any blue ...that must just be poor lighting or my poor photography But that's very interesting about her being a creamino...thanks for explaining that to me. Guess Alphie will hae to become allison eh? LOL
  15. Adorable! How old is he?
  16. This the one I've used and had good results with. It's a Hagen Vision.
  17. I'm of the impression that lutino chicks with pink eyes won't have the same cere colouring as other budgies for sexing. Is this correct? If so, how do I tell the sex? This is Alphie: http://i49.tinypic.com/10rs5y0.jpg
  18. This is really two questions about 1 bird. He is about 3 years old and his cere used to be brilliant blue....and now it is brown...what is causing this and why? And, can you help me figure out his mutation? Some of the pictures show some blue in him...this is just faulty lighting...he has no blue whatsoever...he is only goldy yellow, green and grey. Here are some pictures. I just noticed too that the spots below his cheek patches are a very faint grey too. His flight feathers and his tailfeathers are all a soft grey with a hint or tan sorta. Excuse the hackjob on his wings...the people I got him from were clippers and poor ones at that. Anyway...over to you real experts http://i49.tinypic.com/2hfmn9i.jpg http://i48.tinypic.com/wlwt45.jpg http://i48.tinypic.com/2lkwdic.jpg http://i46.tinypic.com/213hkkn.jpg http://i45.tinypic.com/xf4wtl.jpg http://i46.tinypic.com/v4xpo7.jpg I think I sized them alright....it's not my forte.

    Wonderful! Congrats
  21. Congratulations! Little Harrison is adorable...you must be very proud  Sounds like you have a lovely family Splat and as others have commented, it really is nice to be able to put a face to the posts
  22. Hmmm...the reason for buying two HUGE cages was to get rid of the zillion cages I had previously so I'm hoping they all find a way to work it out. Sometimes they're worse than my kids
  23. HAHAHAHA...That is so cool to keep a rabbit in the aviary...but doesn't he get covered in bird poop? Well, a live rabbit isn't possible and I don't see any signs of the hen getting upset...although I'm not sure I'd know what that looks like! The dynamic in that particular cage has gone all wonky anyway...his parents are also in there along with two other males. His father has seemingly shunned his mother for the attentions of one of the other males and she is terribly jealous. It's a bit like watching a rather sordid soap opera! LOLOLOLOLOLOL
  24. Well, never thought I'd have to ask a question like this, but how do you get a bird to leave his sister alone (that's the part that bothers me most) and take an interest in a "scape bunny"? Do you just have Mr Pancakes hanging in the cage? I'm assuming Mr Pancakes (LOVE that name, By The Way) is a stuffed toy?
  25. I think I'm mostly worried about it traumatizing the 13 week old female chicks in the same cage! I was going to say BOYS!!! They're the same in all species!!! I to wouldn't be too worried. He'll soon figure out what it's for... LOL..he seems to have figured that out already! Now I know why it's called "The birds and the bees"
