  1. He is trying to "get busy" with anything that stands still long enough!! All my other chicks are females and don't seem quite so driven.
  2. I think the picture is a bit misleading. In real life he has no blue at all. What shows as blue in the picture is actually olive too.
  3. I was going to ask this same question today so I am now eagerly awaiting replies to your excellent post One day, I'd like to build an adition to my home that would include an indoor atrium for my budgies planted exclusively with safe plant species native to australia.
  4. In this first photo the hen on the right is the mother (Elly) and we've determined in another thread that she is probably a mauve. The cock is the yellow dom pied. The second picture of him is much better.
  5. Thanks so much Kaz...you have really put my mind at ease. They are the only birds in that cage and it isn't a grate on the cage floor. She has tucked herself right into a corner right under the lowest seed cup...a DIY nestbox for her I guess. They are in the spare bedroom and no draughts and I am checking on them many times a day.
  6. I think the male would be called a yellow faced olive green dom pied (yellow face, patches of olive green on body, definately dominant pied) and the female is a normal mauve (I think). What appearance can I expect in their chicks?
  7. I have one pair of budgies who have decided to nest on the cage floor. As soon as I realized she had layed an egg I put up a nest box and while she did show an interest in the box, she refuses to lay her eggs it. She laid a second egg on the cage floor so I moved them both to he box hoping she'd get the idea to raise her family inside it but instead she laid egg #3 on the cage floor and ignored the first two. So I decided to trust her instinct and I moved the first two back down to her corner on the floor. Next time I checked, she had destroyed egg 2 and egg 3 and was sitting on the first egg. Since then she has layed 2 more eggs and is sitting on the three of them. Her mate isn't as attentive as some other males I've seen but I think he's getting it right now. Seems she's had to teach him what to do. What are the chances of successful hatching on the cage floor? Will the unfeathered chicks be warm enough even if they do hatch? If any do hatch, should I move them up to the box at that point or leave them alone? I don't have any others to foster them to. Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.
  8. She is absolutely gorgeous! You must be thrilled with her...I know I would be!
  9. I agree...I think you have it right. Cute chicks
  10. Well, from all your replies and the picture of the mauve hen, I think that is exactly what Snap & Crackle are. I have finally managed to get a half decent picture. This is one of them with their older sky blue sister This is their mother : and this is both parents: and this is the other adult hen that is the same slate grey blue as Snap and Crackle shown here with another sky blue
  11. Such a cute video! Your Qwerty looks just like my Romeo It's cold here but so far we've only had one skiff of snow so far...too bad because I love snow. I'm on the southern tip of Vancouver Island so it stays very mild here. What part of Oregon are you in?
  12. I loved the music put to that adorable budgie video...I didn't think Puck was going to get back in ! Very cute...thanks for posting it
  13. Yes...pictures woul help immensely but I cannot seem to get any that reflect the true colours...both types end up being somewhere in the middle - it's frustrating. I did see a picture of a similar shade budgie on the internet that said it was mauve so maybe that's what mine are. If anyone has a mauve budgie I'd like to see your pics if possible. I will keep trying with my own camera and see if I can get a good snap.
  14. I have a pair of gorgeous cobalts - the hen is an opaline cobalt and the cock is a normal cobalt. They are both the same very intense and very beautiful blue colour. They have had two clutches, the first giving rise to only one chick ( a very pretty normal sky blue hen) and the second clutch gave us three chicks. Amongst those three chicks, one is a rec pied cobalt hen (I think) and the other two are both normal cobalts (one hen and one cock - I think). Anyway, the normal cobalt chicks are such a different blue from their parents...I would actually describe it as a dull slate blue..sort of a greyish blue...dull and definately not pretty. I also have another adult cobalt hen that is this same dull grey-blue cobalt. If they are all cobalt, why are some so vibrant and others so dull looking? Is there a differnt cobalt mutation? If so, what could they be?
  15. No expert here but I know of a budgie who exhibited similar difficulties and it turned out to be a stroke.
  16. Hi Radien and welcome to this forum. I'm relatively new to it also, having only got re-involved with birds over the last year or so. The folks on here are wonderful and offer us newbies a wealth of information which they generously share. One thought I had regarding the colour of your bird based upon the things you've said and not so much the pictures is could your adorable Qwerty be a normal sky violet? I have a cock bird who is a sky violet and at this time of year (I live north of you in BC, Canada) it is almost impossible to tell him from my normal cobalt cock and trying to capture those flecks of violet on a camera at this time of year is next to impossible. As your bird gets older it might be easier to see too. Glad that your bird is such a curious one...they are the most fun to watch.
  17. Julliet, one of my hens, keeps bobbing side to side and doing quick little side steps along the perch with each bob. She leans down really low and travels about 2 inches in either direction. She looks cute when she does this...a little like she's dancing...but I thought I should ask you more experienced budgie folks if I need to be concerned about anything. Also, the same hen is being quite aggresive with two of her last set of chicks (hatched in the first few days of October) Why would she start doing this? They have plenty of room as their cages are HUGE. Thanks in advance...you all give such great advice
  18. One of my hens is laying but not in the box. Instead, she is laying them on the cage floor and then she spends most of her time nestled in the corner of the cage under the seed cup. She wasn't sitting on the egg on the floor so I put up the breeding box and moved the two egs into it. I would imagine the first two won't be viable even if they are fertile as they haven't been kept warm but I'm hoping that if she lays any more that she'll do it in the box. I was thinking that I might try to incubate any future eggs myself but have no idea how to do that. What do I need and how do I go about this? Any help would be appreciated. I hadn't actually planned on breeding any more pairs until the spring but these two obviously had other ideas! Who knows, they may not even e fertile (too soon to tell) but I'd hate to just let them perish just because their mama bird is clueless.
  19. Fascinating. I'm so glad you now have a definitive diagnosis. The vet didn't happen to say what type of Trichomonas it was, did he? I'm a microbiologist and specialize in parasitology so I find this very interesting.
  20. I have found a very large cage for sale ...one that could easily house all of my 13 budgies. My dilemma is that the bar spacing on the cage is 3/4 of an inch. I've always read that budgie cages should have 1/2 inch spacing. Do you think 3/4 would be unsafe for my birds??? I really want to get away from having 5 cages all over my house!!!!! I have to decide by tomorrow :rip:
  21. Hmmmm...he has a yello face so I assumed he was a yf...wow, I have so much to learn...LOL
  22. A rec pied skyblue hen (her parents are opaline cobalt hen and normal cobalt cock) paired with a yf olive green dom pied cock...no idea about his parentage. Or the same hen as above (rec pied sky) with a normal sky violet cock? Or a normal sky blue hen with a yf sky blue dom pied cock?
  23. I only have thirteen birds so they are all named : Romeo, Julliet, Maxi, Snap, Crackle, Pop, Oliver, Skye, Splash,Piper, Sunshine, Elly and Bubbles. I also have a cocktiel named Moe. I cannot imagine naming all the birds in a large aiary. I tend to get my kids named mixed up but not the birds ..LOL!
  24. Oh my! I am SO there....and even more pictures up at work than of the kids "shakes head" 162. When you treat yourself to an afternoon at the spa and the girl doing your pedicure has many budgies also and you feel you've met a kindred spirit.
