  1. ...or is it too eary to tell? I think they are females Also, they are a darker more muted blue than their parents..any comments about their genetic identity? Mother is an opaline coblt and father is a normal cobalt. This is Snap & Crackle http://i960.photobucket.com/albums/ae81/md...enesttodaay.jpg And now Pop is starting ti finally feather up a bit http://i960.photobucket.com/albums/ae81/md...herfeathers.jpg Oh my! Help me!!!!! I resized these pictures on photobucket and they STILL posted s huge ones on here...sorry but now I have no idea what I did wrong
  2. A friend called me tonight as she knows someone whose budgie has had a stroke (diagnosed by the vet) and while I'm not sure how bad it's symptoms are she wondered what sort of recovery budgies have if any? Has anyone had any experience with this sort of thing??? I'd wonder what sort of clues to look for in case this ever happens to one of my own birds.
  3. A cow...but you didn't answer mine GB ! :hooray:
  4. Nope :hooray:
  5. Great news! Glad they are okay
  6. WOW Nubbly...what a great visual explaination...really helps in understanding this. I had no idea the size difference was so marked. Those show birds are monsters aren't they??? All the more to love!
  7. I took some pictures of the three chicks todaay and while Pop continues to be energetic and strong she's still quite a bit smaller. (I am of the impression all three chicks are females but we'll see ) But one nice thing I noticed was Pop finally starting to feather up a bit better...not quite so pink and bald! I figure that must be a good sign Snap and Crackle are doing well and I found Snap trying to get out of the nest today...she ended up hanging by one leg from the post outside the box....but a quick boost up the birdie bum and she was back were she belongs! Thought I'd post the new pics so you have a bit of an update. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed thaat Pop catches up as I think she'll be a lovely bird...my only rec pied so far. So...here they are with my daughter and her friend..Snap, Crackle and Pop @ 22, 24 and 26 days old. http://i960.photobucket.com/albums/ae81/md...ds/DSCN1094.jpg http://i960.photobucket.com/albums/ae81/md...ds/DSCN1095.jpg http://i960.photobucket.com/albums/ae81/md...ds/DSCN1096.jpg http://i960.photobucket.com/albums/ae81/md...ds/DSCN1097.jpg http://i960.photobucket.com/albums/ae81/md...ds/DSCN1102.jpg http://i960.photobucket.com/albums/ae81/md...ds/DSCN1103.jpg photo sizes please edit photos before submitting to your post as per forum rules ...to sizes 480 by 640 MAXIMUM
  8. Thanks Elly...she's removed her post where she was looking for a new home so perhaps she's resolved her situation.
  9. Hmmm.. I had queried male in the other post but now I thik SHE is a lovely bird.
  10. What a gorgeous bird!!!! Absolutely lovely colouring I'm still trying very hard to wrap my head around the mutations/colourings so here's my very uneducated guess...yellowfaced cobalt dominant pied spangle....but lets see wht the experts say..hahahaha....an ?male?
  11. The horses name was Friday! What do you get if you cross a parrot with a centipede?
  12. I took in three abandoned budgies today...thought to be approx 2 years old and all raised and housed together for that time. Two females and a male. The two females keep scrapping - like beak wrestling..apparently they've always one this???? Is there a way to train them to stop this behaviour? The three of them are in a hge cage so it isn't a territorial thing. My eventual goal is to have them all in one large aviary but this is going to cause some problems. Poor things are a bit of a mess right now as someone has done a real hackjob on the wings of one in particular. Could it be that they are being tempermental due to being not well cared for and then abandoned?
  13. It's not a terribly good picture of them..evening and I had to use a flash but can you tell me what the yellow male pied would be called? The other two are pretty straightforward I think..a normal skyblue hen (although her colouring is a really nice sort of electric blue in the daylight) and the other is a normal ?cobalt hen but in the daylight she is looks more grey/mauve/blue than cobalt..although with the flash she ended up looking very blue...weird. She's so grey the kids have named her Elly which is short for elephant in this case because they're grey. They are a bit scraggy looking but they came to me as abandoned birds needing a home. Unfortunately, whoever decided they didn't want them anymore did a real hack job on Elly's wings...they're a mess. Poor thing. Sunshine http://i960.photobucket.com/albums/ae81/md...ds/DSCN1092.jpg L->R Bubbles, Sunshine and Elly http://i960.photobucket.com/albums/ae81/md...ds/DSCN1085.jpg Thanks for the help
  14. Excellent idea Elly...I'll write to her and see if she'll post here. I was hoping some of you very experienced folks could offer some reasons for wet droppings that wouldn't necessarily be fatal so she might not feel so sad and bleak about the bird's prospects.
  15. Gorgeous bird with lovely colouration!
  16. Thankfully, all my lovely birds are happy and healthy but someone I know is getting very upset about the fact that her bird is having very wet droppings to the point where she feels she needs to rehome the bird with someone who can afford hefty vet bills as she is no longer in a position to do so. Please see http://www.usedvictoria.com/classified-ad/10420472 and you can't help but feel the anguish she is suffering. She is a lovely person who cares very deeply about her birds and would do whatever she thought was the best thing for them. If I could put her mind at ease in any way I would love to be able to do so. You all know so much about our feathered friends and sometimes the benefit of experience can speak volumes. I think she is expecting the worst outcome for her bird if she keeps him but maybe it doesn't have to be that way. I would be happy to pass along any comments any of you may hae for her. Thanks so much....guess we really do flock together, huh??
  17. okay...then I'm still not getting it The dark in his feathers is at the edge of each feather and lighter in the middle....goodness, I'm sorry for being so dense :fingerscrossed:
  18. The newest little man in our growing family :wine http://i960.photobucket.com/albums/ae81/md...ds/DSCN1084.jpg http://i960.photobucket.com/albums/ae81/md...ds/DSCN1083.jpg http://i960.photobucket.com/albums/ae81/md...ds/DSCN1081.jpg http://i960.photobucket.com/albums/ae81/md...ds/DSCN1080.jpg YF skyblue dom pied ?spangle? or not spangle? Interestingly enough, he's the only bird of 9 that piques the curiosity of the cat. He sings beautifully
  19. No, I think size is the only thing I noticed about it physically....although it it is always mucky looking as though it smeared food all over itself...sort of matted looking. I's feathers are quite a bit sparser than the other two.
  20. That's why I'm glad I found this forum  Do you have any other aliases I should know about? LOL
  21. WOW...I read your answers on there all the time....yours are the only ones worth reading! LOL I'm always very much in awe of how much you know! I did post this same question on there too hoping to get an answer from Moggie....and it seems I did, but over here! LOL Your comment about the feather development is spot on....this chick looks sparse and bedraggled compared with the other two who are looking more and more like adults every day. I'm checking to make sure the parents are feeding it well and it appears they are and the older two feed the little one also. One big happy family!
  22. I have three chicks that are about 19, 21 and 23 ddays old. The youngest one is sooooo much smaller than the other two who are starting to look less "chick-like" every day. He seems energetic enough and the parents have been very good with them all. Can you have a "runt" with chicks? He doesn't seem to be growing at the same pace as the other two. Advice?
  23. Added one to the flock today and WOW he's loud....in a pretty sounding way though...hahaha. He gets going with such gusto and he gets the other ones all going too. He's in quarantine but the others can still hear him and once he gets them all singing it's almost deafening! I had to turn the TV up to hear it over them...makes my house sound a bit like a jungle. Freaked the cat out so much she kind of flattened herself to the carpet, kept her tail down and skulked to the front door to go out...LOL
  24. Aaaawe...thanks so much everyone...Now I get it! Armed with my new information I've taken a look at all my birds and I think the new fellow I got today might be a spangle which would make him a yellow faced sky blue dominant pied spangle. I'll ry to get a good picture of him this week (I had posted a picture that was from his previous home a few days ago and found out all the other stuff). Thanks again!
  25. I think I finally have my head wrapped around pieds (except I still don't know how you tell a rec from a dom...but that'll come) but I don't even know what you folks mean when you talk about a bird being a spangle. Other than that I'd say I've learned a tremendous amount from this group....enough to at least throw enough words around to fake an intelligent conversation about budgies (as long as the other person knew NOTHING about birds...LOLOL)
