Good Morning Australia!
And I'm not invited???? hehehehe

Hobby Or Business?
I guess by "business" I meant more that any money made might make the cost of care self supporting. I can't even imagine how much it must cost to properly care for 200-300 birds like some of you have. I'd love to have many birds eventually but would need to find a way to fund it adequately.

Hobby Or Business?
Is it a hobby or a business for you? Can budgies become a good livelihood? If so, how?

Broken Beak After Attack From Hen
Sunshine finally let me take a look at his beak more closely and the tip is broken off and the side where Elly attacked him looks damaged too. He still seams to be ble to eat fine and is certainly looking better than he did in the first couple of days after she did this. Will his beak grow back and be normal again? Poor guy...I feel so bad for him.

Good Morning Australia!
If I have the time difference figured out correctly, I think it's fairly early on Sunday morning for you in Australia...so "Good Morning" Where I live, it's lunchtime the day before and I'm sitting here with a bowl of broccoli & cheese soup, a huge mug of tea and I'm STILL freezing! Wish it was summer here too! The bird room is warmer so I might go hang with the birdies! What excitement do you have planned for today?

Look What Happened
Looks great! I've always wanted to do the whole main floor in tile but we compromised and went with laminate and some tile ...at least that way I get rid of the carpet!

The Challenge

Finnie's Flock
Finnie your birds are so gorgeous  And I love the names too. The picture looking into the cage that looks quite long...what are the dimensions? It looks like a great cage! having a "bird room" is great isn't it? I've sort of taken over my oldest son's bedroom since he moved out for my bird room but he's building me a bird aviary shaped like a six sided gazebo for out on our deck instead, heated of course Guess he didn't want them in his old room

Defields Breeding Journal For 2010
Introducing Elly & Sunshine's chicks!!! Chick #1 (who pertetually stares at me...a bit like a puppy!) Chick #2 Chick #3 Chick #4 Mom (Elly) - photo doesn't show her true colour...she's defiantely a real slatey blue and typical mottled look that mauves get. And some group shots :budgiedance: Dad (Sunshine) - ignore the blue look under his tail...all his patches are olive. Any comments re: mutation, sex etc are appreciated. The pins on the oldest chick shine like silver...it's really pretty but didn't show up in the pictures.

Could They Be Greys From This Pair?
defieldsfamily replied to defieldsfamily's post in a topic in Budgie Mutations, Varieties and GeneticsIs the cock actually olive or might he be grey green ? Quite some time ago I posted pictures of the cock and the general consensus was olive.

Could They Be Greys From This Pair?
They're all asleep right now so can't go take any pictures but as the four chicks start to feather up from my olive green dom pied cock and mauve hen two of them look like they might be normal greys, the third seems to have a hint of blue and the tiniest is looking very white all over. Does this sound possible? Is it possible to deduce what the parents are split to from these results?

For Finnie
Now I can just imagine all the BBC folks out there squinting at their screens

Df Chicks
defieldsfamily replied to defieldsfamily's post in a topic in Budgie Mutations, Varieties and GeneticsI think that's what I mean ...I'm a budgie mutation newbie, remember??? Does it mean something different the other ways?

For Finnie
I love the picture of your dog in your signature but it took me a week (or more) of staring at the picture trying to figure out where the dog's face was For some reason, I just couldn't get my eyes oriented the right way until tonight...before it looked like a big cat face with a goofy grin, long ears and glasses !!!! Once I figured out which way the dog was facing I got it figured out    but it STILL looks like he/she is wearing glasses!

Ratzy's Breeding Journal
I am so curious as to how you are set up there with your birds such that you can see into the nestbox so often and she can't see you...can you show us some pictures? Congrats on your eggs

Breeding Age
Having read another topic tonight it got me wondering what the maximum reccommended age is for breeding budgies. Mine are still all quite young but I wouldn't want to endanger any of them by breeding them at the wrong age. Do males have a maximum too or just females?

Egg Laying
I'm glad Piper did better with the second egg and that the vet feels she is okay. So nice to have a vet who wants updates like that.....he/she sounds very compassionate. PS...nice to see another Canadian on this forum! from the west coast.

Df Chicks
Normal mauve hen and olive green dom pied cock, no idea what either might be split to. I think this means that the chicks would all be DF (right?) but what exactly does that mean in terms of what types of chicks I might see?

Why Would These Chicks Be So Much Bigger?
I have 9 or 10 chicks all under a year and most are similar in size but the two most recent ones I bought from a local breeder are absolutely HUGE in comparison to all of the others. They hatched sometime in November so at most they are 12-13 weeks old. They have the gorgeous big baby eyes still and are really pretty birds both violet, one spangle and the other opaline and I had originally thought both were boys (the breeder thought the same but the change in their cere's has been very remarkable. What would account for such a size variation? I'd even go so far as to say they are close to twice the size of two others I have that are about the same age. They don't look like show budgies ...they're just big They are both very gentle birds too and are getting along very well with the other birds since coming out of quarantine.

Defields Breeding Journal For 2010
You dont think you are going to get away with not posting new pikkies are you come on...you can do it PS she will be fine feeding the babies....make sure plenty of easy food for her in the nestbox ( seed ) and soft food real close to the nestbox. Thanks KAZ...I have been feeding her on the cage floor as this is where she chose to lay her eggs. Everything within reach for her as the male has been a virtually useless partner in this whole process. But then again, if somebody kept pecking me in the head I'd probably opt out too! I'll try to get some pictures over the next couple of days. I sure hope most of the babies turn out to be males...I seem to have ended up with an abundance of hens in my flock.

How Many Budgies Would You Put In A Cage Of This Size?
I'm so glad you said that as I was hoping to put ten in each one just for a couple of months! You've made my day
