Also if your bottles are in sunlight they will encourage a green film in them. I use sipper bottles similar to your picture but have never had a problem with them, I use a bottle brush once a week and rinse them in a bleach solution (rubber stoppers as well) use fresh water to rinse, then fill them.
  2. I think by trying it at night you would end up with a "night fright" situation. Are you trying to catch them in the tall cage in your first picture? If so can you remove perch's etc, so they can't land, maybe you can catch them when they land on sides of cage. Using a small net. If you are planning to sell any future chicks, I'd keep them in a smaller breeding cage until they are ready to sell, about 6-8 weeks or so.
  3. Do the pics have to be our own birds? I mean, we can't add pics from the i.net etc can we?
  4. I'm not up with mutations etc. If you go to F.A.Q. under BUDGIE MUTATIONS it gives you all the details of each mutations. Hope this helps until someone "in the know" can advise.
  5. Can't really picture your set up, chick should be fully feathered and ready to leave nest box "tent" 4-5 weeks old. If he is feathered he will find his way out to the cage with Mum & Dad.
  6. I think at 23 days the hand reared chick should nearly be cracking seed for itself so you won't have to help feed it for long, if at all. Check with her to see what she has been feeding it. She may even let you have the food she has been using, also could give you a crash course on feeding, if the lady is willing. After you get both birds you should still quarantine them to see all is well with them, then they should be fine in the same cage as they are both babies.

Chicks looking lovely Nadene. I've sold a lot of my chicks this time also, nearly all males AGAIN. Where are the hens??? I've currently got 5 chicks from 7 eggs. another nest of 7 eggs. one with 2, so far and just paired up a forth pair. Hope I get some hens out of this lot. l.o.l.

Hi Jan, welcome to the b.b.c. lots of help on here.
  9. Hi glad you like it, I must confess it was a complete fluke !! If I had TRIED to get a shot like that it would not have worked. l.o.l.
  10. If she kicked her last clutch out maybe they weren't fertile. If she has a new clutch of eggs, keep an eye on whether she is incubating them or not. Do you have another hen you can foster the eggs with if she doesn't sit? The foster hen would have to have eggs as well.
  11. I hope this works. It may be wrong sizing. Re March:
  12. Try soaking the toe in warm soapy water until the ball softens a little then if you gently squeeze the lump it should crack enough to remove it. Don't pull it off if it resists, (soak a bit longer) or you could remove the nail, even the toe in chicks.
  13. Hi Jen, I think if he was ill it would have advanced more in this time frame. He could have been stressed by the other bird. I'd do what Jenny advised and keep an eye on him to see if he picks up weight wise, if he's wormed, not fluffed up or lethargic, he should be okay. Just to add my birds seem to eat a lot more in colder weather also, once he has no competition for food he may slow down on his food intake. Good luck with him he's lovely. Let us know how he goes.
  14. Hi Mike, do your birds have lice or mites? If not I don't think I'd spray them at all, until you see signs of either on your birds. If you do have an infestation of them your chicks would pick them up from parents anyway, in that case I'd spray parents away from chicks seed etc. spray chicks after they feather up if they show signs of either at that time. Red mites e.g will infest perch's nest box's etc and are hard to get rid of. There would be info on them in F.A.Q section to read up on.
  15. Hi, maybe if it's left hanging in upright position, so it has no bottom, it would be okay. They may still be able to climb through it but not be able to nest in it.
  16. Well I'm no expert but I'd say (as an uneducated guess) Rec. clear flight pied spangle, possibly opaline, also under 3 mths. Wait for the experts to let you know.
  17. Hi Tracy, It's not a one time thing to get them to try new things, you have to keep trying them, mine are just getting interested in Broccoli after trying for 2 weeks on a daily basis. Actually it's easier in the aviary, (monkey see -monkey do), it only takes one to try and then others follow. Just keep trying a little bit each time, less waste that way, until he tries it.
  18. Welcome, I think I answered another post from you about baby sleeping etc. as you have explained more here I'd say you are doing okay. as each pair sound like they have been separated, you should have no problems raising the chick. Is the chick in a nest box? where was the egg laid and hatched? Mum and Dad will feed it until it's about 4 weeks old when it will start to crack seed on it's own.
  19. Looks great, are you planning to breed them or just leave it as is? If you ARE NOT planning on breeding, I would take the log out as they will use it for a nest or fight over it to nest in, if no other nest box's are provided.
  20. Hi Coral4, You say you have a tiny peep at Mum & Dad, did you breed this baby yourself? If it's in a nest box with Mum & Dad it won't be ready to come out of nest box into cage until about 4 weeks old when it is fully feathered and starting to crack seed on it's own Dad & Mum will probably still feed it for a few days after that. As long as it's growing and looking healthy it sounds okay,it will sleep a lot if it's a baby, can you tell us what your cage set up is like so we can help further. Or even add a picture or 2 so we can see your set up.
  21. No1, really cute.
  22. Hi Phoebes, Glad you read through this topic and took the given advice to heart. Seeing the results of a happy pair in a separate cage is heaps better than seeing dead or maimed chicks and eggs. etc. Glad your breeding efforts were successful.
  23. Hi, photobucket is a challenge at times. If you have picture up you want to post. 1. click on img, which will hi. light. 2. then right click/copy (I think it says copied). 3. Have bbc open then paste to bbc. hope this helps.
