  1. most hens chew at the hole to the nesting box and most pet store brought ones at chipboard. Should be okay, if you remove it you would need to replace it with another (made of ply wood is good) and she will have to start again to accept it as her box.
  2. Aww so cute. You have a little girl there. A green dominant pied hen.
  3. sounds like you have a great grip on the genetics of budgies already. All your working out with percentages and such is correct. okay this does now sound like your are talking about green series recessive pied birds. These are simply classed green recessive pied. No need to said yellow face or not since all green birds have a yellowface. Green can carry a yellowface gene same as they can carry the blue gene. This is my green recessive pied male (Poka)
  4. HUGS armchairangel You know Baby so well I'm sure she will tell you when and if she is ready.
  5. Yes the FAQ has some good information with the biting. I would suggest that is in case it as out of fear with your hand. Take it slow with your new little one it will take a while for the trust to build. and welcome to the site
  6. Well I give mine bottle brush branches and most natives and trees of the gum family are safe. It would have to be a largish tree (mature would be a better word ) and best in a pot for budgies usually strip trees bare so you would have to remove it once in a while so it can regrow.
  7. okay The behaviour has been given advise on how to stop or hopfully slow it down but this last post as at least infromed us on WHY it started. First off the large poops are a sign of eggs to come very soon from the next few days to about a week (depending on how long they have been happening) they are cause by her 'hold on' so to speak while in the nesting box. The behaviour has been cause by the addition of the box in the first place, budgies are normally fine together as mixed gender pair or flocks with there is no nesting site available. You stated you know that they shouldn't breed when so young so why did you add the box in the first place? They don't need it for sleeping and they don't have to get use to it before hand. It is called a NESTING BOX and it is used JUST for that reason and no other. I would expect you to find eggs even with the removal of the box since she has started her cycle already. So watch for any signs of straining or distress or spending a lot of time on the ground of the cage in case she has trouble with passing an egg which would require an avian vet attentions ASAP.
  8. If you post in the mutation area all your birds we can tell you what they are. Tommy is a dominant pied cobalt. Or maybe visual violet (Gypsy might be too) Smudges and Cloudy are both recessive pieds (good pairing with them two) Cloudy is a sky blue smudges is cobalt. If cloudy has brown markings then she is cinnamon as well.
  9. okay then Sunnie good to know Just checking. Then she must be a opaline with bad flecking to still have markings like that. (which I did wonder looking at the bit of wing I can see)

Welcome to the site Kate. I ditto all that Kaz said about asking for help and the love of pictures part Good luck with your eggs.
  11. Hi and welcome Harlequinlover, Yellowface is a great colour in budgies. It is a blue gene that only block some of the yellow from the feathers rather than the normal blue gene that block all. I'm not sure what you asking with yellow faced green series 2 but if you mean a normal green recessive pied then this pairing will not give you what you want. Green is dominant and a yellowface is not created with matching a green to a blue. What is the yellowface grey split too? You could get a yellowface blue from this pair if both are single factor greys. You woulds get more greys than blues and there is a chance of double factor greys. This could get the grey gene running wild in your flock becuase double factor greys will only have grey offsprings. But if your not worried then yes this pair could give you a Yellowface blue.
  12. HI Sunny welcome to the site. Your birds look great. I can't tell in the first shot which one is the hen and which is the male, but is the normal blue bird of age? There seems to be a lot of dark markings on the top of the head, which to me look like bars, this would mean the bird is still a baby (under 3 months) Is this correct or is it just from the darkness of the picture? Budgies should be at least 12 months before breeding.
  13. :budgiedance: And I wouldn't mind stealing some of your new blood Bea! Cage 1 has one bub being well looked after by mum. Cage 2 The tree bubs are doing well. The egg marked 7 is a few days late. I don't know why but I have a feeling the oldest is a spangle.
  14. So the vet didn't even start a broad antibiotics like Baytril? I would have thought that the treatment for Macbac wouldn't be harmful if it turned it it wasn't the issue. I hope all goes well, if he is looking for food on the ground then give him some there, sprinkle it about and add some millet they find that easy to eat.
  15. What are the parents? A DEC is the offspring of a dominant pied and a recessive pied.
  16. That's your answer
  17. :oliveb: I know I need some more birds of the show type to help me and the lines.
  18. okay then so it wouldn't be from other hens trying to take over the box.
  19. That's okay I would just adding the info so people would realise this applies to both sexes Also I move the other talk about the colour of the bird to Here
  20. I'd agree with Moody blue as a sky violet, I did wonder before but thought I would put forth the results as a cobalt. Not so sure with the pied (is his name Cobalt?)
  21. Great pictures Kaz. Red factor means they can be fed colouring food to enrich the colour in the feathers (red food turns them redder)
  22. I can't see why he can't have his shower as well, as long as it's 4 mins max . Bea great pictures again I love the ones where you can see the water rolling off them.
  23. sorry nope, unless the sire is split for opaline. Keep in mind the males will be split for this and if paired to an opaline hen will give more opalines.
  24. also what is your set up? colony for closed breeding?
  25. he is a silly boy, any better at the talking? And I've just realised all breeding pairs relate back to the one family line at the moment... man I need some new blood in my flock. I have Ringo and Poka back together (dominant pied to recessive pied) since they where seen mating in the aviary and she had a swollen vent. Silly hen dropped the egg out side of the nest box.
