Worked My Butt Off Today
It looks great! My husband is building me a new aviary (for the last 4 months!) I'll post the photos when completed. Hey, is that an old car steering wheel hanging up? If it is, what a great idea!

How To Read A Legring?
Yeah! We found one! Went shopping with a friend yesterday and she picked up a budgie with the same breeder code. I'll contact the Sale club to get his number. Thanks heaps!

A Family Holiday Photo From July
Hi all, I just liked to share a photo snap from our family driving/camping holiday we did this June/July. We drove with our camper from Victoria (AUS) up the east coast as far as Cape Tribuation & Cooktown. (Hope to go back to Cape Trib very soon!!!!!) Anyway, on our way back down the coast we stayed at Emerald, Queensland, Lake Maraboon. There were lorrikeets everywhere! Lucky we were on our way home, this stop over made me homesick for my BABIES (budgies) waiting for me at home! Photo of my daughter having a ball!!!!

How To Read A Legring?
Thanks maesie, I have a hen with "BCV JM2 X8 093", and a recent purchase with "BCV AR4 X8 045". The reason for wanting to know the breeder, is that I purchased a couple of birds at the same time from the same place and wanted to know if they were related for breeding purposes. The other birds I purchased don't have club codes, but that probably doesn't necessarily mean that it wasn't from the same breeder, (I guess). Thanks Kazzy

How To Read A Legring?
I rang the club initialled on one of my budgies legrings and they put me onto the breeder. Is there a list of codes somewhere stating what the club name is?

How To Read A Legring?
Thanks Trish for that link. I had been searching the forums but just didn't find it. Do you know if there is a way to contact the breeder on the ring without being a member of a club?

How To Read A Legring?
Hi all, I have a few birds in my avairy that have legrings. From my understaning the BCV(Budgie Council of Victoria) rings can be like this "BCV )6 0001". But I have also seen them different with more letters printed after the "BCV", and also seen rings without BCV. I know every 6 years the colour of the ring changes with the year and a symbol printed but I am still a bit confused. Can anyone explain how to read these? Also can you tell who the breeder is by the legring? Is there a way to contact them without being a member of a club? Thanks all.

Some Pictures Of My Budgies
Hi Mel, firstly thanks heeps for your kind words about my BABIES! I have only started to breed budgies this year (mostly of the pet variety) I've had 13 successful babies so far, from 5 different pairings. (and learn something new through every clutch) Secondly, I should mention that Chord has helped me immensely this year with breeding tips and what to look out for in a good budgie. All the photos of the budgies I have posted so far I have purchsed from pet shops and local breeders, with the intention to breed them myself. I personally look out for colour and stance in a budgie first, then way up the size of the bird for breeding qualities.I have to give Chord recognition also for the cinnamon, sky, yellow face, dominant pied hen that you mentioned. I got her from Chord (who bred her). Checkout her flock threads, she has more photos of brothers and sisters from the first clutch. When I saw those babies feather up, I bags'ed the best chick out of the next clutch. They are so pretty. Thanks for looking and welcome to the forums. :grouphug: Thanks Liv, she was one of my first budgies I purchased at the start of the year. Since that photo, she has come into breeding condition (crusty cere) and has paired up with a big sky blue norm cock. I was waiting till after summer heat to try and get bubs.

Neville - And Everybody - Please Take A Look At Sky And Tell Me Dom. P
I'm having a guess here (maybe Neville can correct me, if I'm wrong). I reckon a sky, full-body-color greywing (one greywing gene and one clearwing gene), opaline, dominant pied. :budgiedance:

Questions
I always like to quarantine any new birds I purchase into an empty breeding cage for at least 4 weeks. Sometimes I use this time to pair a newbie up with an existing bird from my flock... taking the chance of maybe losing one bird to an infection. I just can't watch a single bird in a cage for that long, they go mad without company!!!! I also like to ask the seller when the last time they used ivermectin on the bird, as I like to give new birds a dose as a part of quarantiene. However too frequent dosing can give birds fits or even kill them. Of course when any of my birds are restricted to a small area like a breeding cage, I try to give them plenty of vegetables, grasses and eucalyptus leaves as well as iodine & calcium treats. The seed I use is from my local grain store, (Chord got me onto this idea), however I put 2 boxes of 2kg "Whistler" budgie seed and mix it into the 20 kg bag of budgie mix from the grain store, just to spice it up a bit. If you try and keep a good well balanced feeding regiume for your budgies and year round (not just during breeding season) then when you do decide to breed a pair (providing they are not molting) they will be ready to go anytime. Hope this helps..... Kazzy

Pairing In The Breeding Cabinet
I'm just new to this forum, but this thread is amazing. It took me about 1 hour to read it last week. I can't believe that your babies have so much feathers to unroll when they are babies. No wonder you have already done well with them. Very informative. Thanks for sharing Kaz. PS Can I use the $235 thing on my husband the next time I spend big on budgies?

Wormers
Personally I use ivermectin, about every 6 mths. (one drop on the back of the neck - where the bird can't reach it) I have purchased it from my local vet who diluted the dose so its appropriate for birds. It apparently kills all internal & external parrisites. (including mites) I usually make sure that I coincide the treatment with the start of the breeding season so that all birds are in the best condition before breeding. That brings another question about: I noticed ivermectin in the local grain store, but it was in a large bottle suitable for cattle. Has anyone diluted ivermectin themselves? If so, any tips?

Some Pictures Of My Budgies
I know what you mean. When I first started getting into budgies, I flipped through some books and saw a beautiful white lacewing. Since then I litterally dreamt about my "dream" budgie (white lacewing). About 2 months ago I found one in a pet shop and was so excited I was getting to own one!!! My Dream Budgie!!!!  I am going to try and breed some lacewing split cocks from my two hens so I can breed some (hopefully!) I have checked out Kaz's Lacewings..... She has some beautiful ones. As you can see I have 2 lacewing hens but I would love a lacewing cock or even a split cock. It would save me a couple of years of breeding. PS. I also have a soft spot for all cinnamons. PSS. I took some great shots of my fallows today. So cute...... My hen is very sleepy usually and was woken from mate (who is ment to be split for fallow) Check it out: "Hey wake up! I Loooove You." "It's not gunna happen - I have a headache."

What Babies Will I Get!
I agree. They do look like dominant pieds. They seem to have clear patches on the back of their heads.

You Know You Are A Budgie Nut When.....
80. When you drive the kids to school and notice a broken branch on the side of the road..... you do a mental note to pick it up on the way home for the aviary, then realise you just went through a round about ...... Did you give way? 81. When you can never walk past a vacant block without scanning for grass seeds or milk weed. 82. When you walk outside and hear silence .... you have to check that all is well in the aviary. 83. When weeding your garden takes twice as long, because every worm or grub must be kept for the quail. 84. When the last thing you think about when you lay your head on your pillow at night is "which budgies to pair up next". 85. When you start using "birds" as currency between friends

What Babies Will I Get!
Does either of the birds have iris rings? Do you know how old they are? If they don't have iris rings.... then both of them are recessive pied. You'll get recessive pied babies from them. Cheers Kazzy
