Welcome! I'm a bit of a quiet one myself too, however you do learn alot here about different peoples ideas and techniques. And I'm sure you have lots of knowledge to pass to others. Can't wait to see some of your birds!
  4. Sorry Pearce, I thought that may have been the case after I posted. They look beautiful!
  5. Excuse me, I don't want to ruffle any feathers (excuse the pun) but it looks as if the light green spangle may have splayed legs. I could be wrong..... maybe the photo isn't showing up correctly.
  6. I have a stinky mouse dead in my bedroom wall at the moment..... I went to bed last night with oils burning. Don't know if the smell of the oils or the dead rat was worse, but I didn't sleep much. It also might have something to do with that our eaves near our bedroom aren't finished yet BUT....... I have discovered a great way to kill mice without getting pellets brought into the aviary and our dog is safe too. You get a piece of poly pipe used for downpipes (about 3 ft long), drill two holes through the centre (in one side and out the other). Get a rat bait block and drill a hole through it. Then with some wire, secure the bait block inside the pipe, using the holes you have drilled. Your four legged friends can't get to the bait because its too far in the pipe and it encourages the mice to travel through the pipe (as they would!) and presto bait to eat. I have positioned at least 3 of these traps around the outside of the aviary. We have killed at least 5 mice so far(that we have found) :celebrate:

Hi "bird lady"! This site does get a bit addictive. I noticed you live in Traralgon. Theres a few of us on here from the east side of Melbourne. I'm in Warragul. Welcome!
  8. Congratualtions JB! Thats sounds really great. Goodluck with building!
  9. Ouch.... every time is see these type of pictures I cringe. A very curable disease just left to ravage these poor birds.
  10. Wow what an ordeal! Very informative, what a rescue! I myself have lost a hen to egg binding, and know how quickly you need to react to have any hope of saving them. I'm so happy for your that she pulled through.
  11. I'm reading too. Its great to see pictures of babies feathering up!

Welcome peep. I don't know if it is too late to tame Beanie. I have my birds in an outside aviary, and the ones that come to me are the babies I have bred or purchased quite young.
  13. Hey I felt to too in Warragul. Biggest one I've experienced in years. Heard on the news last night it was 4.6 ricter and epicentre was at Korumburra. (Just about 40kms from Warragul)
  14. Good news Now make sure that there is lots of good and easy food available to the mum. Also put loose seed ( half to a full cupful no containers ) and millet sprays in the nestbox with her. If she can eat this kind of thing in the nestbox she will be more tempted to deliver the food straight to the chicks. This is a great idea that I have adopted with my breeding. Not only does the hen get a chance to keep her health up when the babies are at the newborn stage, but the older chicks get a real good practise at cracking seeds on their own before they even leave the nest.
  15. Okay, okay..... It was a bit tricky getting photos of the bubs today. Number 3 got away from me and had a little fly around the laundry. It reminded me of a recent comment Kaz left about babies flying before you think they are ready. This chick is still in the box and hasn't come out by itself yet. Lucky I was inside! Photos of bubs as today: Chick 1 Chick 2 Chick 3 Chick 4 Chick 5
  16. Congratulations Dean, when I saw this photo I knew that mine had no chance! Soooooooo cute!
  17. Can't wait to see these guys and their babies. Pretty birds!
  18. That's fantastic! I was wondering how these guys were going. Yes, we need photos!!!!
  19. Olives cheek patch is a strong violet colour, grey greens (greys) have a steely blue/grey coloured cheek patch. Also Olives have a navy blue tail and grey greens have a black tail. Except in the case of a cinnamon grey or cinnamon grey/green, the tail would be cinnamon instead of black.
  20. Okay...... My first chick ventured out the box today! So I thought it would be time for new pictures and tell me if I got the sexes of each one right. 1st Chick: Cock 2nd Chick: Cock 3rd Chick: Hen 4th Chick: Hen 5th Chick: I'm undecided yet as to cock or hen
  21. Thankyou so much. I love my aviary. I drink my morning coffee on the porch and enjoy the birds before a hectic day starts. I don't know what I would do now without it!
  22. He is beautiful!!!!!

The flight space is great! Your birds should be happy! I agree with the mice thing. I like to provide my quail and budgies with grass too, but it makes the mice and rats easier to get in. A cheap idea to create a barrier is to go down to your local brick supplier and ask for a discount on any broken pavers. I lined the inside perimeter of my aviary with large pavers this way, and only paid $10 for about a dozen pavers. (All with minimal damage to them) We also mudded any extra holes with mortar, just to be on the safe side. Once again, great setup!
  24. Can't wait to see this chick grow up! She is beautiful!
