Colony Breeding Versus Cabinets:
Sorry to hear that Norm. But this can occur in breeding cages when the Hen wants to start another round. It happen last week to me. The hen ripped off one of the chicks beak and I had to put it down. Out of all the breeding i've done in the two years this is the first and only time to date. But it can happen. Just be aware of that. The cock can also attack the chicks.. I have seen chicks attack the parents too.

Current Project
Macka I have a good friend that has a true saying. "If it works for you, don't change it" I have always used concaves with a hand full of wood shavings. Some hens throw the whole lot out, some part and some none. But it works for me so I'll stick to it. :fear

Current Project
Macka got a call from Dave Ganzer. He was at Bob Smiths yesterday. Bob has the concave until the chicks are old enough and then removes the concave and replaces it with a timber version of your Ice cream container. Full of wood shavings. He then can clean the concave ready for the next round or pair. I am thinking of going that way as all my nest boxes are made to the same plan. Same as yours Kaz. :budgiedance:

Current Project
I have been commissioned to do a triple breeding cage. With the things I have learned I am doing a new style. I think it's better than the ones I use. I am waiting for a third front and the metal trays. I also need to do the concaves in the nest boxes. But with luck all will be completed by this weekend. As you can see I have used square perches to help the breeding pair. Also there are three different sized perches to excersize their feet. $150.00 delivered to the new owner.

How Do I Fatten Up My New Budgies?
Patches see if you can get some Budgie Starter. Soak 1/4 cup hulled oats over night or 24 hours. Drain and add a 1/4 budgie starter. Give that to them that will help build them up. I soak my oats in hot water with avicleans in it to stop bacteria.

What Are Air Sack Mites?
I wouldn't worry about Air Sac mites they are not common in budgerigars but Breathing disorder are. A trip to the vet might be in order.

Injured Budgie Question
Give him a wash in warm water with a bit of Baby Shampoo. If you can get some Fido wash, a couple of drops will help with any lice problems.
-
Droppings & Breathing
I agree with Elly. Even Show Budgies don't have droppings "Stick" to their feathers unless they are stressed or something else.

Injured Budgie Question
You think you've had a hard day. I lost the Krang Bird. Picture in my Avatar on Thursday. He was dead when I got home. He had been sick for some months. I checked the breeding pairs and found a chick 25 days old missing the top beak. The first bird I had to dispatched. Not a very good experience and I am still not over it. Last night I came home to find 4 fertile eggs that I was given to me and was about to start hatching tomorrow all eaten by the fostered pair. I have not had a great week. :ausb:

Dying Chick
Should be at Blood Temperature or the chick will chill and die.

Venturing Out Too Early...?
As Macka Said you need a deep nest box to keep them in longer. Deep enough so they don't get out when you look. Deep enough so they don't get out the hole too early. I place a 35 mm block with a 20 mm concave. (Not shown) I have made this on thicker.

Liquid Vitamins,...
One thing to remember is that budgies can go 42 days with out water.. So if they don't drink it straight away, don't worry too much.

Budgie Mortality.
Luckily to date I have only had two plants needed. Touch wood that won't change.

Convenience Tip
Apparently the idea is that he takes the bag of frozen veg to the aviary "WITH" a cup of coffee. The birds gets the veg and he sits back with the Coffee and relaxes..
-
"who Are The Parents?"
Thats the idea I had to stop and have a think about it. Having a throw back to the wide stage is not common with these matings.

Convenience Tip
Great tip. I have heard a breed uses frozen veges from the supermarket. Just puts the frozen veges in a tray and puts it in the flights. The birds eat it as soon as it thaws. He does this in summer so it doesn't take long.

Feather Town Breeding Room
I use boiling water to spray the show birds. It mists to warm before hitting the birds. So it's not a shock. You can try that on your hand first 30 to 45 cm is the distance.

Work On Breeding Room/area
Always take your time and do it right the first time. It does save money.. I am making a triple breeding cage for a buyer. The one I am building is better than mine. I have fixed the little problems I found with mine. Next set I build for myself will be delux. Let me know if you need help.

"who Are The Parents?"
Yes I should have said it was a yellow lace wing.. Pair three was the parents.

"who Are The Parents?"
As some of you know I foster eggs to help the hens with larger clutches or if the hen has laid a third clutch that I don't want her to feed. I have done this regularly an always try to place the eggs with pairs that are not compatable genetically. This is so it is easly to find the chick latter. For example I would place a egg from a pair of spangles to a pair of recessives. That way the odd chick out is the spangles. But I have a small problem...... Pair 1 Cinnamon grey to yellowface cinnamon sky blue. Pair 2 Malenistic Skyblue to Melanistic Skyblue Pair 3 Skyblue to Lacewing. (cocks noted first.) Funny chick is a light green normal. Who are the parents??? I have worked it out but interested to see what you come up with and why.
