Everything Old Is New Again ...
Welcome KathW to the forum. We have a broad spectrum of owners and breeders here. Some just have pet birds and enjoy the antics of them. Some breed as a hobbie and some breed for show. We have those that breed in their bedrooms to those that have specially designed breeding rooms and flights. I am glad you droped in and hope you feel welcomed. My interest is in Spangles, Dominant pieds and Danish recessives. You can read my back ground in my web site. Just click on my signature below.

Colony Breeding
The best thing about breeding cages is on the show side. The parents get to feed the chicks longer and the chicks put on more weight as they can't get out to flight about. Mine are in the nest till about 4 to 5 weeks and then in the breeding cage until 6 weeks or untill they learn how to feed themselves. Then I place them in a nursary with other chicks untill they are 3 months old. They are then transfered to a juvinile flight untill they are 6 months old. It is at this point wether they are good enough to stay or to be shipped out. By this time they are very healthy and strong.

How To Use A Crop Needle
Can I add one thing, It is a life saver to use acrop needle but becareful, some birds react and take fits. I have one that I though died but it came back. Like any thing, there is a hazard and so long as you know this and prepare, most times things will be okay. I got a nurse to show me and I found a couple of things to do better.

Examples Of Breeding Ready Hens
I would try hitting them up with some sparks a week or two before you pair up. I catch up the hen on a wednesday and put her in the breeding cage with the nest bow ready to go. The cock is then introduced on the saturday. Egg usually arrive (not all the time) on the following sunday.

Examples Of Breeding Ready Hens
There is no hard and fast rule with Breeding or all the breeders would be top breeders. What works for one person maybe different to another. That is why you can buy a good hen from someone and find it won't lay for you. Different surroundings, different management etc.. I have recieved a cock that wouldn't breed and got two rounds of chicks off him. I have also receieved a hen that was a good breeder and can't get eggs. The good rule is to know your birds. They will tell you when they want to go down.

What Do I Do?
I would wait until morning when it warms up and take down the box and see what condition the chicks are in. If the nes is soiled you should clean it and add some fresh wood shavings. If the chicks feet are caked with gunk you should clean the feet in warm water. If they are left to cake on for a long period, they will be crimpled. A chick can double its weight and size every few days and so it doesn't take long for damage to occur. Nest boxes should be checked twice a day for dead or troubled chicks or parents.

Examples Of Breeding Ready Hens
Very good points. Splat you can breed hens in that conditions but as Feathers and macka's said it is the start. It is not the only indication of a hen's breeding condition. She must be flerting witht the cocks and chewing everything in sight. I have an opaline grey hen from Joe Darman and she has a blue cere.. It will be a bit harder but I think I can breed from her..,.... going to try anyway.

What Do I Do?
I am a bit confused about the location and positioning of the Nest box. You say you can't reach it but can lift the lid to look in but can't see the chick's feet. Is it possible to take a photo so we can help you more?

Examples Of Breeding Ready Hens
I was talking to a friend in the club yesterday and was told that when the birds came back from the nationals that were put in a holding cage. There was 7 from this breeder. A few days later, when checked he could only find 6. On the end of the holding cage was an old show cage that was used to train nest feathers. The 7th was a hen and had made a nest in the show cage. He didn't destrub her and she when on to have 3 eggs all fertile. The sire is unknown at the moment and the eggs have been fostered out.

How Fragile Are Budgie Eggs And How Do I Candle?
Feathers, thats the same torch that I use. Very good. I also like your nest cards. I have an Excel spread sheet that prints out the cards on A5 paper. My web site is down at the moment, Server crashed at the ISP so when they get it up i'll up load the spread sheet.

Eucalyptus For Budgies
It is also a go way to bring the hens into breeding condition. In 10 days time we have the Winter Solstis [sp?] and then the hens will start to get in to condition. Having said that, I have one pair courting through the wire of the aviary after the rain we received. So that have been paired up.

Whay Would Be Best
Crested are not that common as Macka says.. We call them flat tops in the "Trade" not to be unkind but that is a common name for them. We have a crested breeder in our club and I hear it's not that easy to breed. Macka is right, if you can get a created and breed to a good normal and then take it from there.
