  1. Last week I bought a big bag of seed from the pet shop. I only just opened it today to find bugs that looked like tics crawling through it! I will be getting seed from my club as soon as their order goes in but was just wondering if this has happened to anyone else? I took it back to the pet shop and he gave me another bag (great...not) which I have checked and is bug free. The owner says he buys in bulk and bags it himself and we checked many of the other bags and did not find bugs?
  2. Mine is what my friends call me, Trish, but my birth name is Patricia (only used if I am in trouble, ha ha ha)!

At the very bottom of the door is the main tray and they can't get past this. so the actual flight area is alot smaller and doesnt go down to the bars you mentioned. P.S. Thanks for helping everyone. :DI just went over the whole cage and there is one area that is 1.8 cm. It is only in one spot but I wont chance it on my budgies. Definately for Tiels or bigger. I love masked lovebirds, would they be o.k. in here?

I have been given a new cage and need to know if a bar spacing of 1.3 cm or 13mm is o.k? Thanks, Trish.

I have placed "Aviary wanted" signs around town and have been checking the local papers for a second hand Aviary. The local hardware store had a small one for $520, which I couldnt afford. Today I noticed one for sale an hours drive from me and went to check it out. It was 2300mm wide 1950mm high and 1550mm deep, the same as this one on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Aviary-Skillion-Roo...1742.m153.l1262 As luck turns out it was an ex-show breeder and I also managed to buy 13 cage fronts for making breeding cages, plus trays, perches and 10 breeding boxes (as he is retiring to travel Oz) for the grand ol' price of $240! Woo hoo I am a happy girl and my patience paid off! Now I have to organize a concrete slab etc and wait for hubby to get some time off! In the meantime I will prepare a nice spot in the garden to put it. I'll keep you posted, I go to pick it up on the weekend
  11. She looks so pretty I cant wait for a clearer photo! yellow face type 2 dilute? I have one like her but it is a boy, his name is Sherbet!
  12. Just an update, I awoke this morning fearing the worst and checked on the new plain paper at the bottom of the cage and it was more solid than yesterday! I went to the pet shop and explained what had been happening but he said he does not keep records of where his birds come from. He said if it died he would replace it! While I was there I checked the cage where she came from. I noticed a cock bird almost identical to her with a green ring on (she has orange/gold) and then some baby budgies that looked like her and him. I am wondering if she is depressed as she has been taken away from her partner and babies? I asked the pet shop owner but he was unsure? I was half tempted to buy him for her but wanted to check with you guys first? I asked him about if there were any Avian vets and he said no, just the normal vets so I left it at that! I bought some canary seed and Bickfords Rasperry cordial, some mesh ball toys for her and headed home. I slowly and gently offered her the Canary seed which she scoffed for a couple of seconds and then stopped. I made up the cordial to my tastes so I hope this is O.K.? I'll keep updating and hope she improves, there appears to be only one loose poop today and the rest appear normal. Look forward to hearing from you all, Trish x
  13. okay Liv thanks so much. I have no red cordial and no canary seed but will do that first thing in the morning. The shops here shut at 7.30pm (in the sticks). I will go back to the pet shop 45 mins away, should I bring her (probably unduly stress her though). Ill get handrearing mix and a crop needle if they have it and some canary seed and red cordial (the pure stuff). Ill try to get the breeders details if they are forthcoming with it. Also there are a couple of Vets in that town maybe one of them is in the know with birds, I know there are no Avain vets but maybe one of them has a special interest and is more knowledgeable than the rest? God knows I need to find someone close! I have given her budgie seed, soaked sunflower seed, millet spray and water. I have not had a chance to worm her because as soon as I noticed the not eating and sloppy poo I decided to wait.
  14. I have only had this bird since Friday from a pet shop, I am not experienced at crop feeding. I can feel her breast bone but have never felt one before so I dont know if this is an indication. The photo above was taken on Saturday, do you need a more recent one? I am in Western Victoria, 6.5 hours away from Melbourne or Adelaide, where the nearest Avian vet would be. Maybe taking her back to the pet shop might be an idea as he can let the breeder know the problem, maybe it has arisen in their aviary or the reason they got rid of her?
  15. I had posted a reply and my internet crashed! I'll try again. I have taken pics of the poop on the newspaper but to further investigate I just now went and put clear paper (no print) on the bottom for a clearer look. Here are the pics of poop on newspaper and the bird in question: Physically the bird appears to be healthy:
  16. My new bird has the following symptom (below) as found in the thread "Poopology" I also read in the other article on Normal and Abnormal bird droppings that it can be caused by stress (my bird has been moved and quarantined after purchase). I am just wondering what everyone on here thought and any ideas to fix it? Shouls I post a picture of droppings also? Thanks, Trish. P.S.I must add that she hardly eats except for a little millet (as Liv suggested)
  17. For those that might need one of these!
  18. My "multifunction" egg torch from KAZ DIRECT, arrived in the mail! "What can we use the laser pointer for?" I hear you ask! I have the answer for you! A FELINE EXERSIZER! "Get that lazy cat moving with Kaz's state of the art laser pointer!" BELOW: See the pointer in action as modelled by my no longer overweight feline friend Mojo! Torches come in a classy burgundy colour and are just $12 for the torch and $4.20 postage in Australia. (Pictured below).
  19. So pretty, congrats! I can't wait to follow the progress of chick 3 in particular :bump:
  20. Did you take any photos?
  21. When I look at her poop the white watery bit has soaked into the newspaper and the green stuff is normal consistency. I'll put some Millett in too. I noticed her a while ago when I was in the pet shop when I got the pet~type pastels...that reminds me she was in the same cage as the others I got does that mean she doesn't have to be in quarantine from them? It was only a week or two ago that I got them! Someone must have done a serious cull as there are some beautiful birds there but I am only needing two hens as I might not be breeding from two that I have already (not in great condition, one hunches over and the other looks past it). When she has been quarantined and when she is condition I was hoping to put her with the green boy pictured below.
  22. This hen followed me home yesterday. She has the sweetest baby face but has a ring showing SA 06 5905 I take it that 06 is 2006? Is anyone able to help with their detective skills to work out who she came from? For the photo junkies (all of us) I have posted some pics! Her cheek spots are so beautiful, they look blue in the picture but in fact are a gorgeous bright grey colour. I am concerned as she hasn't eaten as yet and I got her yesterday afternoon, maybe she is missing the company of other birds although this can't be helped as she is in quarantine.
  23. My gosh they grow quick its hard to believe that this is the same chick! He is an absolute stunner!! Tam, will you keep the name Bumble?
  24. Ha ha ha yes I agree, definately need a photo to get a feel for the name!
