  10. Just keep one thing in mind when buying birds,a birds value should be based on it's visual appearance only, no matter who bred it or who it's related to. I agree with this statement from PJI. A bird is worth no more than it looks, no matter what its blood or its breeder. Too many people buy birds based on breeder and pay more than the birds value. Some breeders like to talk a lot "This bird's from my nat line, blar blar blar". But when it comes down to it, they may only ever have had one bird from that line actually go to a nats and win, but after that nothing. These are breeders who usually win from buying top line blood for stupid prices, pair them together and pop out good birds, but when it comes down to it, the birds are not really their work. A good breeder will have at least 5 to 10 years, even more, behind them, and shelves full of trophy's, ribbons etc. If there is none of that be wary. Also remember in the end you need to breed what you find attractive. Try to buy from either champion level breeders or open breeders. As Kaz said, a good cock is worth its weight in gold, so if offered a older one never decline if only very cheep or free as it could be your start- more so than the ones you payed well for. Stick to breeders whom use similar blood lines, your birds are bound to click better than if they all use random different breeders, even if they all buy from top guys in the show rings. And remember, your second generation is always better than you first, so dont cull your first year birds. Use them, and then if not up to scratch with what they produce then cull, not before, as they my hold the right genetics yet be lesser themselves. It's all time and knowing your birds. Only buy hens with forward blow, as with your cocks, as cocks with good blow that hold it flat on their head pass this on to offspring. It's not the size of the blow that counts, it's how it's used. If a cock doesnt hold it well, he will pass this on, unless you put him with a hen who holds her frontal well. Birds should always sit tall and off perch, dont buy slouchers or hens with legs spread apart- it's bull that they lay better. That's just a line. Their chicks are not good because their legs are wide. It's their shoulders you want wide, not their a r s e. If you can get someone who shows birds to come with you before you buy, even if as Kaz said you join a club before you buy anything, you will be amazed what you learn. Also, as Dean said, go to all the shows possible. I do this. You meet heaps of people and get to see the true winners( not the odd winning birds only.) It's these people whom you need to talk to :} good luck

  17. hi squeek well it was advised to me by a well established breeder at nat levels to give carrots daily oranges daily a mix of small parrot 3 scoops to 2 scoops of hulled Otes (however i keep mine in separate dishes as birds eat some seeds more depending on month of year ) beet root daily and silver beet 3 days a week amongst other fresh veg and greens and i .. i give blend of breeders finch mix and breeders budgie half half blend although i just changed it two days ago to one half of breeders canary mix as it has flax and Niger and linseed in it as well as millet (white ) and white canary i put the same blend of breeders budgie (my clubs mix ) half /half i also place red pannican in a separate dish in flights also they get silver beet every 3 days and seed grasses and milk thistle when ever it grows up fresh in yard thats almost everyday they get small shell grit and a chunk of 007 horse salt mineral block (it is completely safe and they love it ) i also would steer clear of the chook feed i did give red hen layer pellets for 6 months but i had a lot of young birds between 6 months in 8 months die with no reason since i stopped it i have had none die i do give thorow horse chaff though and i also was told chicken feeds hold steroids which are not labeled (a friends brother works in the industry and warned me about this true or not i dont know ) all my aviary birds and breeders get same all year round i toss in the odd bolid eggs just cut in half shell in all and a raw beetroot here in their corn on cob now n then when on special i dont ever give soked foods i do put linseed in their seed once a month on tea spoon per half a 4 liter bucket i dont do more than they will eat that day and i mix it in with another half a bucket of seed with out it it sits for fifteen mins before serving they have cuttle bone and calcium blocks and iodine blocks in breeding cages along with pvm (pigon vite mineral powder ) in a finger draw also in finger draw egg in biskit and seaweed (powdered) a tray of grit and chunk of 007 and a sep dish of hulled Otes pannican and a mason jar feeder of my seed mix carrot dayly orange dayly a slice of lemmon weekly dayly seed grass or silver beet in cabinets fresh water no additives im going to try adding soluvite d and trace minerals (from vetta farmin cabinets only )next season
