Help With Mutations, Please
If you see grey markings (like Spangle) on the head and little to no markings between the wings,..plus normal dark wing markings with colour going through the what would have been white stripes on the wings (but are now blue, for instance), that means Opaline.

Help With Mutations, Please
Yes she's Opaline. You can see the difference between her and the new budgie in those pictures if you look at the back of her head and between her wings, and at his. Her markings are grey and very light (and reversed compared to his, they are white with grey markings as opposed to black with white markings), and his are normal and dark. Hope that made sense..

Do Budgies Eat Corn Or Will It Hurt Them
I feed my birds an entire corn cob in the aviary, and they love it, especially chewing off the corn and eating it. I don't know about specific types though.

What Colour Is This Baby Budgie?
From these pictures, what colour/mutation would you say this chick is? I know she is very young to be able to tell, but anyone have some educated guesses? Mainly I'm asking if she now looks Cinnamon and/or Opaline.

Storm And Sunny
Tori must be a Pied, just a very lightly pied. You can see the two white pinfeathers on her head and it looks like the rest will be the normal black. 12 days old now.

Stormy is such a good mum, she filled Tori's crop until the little bub had trouble standing up! Here's a picture of her today, at 11 days old. Growing more and more..

Oh No, Broke Quarantine With My New Bird
I unintentionally broke quarantine with my new bird.... :emoticon112: Okay so last night (late last night) Zorion escaped his cage and was flying around the house. I managed to get the dogs and cat away and finally caught him. Having no idea how he escaped his cage, I had to put him in a different one..Just in case (I was in a hurry) I put him in a cage, in the small, empty, inside aviary. But the aviary is in my room, as are my two breeding pairs at the moment. The aviary is facing away from the cages, but he is still in the same room, and has been the whole night!! I was so relieved to have caught him safely and had to put him in somewhere safer so he couldn't do it again, I completely forgot I had other birds in that room. So, what can I do? Just separate them again and hope for the best--that he is not hiding some sickness, and if so, the birds and their baby did not catch it as well--or what!? Can I keep him in the cage in that room now (he has been there the whole night as I mentioned) or is it best to separate them ASAP? Thanks.

Storm And Sunny
Alright so it could just mean nothing or could mean she is Pied..I love guessing and seeing what turns up at the end! Wow so she could be Opaline as well as Cinnamon? That would be the best thing ever, I knew I might get suprises--what with not knowing any of Sunny's ancestors--but Opaline and Cinnamon would be a very good suprise lol. This look like white down or the normal grey?

Storm And Sunny
Thanks anne101 and mysixbabies, she is gorgeous isn't she! As gorgeous as an unfeathered bird can get lol. Nobody has an answer for my question about the marking on her head?
-
Storm And Sunny
Her mum is a Clearflight Pied, so she could indeed be pied..Is that why the strange marking on her head? Opaline? Do you think she is opaline as well?

Storm And Sunny
Just updating and asking one question! The baby, Tori, is 8 days old and can sit up and move around a lot! What I'm asking about is that she has dark pin feathers all over her, except for a bit on her head. Wondering if it means anything (what her markings are going to look like when she's older) or if it will get darker pin feathers there too, later. It's like a ring, from the top to down the sides of her head.

Got A New Budgie Today
I brought home a new budgie today. He is a 5-6 month old light green Opaline Dilute..I think..I can never recognise Dilutes and Greywings etc, so any help on that front would be great. Isn't he gorgeous? I think I will call him Zorion. (meaning 'happiness')

Really, you think she has plum eyes?! I sort of thought she might have when she hatched, but wasn't really sure..here's a picture from the day she hatched, does that look like plum or black eyes? Oh I so hope she is Cinnamon, it's the only likely colour for her to be, I know Storm isn't split Recessive pied.

Okaay, don't everyone rush to answer lol..Doesn't matter, one baby hatched and that is all for this clutch. Just curious if someone (Kaz?) can tell me if she is in fact a girl or not, I know 5 days is quite quite early but you guys are good at that sort of thing. Would like to know so I can call her Tori or Arian..(if she's a girl or a boy). I'm thinking girl, but that's a very uneducated guess! Those pics are natural light, no flash or anything. Replies would be good!

Only two eggs left unfortunately, one died in the middle of hatching and the other was DIS. The baby in the DIS egg looked to have something wrong with its beak, too, so maybe that was for the best I suppose... Anyway, egg number one out of the two is hatching today! (on day 18 of incubation) Now, I need some advice..I do not want what happened to the last egg that was hatching and then died, because I intervened too late as I was very wary of helping it too early and accidentally killing it myself.. So, the egg that is hatching now (started at 12pm) I want to check on it and candle it to make sure nothing has gone wrong and it's not having trouble, but I most definitely do not want to overcheck and harm it by doing that! So I need to know would it be okay to put it in an incubator and there I can watch its progress without disturbing Storm? Or, do what I've been doing so far, is check on it whenever Storm leaves the nest for a while..because she would know when to leave the nest and not let the eggs cool down or get too dry wouldn't she? Don't tell me to calm down and leave it please .. because I just want to keep an eye on it and make sure it's alright, as I really do not want what happened to the first baby to happen to this one.. Also, I've noticed that its shell is quite discoloured..a sort of purply colour around the top, is that a bad thing or..? I really don't know what that means, the baby is very active and peeping in the shell so it seems okay.. Any advice would be great.

Budgie Had 'crest' But On Her Front
A friend and I did a sort of bird-swap, where temporarily she gave me one of her female budgies and I gave her one of mine, to breed with our then unattached males. When my girl came back, she had what looked exactly like a 'crest' (like a crested budgie's head, feathers going out in a whorled pattern from the centre) but it was on her chest. I remember reading about someone who saw a budgie like that in a petshop, and someone commented it might be because of an old wound or stress. Because she went to a new home, then bred, and because it is now moulting out--the reason I can't give you a photo of her like that is she is now moulting it out and looks normal again--I am convinced it was because of stress. Just wanting to hear you guys' thoughts, make sure it wasn't something else. Thanks.

Storm And Sunny
Only 3-6 more days til the first egg hatches!! And all four eggs are fertile, and Storm will probably lay another to replace the addled one, in a couple days.

Storm And Sunny
Sorry those pictures are a little old, they were taken while the birds were still in the aviary. They are currently in a breeding cage by themselves. Any reason not to chuck the dead egg? Storm seems to have stopped at 5, she doesn't have 'egg bum' and usually lays early afternoon..it is now 15 to 4pm and no sixth egg.

Storm And Sunny
Yeah I'm going to keep it in I think, just in case..in any event, it can be used when chicks start to hatch, so they can cuddle up to it.

Storm And Sunny
This is the breeding journal of Storm and Sunny. I haven't made a breeding journal here yet becaue I wasn't sure how the breeding would go..Here are pics of them. I have no idea why, but I always am thinking Sunny is split for ino..no idea if he is, no one knows his parents. So maybe he will be split albino..that would be really cool! So, explain what's happened so far. I put them together on the 7/7. After exactly one week Storm laid an egg, but I think it was infertile and she threw it out. On the 18th she laid another, then another on the 20th. Then I went for the weekend, came back, and 3 eggs were out of the nest..two broken, and one fertile (egg two). I put the fertile one back, just in case. She then laid another one on the 26th, one on the 28th, and one more on the 30th. The sixth one is due today, on the 1st of the 8th. I just candled them: Egg one: Perfectly fine and fertile, I could actually see the chick inside moving a bit when I candled it! It's due to hatch from the 5th-8th or so of this month. Egg two: I have a question about egg two. It was the one thrown out of the nest for who knows how long..24 hours maximum. It used to have veins and all, but now it has an air bubble at the top like normal, the rest of the egg is an orange-yellow with a red spot inside and a red ring as well. She doesn't sit on it anymore, so I'm positive it is addled/dead. Just want to make sure, and if I should remove it then? Egg three: Fine and fertile, it's developing, I could see veins etc. Egg four: Fertile too, maybe. Is a bit young, but does look like it's developing. Egg five: Too young to tell. Very confusing as I'm only guessing (except for egg one, four, and five I'm certain about) which ones were chucked out, what date the others were laid, etc. Could be egg three or two which is addled, doesn't really matter what number though, just means there will be gaps as to when they hatch. It is very good there are so many fertile ones..Sunny has figured out how to mate, obviously..Last time he was to breed with her all the eggs were infertile, as he did everything but mate with her! I'll update when more eggs are laid, if she's going to lay more. Plus when the chick hatches in a couple days!

What Sex Is My Budgie?
Agree with splat, but both are Opaline as well.
