Okay thank you. I'm trying to learn to be able to tell their age..so why do you guys say she is 5 months? Apparently that toy has wire, not string, is that still a problem?

Got a new budgie today! I got a friend to pick her up, so I haven't seen her in person yet. She's a beautiful Mauve Opaline, but I need opinions on her age, I'm not very good at telling that.. I'm guessing she's about somewhere from 6-8 months old?
  3. Thanks for that. I read through it, and I just want to make sure: Assuming they are only Goldenface.. A SF GF paired to a SF GF will have 25% SF GF (yellow all through body), 25% DF GF (yellow restricted to face), and 50% normal white-faces. Right? Though I have another question now. A Goldenface bird (whose yellow was restricted to the face, except for a few feathers on her front) was mated to a normal male. Thier one baby had been fostered (so there could maybe be a mixup) but it was a white-faced baby. The female, according to the explanation, would have to be a DF GF..which would make all her offspring SF GF, yes? How could that work? Also, I've never seen an actual Yellowface bird (not Goldenface) anywhere around here, except show birds..and that has been for years, I've never seen a YF bird in real life. So most likely none of my birds are composites, though of course it could happen, so I'll try and understand that if it ever happens that one of my supposed GF birds has some YF offspring...
  4. What are the different mutations of Goldenface? I know all of my "Yellowface" birds are actually Goldenface, so what would I get if I paired a GF to a GF? What I'm asking is, are there two mutations of Gf like YF (ie, type 1 and 2) and is there a double factor version, making a white-faced bird who will have all GFbabies? I think there must be a variation where the yellow is strictly on the face, and one where the yellow is spread through the body, as I have had birds of both types..whose yellow faces were truly golden, not the pale yellow of Yellowfaces.

Okay, I'd say they are: 1- Normal Green 2- Green Spangle 3- Green Opaline 4- Normal Skyblue (could just be the photos but it looks yellowface?) 5- Skyblue Spangle
  6. Yes that is wha I meant! Sorry, didn't exactly word it very well. NOWBUDGIE, hope this helps you, though you have chances of getting some suprise chicks too!
  7. No, I didn't mean a Rec Pied split for Dominant Pied. What I meant was I'm pretty sure that there can be Dominant Recessive Pieds. (from both parents being split Rec. Pied and one parent being Dominant Pied).
  8. Dom Pied Green male to a Grey Rec Pied female.. Would probably be half normal chicks, half Dominant Pieds. All split for Recessive Pied. 50% Greens (or blues, if the male is split blue) and 50% Grey-greens or Greys. If father isn't split blue, all greens and grey-greens split blue. If he is, some blues, greys, greens, and grey-greens. Also maybe some DF Dominant Pieds if the female is hiding Dominant Pied. If the female's parents were a normal Grey and a Dominant Pied, she is most likely Dominant Pied. Hope that made sense and helped.
  9. The second recessive pied is definitely male, probably the first too. The DEC looks male as well, but need a better picture of him/her. By the way, your babies are beautiful!
  10. Sorry for having asked about her so many times, it's just that she's a mystery..but it sounds like we're back to the old 'I'll find out once I breed her' thing, so I can't wait for March, when I'll breed her! I've always thought she's some sort of Lacewing Dilute or Greywing or something similar, especially since I can't see an Albino..no matter how visible her markings...having a pink coloured cheek patch. Plus I hope she is Lacewing, as I've never had one before and I think they look gorgeous! Thank you very much for your help by the way. It would be really great if perhaps you could post some pictures of the birds you're talking about above, (the ones that look like Ashley does) so I can compare?
  11. In the first photos she was beginning to get sick (they were the best photos I could find however) but they are older photos, she is okay now. I don't know..why would an Albino have pink cheek patches instead of white? In almost all lights, her cheek patches look pink. Sometimes, very rarely, they look white-ish, but never as white as my DEC for example, who definitely has very white cheek patches. I finally uploaded some short movies, I just quickly made two just to show what she looks like, so don't mind how badly done they are lol. Hope it helps in showing her colours. http://s532.photobucket.com/albums/ee330/J...opyofMOV029.flv http://s532.photobucket.com/albums/ee330/J...opyofMOV028.flv
  12. I've asked about Ashley and mentioned her before, as to what mutation she is. Now I have to bring it up again! She is a lot younger than I assumed, and now that she has just recently finished a big moult her colours and markings are a lot more visible than they were previously. I am positive she is NOT a Yellowface Albino..for these reasons. She is white and yellow with red eyes, but she has pink cheek patches and grey markings on her wings, head, neck, and cheek spots too. I know that Albinos do not have pink cheek patches but have white ones, and having pink cheek patches make her not Albino. Before anyone asks, her colour and markings unfortunately do not show up very well at all in photos, so I chose the pics that showed them the best..though it still does not do her justice. She has a lot more markings and colour in real life. The first picture you can see her markings and pink cheek patches, same with the second and third pictures. The fourth one just shows you her wing markings..albeit not very well. So, what is she? I believe she is an Opaline (because of the markings on her wings and the way the yellow is on her wings and head too) Lacewing, but with something diluting her colour. Opinions please? What can I breed her with to find out for sure? (I was thinking of breeding her with the male she has bonded with, and then when her male offspring are old enough, breeding them to a random unrelated female and seeing what their daughters are like.) Replies soon would be wonderful. Thanks. Strangely enough a movie shows the colour accurately as opposed to a picture, but I don't know how to upload a movie (.MOD or .MOI) in photobucket? Edit: I changed the file extension to mpg so photobucket recognises it and I can upload it..I don't know how to post it though, just post the link to the site where it is? I am uploading a short movie of her now, but it is taking a while.
  13. The one on the right in the first picture looks male, but the other two are definitely girls.
  14. So the male is 5 months and the female is 9 months..you mean 9 months now or 9 months when I got her? Can I ask why you say they are those ages, I'm really not sure how to tell other than when they are older than 3 months!
  15. When I got him on the 18th of the 8th, Zorion looked like this. He had no bars on his head, had a faint iris ring, and his cere was pretty much all pink with some blue. Now he looks like this, about the same but with a white iris ring and his cere is slowly turning blue. About how old does he look? I'm guessing he'd be about 6 months old now, making him around 4 months in the first picture.. Now he looks a whole lot less babyish and is flirting madly and mating with one of the females in the aviary, and based on that, his iris ring and how he looked before I think that he was about 3-4 months old in the first picture. Also, how old does this bird look? She looked like this when I got her, on the 14th of the 5th: And is like this now: I'm thinking about 1 and 1/2, 2 years old, but I really don't have much of an idea..Got her from the petshop so no clue as to when she was born. Opinions? Also, are either/both of them old enough to breed? I know Ashley (ino girl) would be, but I'm not sure about Zorion, I think he is too young, yes?
  16. Exactly. I said she has pink-ish coloured cheek patches (which is what the normal pale violet ones would look like if diluted) instead of white.
  17. It's a bird I bought a little while ago, probably not a Dilute Lacewing, just some things about it that make me think it might be. Namely red eyes, some markings, and pink (instead of white) cheek patches. But I'm going to breed her and then breed any of her male offspring and see what happens so I know for sure what she is.
  18. Thanks but I've already looked there and there are no Lacewing Dilutes. I'm asking here in case someone does have one or one similar and has not posted it in that forum.. But can anyone answer my question as to what chicks to expect from a Lacewing Opaline Dilute YF female to a Green Opaline Greywing male?
  19. Can anyone please post a picture of a Dilute Opaline Lacewing? (preferably green series, doesn't have to be Opaline though) I really need some pictures of a bird that is a Dilute Lacewing at least, a YF or green series.. Also, what would you get if you mated the above female bird to a Green Opaline Greywing male?
  20. Okay then I shall see then what turns up when they have chicks.
  21. Ah okay. And as Storm has been paired with about 3 different males and all chicks have had white down, (even females) then Storm must be Opaline, though she does not look it.. Well, nothing can be said for certain now until I breed them and see. One of Storm's male offspring is in the breeding cage right now with his mate, and I'll breed one of Storm's daughters to a Greywing too, and see what happens. It is fun finding this stuff out.. Also, one of Storm's offspring, a male, was bred and they only had one baby. Which is male and not Opaline and does not have white down. If some of their babies have white down and some don't, can I safely say the white downed ones are Opaline girls and the grey downed ones are normals? Or will there be a percentage of normal chicks with white down, just because one of their parents were split, or will one parent at least have to be visually Opaline before there are non-Opaline chicks with white down? Hope that made sense, I need to know if I see any of the babies, from this split Opaline male, with white down I'll know they are Opaline girls or if they may just be Opaline-bred normals?
  22. Just looking at those pictures, I'm still not sure Storm is Greywing but I think she is...but really I have no idea. In those pictures, it looks like the Spangle's wing markings are more defined and black, and the Greywing's are greyer and more blurry.. Anyone know the answer to the Opaline question? The baby whose picture I posted a page back it looking to be Spangle and not Opaline, so it is yet another baby that was thought be an Opaline based on the down colour but is not. My question is, does an Opaline-bred (ie, have one Opaline parent) budgie get the white down but is not Opaline themselves? I haven't been able to breed any of Storm's male young yet, so I do not know if they are split Opaline or not.
  23. Albinos do get iris rings, so unless it is masking something like Rec. Pied..then you will be able to tell the approximate age by the iris rings, or lack thereof.
  24. Definitely looks like a male to me. The blue around his nostrils is his cere turning from pink to blue as he matures. But Kaz is more experienced in that sort of thing, I might be wrong.
  25. I know, I meant as in like a green can be split for blue, a green can hide YF. I have no clue as to her parents, she has a ring but I don't know how to find out who bred her? If I can find out, and talk to, whoever bred her then I can know what she is split for, if anything.. Her ring is green and says: CDB 07 117 I think CDB is the initals of the breeder, 07 being the year she was born, and 117 the ring number, right?..If so, how can I find out what breeder leaves near where I got her with the initials CDB? I assume asking the petshop where I got her, as to who supplies them with English budgies, would be the best idea of course.. but is there any sort of list (specific to the club this breeder is probably a member of) of breeders and their names and contact details that any of you know of? Or where I can find one?
