  1. I had one with a leg like that, she's fine now she grew out of it. You wouldn't necessarily have to do it all the time, just keep an eye on it, once it has had a couple of good feeds it will get stronger
  2. JJ aviaries has some nice ones and they mail order, just google them How about this one : CAGE
  3. This ain't no average trap Kaz, I've been using the regular traps with no success, I spent about $50 on snazzy traps!
  4. If it warmed up now you can try takoing the older baby out for an hour and seeing if mum and dad will feed it
  5. I went out late and could hear them but none got caught
  6. In a shock turn of events the oldest chick in my green show pairs nest has white pin feathers!!! So by a massive twist of fate they must both be split blue and happened to pass it on to atleast this baby Both crested and both pied chick plus the two older from the green nest are now rung. The older crested baby is a scrawny little critter though, the down has come through patchy although the developing pin feathers seem to be even so I'm hoping this is just a weird crested thing with the chicks. His crest looks great now as the pins are just breaking through and it never had any down on its head Shall wait and see how it grows
  7. Thebreeding cages are within an aviary with small mesh so a little more protected but still worrying
  8. Around here it's not all that big although you have reminded me to keep a few things in the cupboard just in case. My kids are having a halloween theme at kinder on Wednesday so I'm making them each a little ghost costume (read: easy ) Ummm...what day is it actually on??? The kinder teacher said they were having it early as Friday is a quiet day at kinder so is it on Friday or is it over the weekend?
  9. They're even worse I think here Kaz because of the bushland near the back of the house. I think they mostly get seed that gets kicked out of the flight, etc but I still worry that small ones are squeexing into the cages with the birds. I definately had the hebegebies Don't know why though since I used to have them as pets
  10. Well apart from the bait blocks the main trap is a multi catch one that can catch up to 10 And I almost did scream! I then thought I could here them everywhere as I was out there in the dark as I left my glasses out there, so I ran back inside
  11. After going out last night and actually stepping on the tail of a mouse as it ran across my breeding room floor I raced out this morning and got a whole bunch of mouse trapping equipment plus some bait. I live on the back of bush so they come up in the warm weather looking for water. Anyone want to guess how many mice I will catch tonight, I'll tell you who guessed closest tomorrow night
  12. Best bet is to move the birds out briefly and spray a barrier spray in the areas where the spiders hang out, then get one of those fly jars or the little window stickers for flies
  13. They are double factor spangles, if they were lacewings they would have red eyes When you upload your photos into photobucket use the little drop down box under 'upload photos' to select the 640 X 480 size, that way they'll all automatically be the perfect size
  14. I would leave them where they are
  15. No just make sure that after there isn't too much actual egg sitting in the shell before you microwave it or it won't dry out sufficiently, I keep mine in a little jar in the cupboard. I have however added one of those little silicone sachets that soak up mpoisture just in case
  16. The expensive ones Elly are the ones that don't have any springs, instead they have almost like a system of shock absorber underneath The brand is called springfree and they are quite expensive
  17. Hi Karthik, whenever I use an egg for cooking, etc after I have cracked it I put it in a little bowl and mirowaveit for 20 seconds, this dries it out and makes it brittle. Then I use a mortar and pestle to crush it as fine as possible. I keep a little jar of thes crushed shells and I sprinkle it on their green food or gvie it to them straight in a little dish
  18. It has been a learning experience Elly as this is the first year I have had many pairs breeding at the same time. My main thing that I feel I will do differently next time is to swap chicks where possible to even up the ages as the losses I have had seem to be related to small chicks in nests with much older siblings.
  19. UPDATE Crested pair: smallest chick died, oldest is definately crested and will be green(as expected), 2nd chick at this stage I suspect not crested but time will tell. These two chicks after my drama the other day are now being raised by my pied pair and I'm hoping the crested hen may ly a second clutch now Pied pair: Also lost there youngest. oldest chick is showing white on wings which means the cock is split blue!!!, not sure of colour of second one green show pair: doing a ripper job, they have four chicks and all are looking lovely and healthy, I'm particularly please with the size of the oldest. Not sure if one of these chicks may be the one from the fallow cock that died and his hen, lost track of the egg in the box so I'm not sure if it hatched(two didn't), should be easy to tell though as it would be the only blue chick if it did hatch. ino pair: last their first lot of eggs after the hen stopped sitting, she has now laid two more and is sitting wellso fingers crossed for a succesful clutch this time around.
  20. How long were they at the shop for before they started breeding? I had to move my breeding cages recently and so it put them off again and I'm back to square one. it took the bushies nearly eight weeks to even go into the nest box though befre I moved them. They may just take a while to relax
  21. I've decided I'm going to take a two pronged approach. As well as baiting I'm going to put one of those multi catch metal traps (the non-kill ones). With any luck some of them may end up in there after they've eaten the bait and not be exposed to my pets that way.
  22. You can buy sun globes for birds from Arcadia lighting. They have ones which fit in a normal bayonet or screw lamp fitting so you could put one in your desk lamp and set a timer so it turns on and off at the right times
  23. It wouldn't be placed in the areas where the budgies physically are but there is always the chance of a small one squeezing through the wire and ending up dead in the aviary. I don't know what else to do, they are just too cluey for the traps!! I have never seen any evidence of them in my main aviary, but I have in a smaller one which houses one of my galahs so maybe I'll take the galah out for the moment and put her elsewhere and take the chance.
  24. I've recently become aware of a mouse problem in my breeding room since the weather warmed up. Regular traps aren't doing the job(haven't caught even one!) so I am now considering baiting. Due to the location of my garage(breeding room) I am pretty sure that any mice would actually be nesting within the room itself (there is stuff stored in one end) and not really travelling out of the room as they would have to cross a wide concrete area. Before a small mouse problem becomes a plague I've decided to use Tomcat bait boxes to sort them out. I am going to close the room off from the dogs and cat so they are kept out and that way I should be able to find any dead rodents without having to worry about them too much but my main concern is the birds. What is the chances of one of the birds chewing on a dead mouse if one dies in there in the aviary and I don't spot it until a few hours later?
