Breeding Cute Lil Baby Budgies ... What Could Go Wrong!
Iammore than happy to have visitors whenever I don't yet feel tht my set up is ideal and there are definately things I would change about it if I could but they will be things for when I have my own house where I can do whatever I like. I can show you what I think is good and bad about my set up so that you can do the best you can with what you have

Please Judge These Birds
It really depends where you are willing to go to buy. You're best bet would be to have a look at the Budgerigar Club of Victoria website abd workout who your closest club is and contact their secretary

Please Judge These Birds
I big bird with a good long mask would be ideal. She is a dominant variety so even a normal would be fine to add size. Given she is a grey I would use a grey normal as there are lots of good normal grey show birds floating around Melbourne at the moment May I ask why you suggest green Daz? I have had trouble finding good greens in Melbourne at the moment (they are there but breeders seem to be holding on to them more)

Puppies On Their Way!
Nah I've just worked in enough pet shops and vet clinics to know the difference between a GR and a cocker pup that's all :sadsorry: Also the size is all wrong for a puppy of that age, a GR pup would be about twice the size(atleast), I assume they did it to make it easier for the little girl to have it in her lap and so that the whole litter would actually fit in the drawer :bluebudgie:

Culling
:bluebudgie: Nope they don't add up for me either :sadsorry:

My Diy Dry/wet Mix Powder
I just have lotsof Neocare at the moment as I got a big bag cheap so figured I'd throw some in but might change to a straight probiotic when I use it up. :bluebudgie: What is the ideal amount of salt intake for budgies? Doing head maths, by the time I 'cut' it with the other things I've added it brings it down to about 4% salt, is that too high? Bearing in mind of course that this is only a supplement so it will only forma small portion of their diet, so in reality it's not adding a whole lot of salt. If I make it up as a wet mix then I'll definately add those other things you suggested. Do you think I could add some home drie parsley to the mix I feed dry?

Peach,black,they Dont Exist Do They.
I was wonderin that too, maybe someone worded an ad something like For sale: Budgies, peachface and blacks or something like that, if so the second two would most likely refer to lovebirds

Peach,black,they Dont Exist Do They.
Can you link to the site so we can see which ones you are talking about, there are some black budgies but generally not in Aus

Culling
*sigh, I wish I had more than 50 birds so that I could cull to the top 50 :bluebudgie:

My Diy Dry/wet Mix Powder
Because I have found they don't like the larger pieces (a few will but most won't) so I am hoping if I make it very fine they'll be more inclined to eat it.

Puppies On Their Way!
Has anyone seen that fabric softener ad on TV with the golden retriever putting her puppies in the towel drawer? Look closely because they are actually cocker pups :bluebudgie:

My Diy Dry/wet Mix Powder
I have been experimenting and have come up with this recipe which I am going to try out on this round of nests. If anyone has any thoughts or things they think I should add that would be great. I am going to use it in addition to whole egg powder dry in finger drawers or for when I want to make up a wet mix. Ingredients: 1 cup soup mix (lentils, chick peas, split peas, barley) 1 cup chicken starter 1 tblspn Vetafarm Neocare 1 tblspn Vetafarm budgie starter 2 microwaved or oven dried egg shells coarsely crushed Place all together in a blender and whiz until it's a fine powder I deliberately didn't worry about adding whole egg powder as I figured they would be getting that seperately anyway.

Ino Question
Yep sex linked, The cock is XX and the hen is XY(the opposite of humans). It is carried on the X chromosome so the male needs two copies for it to be viually expressed whereas the hen only needs a single copy.

Dishwashers Make Budgie Mothership Easy!
Seriously the littletiny ones work great. My aunty has just her and her daughter and they have one which is not much bigger than a large microwave and it does about two days worth of their dishes and doesn't use much water

Favourite Mutation (specialisation) And Why?
I am trying to get into spangles and cresteds. I know you have been tracking my birds for sale Jess so you may be interested to know that my tufted pet type currently has three chicks and a bunch more eggs, more info to follow when they start to feather up. I have one crest bred baby from my show cresteds at the moment and they are just starting their second clutch now. Spangles has been put on hold for the moment (unless a miracle happens and Ozzie fills an egg) as I don't have enough birds to breed from, so next year I think

Good Deal On Cage
Sideways would probably be better but takes up more space obviously so it's not always feasible

Ring Change....
I think it's a good change, it will make things easier in the future
-
Ring Change....
okay, well I would say at worst the last chicks will get rung in the first week of January(but hatched this year) so I might just fudge it for those ones, which means I probaby don't need to order any for next year as I'm not planning any winter breeding given I hope to moe house.
-
Ring Change....
You only need to purchase them if you are a member of a club, it's for people who show budgies

Dishwashers Make Budgie Mothership Easy!
Hmmm, something to consider when I build my breeding room at the new place, you can get those mini benchtop ones, the perfect size for cleaning out budgie feeders

Ring Change....
Ta Given my breeding season doesn't really start until September or so I would have seerly over budgeted, I'm glad someone told me ANother question given all my hens are laying/ chicks are hatching now do I ring based on hatch date or ring dat or does it not reallymatter given they'll all be rung around new years?

Ring Change....
okay so when I am buying next years rings should I be budgeting for breeding until September or breeding until December?
