  1. I have to agree with Kaz on the seed. Until I found this site I would often buy homebrand, then I actually sat down and looked at how much of the seed they were eating and realised that by weight they were probably eating only just over half. As cheap as it is if you take into account what they don't eat and double the cost it's pretty darn expensive. Now I buy my seed from a stockfeed supplier and there is never anything left behind :cake:
  2. That is oh so cool Daz. I'm a biology science grad at uni so I find things like that very interesting :cake:
  3. Yep got it :cake:, where are you gettng the other ones from?
  4. You can expect about half greys and half blues, about half dom pied and half normal. That's assuming no funky hidden genes :cake:
  5. YES A breeding bird should have a good balanced diet including fruit and veg as well as appropriate supplementation. Also soaked seed or a commercial soft food can be very useful during this time, especially when the chicks hatch
  6. Cool :cake: So how long should I expect until hatching at this point?
  7. okay I'm going to try and describe this since I can't take a photo. I candled some eggs today as I wanted to move some to another nest as the hen they were under seems to be loosing interest in sitting now that she has three chicks so wanted to move them before it was too late. One of the eggs looks like this: Very dark, basically can't see through it except for at one end where it is empty (the air bubble) and I can see the faintest bit of moment in one spot in the air bubble. Does it sound like this baby is getting ready to hatch? I have left this egg with the hen for the moment as four would be a nice clutch size for her and the other eggs are a fair bit younger.
  8. It's not about the size it's about whether or not the budgies have their own personal space. In a breeding cage the pair doesn't have to worry about another bird harrasing them and trying to steal their nest. What you are trying to do is colony breed and that can be difficult even in the biggest of aviaries. Personally I would be iffy about having two pairs in there but ultimately the decision is yours.
  9. Ifyou are planning on having four pairs in there you will need atleast 8 nest boxes. Personally I think it isn't big enough to have four pairs breeding in it.
  10. Because they are tougher than regular parsley they were actually in the aviary for about three days before I removed them. I put them in a plastic milk bottle full of water to keep them fresh. Of course you have to keep an eye on them and take them out as soon as they start to wilt or if they get dirty
  11. I have just started using a supplement with a higher iodine component in it in my flight, so it will be interesting to see whether my hen with the fatty deposit looses any weight
  12. I can't see how to do it in my settings
  13. I've go the same hat, it's my favorite
  14. I understood every word
  15. I'msitting here typing away and from the next room I can hear my youngest: TV remote in hand he presses a button and puts it to his ear "Hellooo, am spa brab barrar, prayem me? Okaaayy, bah bye" then a minute later " Hellooo amseeem fissies, shssshssss(with swimming hand movements), Okkkayyy, Bah bye Does anyone reckon they can translate
  16. It looks very bulbous which I would say is why Kaz is guessing male, I would have to agree
  17. Wow! It would be unusual for a Aussie to call ANY bird a parakeet. We call them all parrots (eg. red-rumped parrot), parakeet is very american. But if the seller got the info of an american website then it is possible she is referring to any one of those species.
  18. Probablymakes the most sense as I assume some people will be working
  19. Exactly she may be calling them peachface parakeets and really be referring to peachface lovebirds
  20. I'm sure I could make a spare bed for you guys Splat At the moment I have one spangle, not much help for someone who wants to breed spangles
  21. I've been here a fair while Elise and I've already met many of the Melbourne members already Besides they might arrive here and decide I'm the weird person
  22. Hi all, thought I would see if other might be interested in a meet up sometime over the Chrissy period I am happy to play host and it would be a BYO meat and a bottle of drink or a salad type deal. I think I'm probably in not too bad a location for a meet up as I know there are people north and West of Melbourne that might like to come and I am just off the Greensborough end of the ring road (that means not much real Melbourne driving Splat ). It'd be a great chance for everyone to meet each other and even swap or sell a few birds (Splat I have my eye on your spangles ) I have a dog coming to stay with me from chrissy eve until early January who REALLY likes birds(the eat kind of like so very stressful for me) so before or after then would be best for me
