What Do You Look For In Feather Quality?
Mum is a cross between a show type and a pet type according to the original breeder, dad is a large pet type almost identical to aunty. So I guess you could say my girl is 1/4 show type if that makes it easier to understand

The Wait Is Killing Me!
I'm glad I don't breed something that takes ages to be born! 18 days is more than I can handle

Coming up on 10 days and no blood spot even so I think nothing there unfortunately. I'll still leave it in the nest for the moment just incase.

What Do You Look For In Feather Quality?
She is quite large (like I say she is bigger than my adult pet types even as a baby) so she will probably get bred to larger birds anyway as I'd like to increase the size of my pet types a bit(she is from a show line and a pet line). If a few generation down the track I end up with something that is of use all well and good but otherwise she is gorgeous and I am happy to just get pet babies out of her.

What Do You Look For In Feather Quality?
What a shame, seems like such a waste of great symmetrical markings. Ah well I still love her

Laverne,what Colour Is She?
I have a theory Deb which I am going to test. I found some info that said that the spangle birds which show the body colour in their spangles instead of black(or cinnamon) are also carrying opaline. This has been supported in theory in my aviary by one of my blue spangles showing one or two 'opaline' type feathers poking through in between the spangles. I'm gonna see how it goes once I get my breeder boxes set up but you could always test the theory with a clutch and see how it goes.

I'm having lots of fun with this breeding stuff now that I have brought my first pair into the house. Some may recall I posted a week or two about seeing the heart beat inside the egg. Well I candled again today to see if my newer eggs are all on track. Sadly looks as though one is clear so we are probably down to three babies BUT I did get to see the chick moving in the oldest of the eggs. It was VERY cool

Photographing Budgies
It's hard work photographing budgies outside at my place we are on a very windy hill and they tend to get a bit flighty in the small cage. I've been experimenting with taking photos indoors under different light, this isn't too bad:

- What Is The Relationship Between Fallow And Albino?
Given the red eyes I was just wondering if a fallow is related to an albino? (in much the same way that lacewing is a variation on albino) Are fallows a good option to breed to an albino?- What Do You Look For In Feather Quality?
Do show breeders use smaller type birds with their show types sometimes to increase other attributes that the smaller might have but the show type is lacking?(just curious) I guess what I am saying is that she essentially comes from boofy stock (she is a much larger bird than my pet types) but they have been bred out to pet types for a generation or two so they have lost the boofy heads a little. As you can see her mum is a bit closer to the show type with the fluff brain going on- Breeding & Holding Cages For Sale
Dammit, why can't you be in Melbourne!.....Daz do you have "plans" for these cages? I'm pretty good with a saw and a hammer but I need directions ...atleast instructions anyway...- I've Decided To Move Most Of My Budgies Outside
They could always do time share!- Aviary Feeders
Hanging it would be better as it discourages mice. Also use wire not chain as mice will climb chain. I use a wide, flat ceramic outdoors type 'bird feeder' for fresh food. A couple of quails on the ground will help pick up fallen seed too.- What Natural Plant Types Good For Chewing
Karthik is in India Daz It would be best to stick with the tried and true vegies and fruit unless someone you know is already feeding something to their birds.- What Do You Look For In Feather Quality?
If it wasn't for the fact that I don't think she'll be boofy enough(and she's not rung) I felt she was alright from a marking point of view. I have her mother and her aunty but not her dad and she was an only chick. So I have three females from her line. I was planning to hold onto her at this stage for future breeding . but with space at a premium it's a tough call with all my birds at the moment. They haven't been treated for about 4 months, if I treat them now will that get rid of scaly face or do they need a seperate treatment now that they have it? It started when I introduced some birds to the aviary, it was only on the edges of a couple of females and they were just coming in to breeding condition so I didn't think anything of it when they were in quarantine as I thought it was just that but now I'm not so sure.- What Do You Look For In Feather Quality?
Thanks Daz, I was beginning to despare that no-one would answer Do you think she is worth holding onto to put to a large male in the future, I'm obviously not very experienced but her markings seem pretty good to me. She is only 12 weeks and is already larger than all of my pet type adults so I'm hoping she'll boof up a bit more as she develops. Here is a back view:- Home Remedy For Scaly Face?
I already use that one a few times a year Daz so no worries there, they still are looking a little scaly face so I think I haven't been using it often enough. I will talk to my vet about ivermec to clean them up for now and then increase the AIL treatment frequency.- Home Remedy For Scaly Face?
Is that the one that I can get in bottles from stockfeed places Kaz? Mine are all aviary birds so ongoing treatment was something I was concerned about...- Home Remedy For Scaly Face?
Great idea! Better than oil I guess because it stays on a little longer rather than just soaking straight in. Thanks Elly (and Kaz)- Home Remedy For Scaly Face?
I have one or two birds which I am suspicious about whether they may have the start of scaly face. I'd like to treat all the birds just incase but preferably with a natural remedy. Does olive oil work?- What Do You Look For In Feather Quality?
I have heard people speak about feather quality in show birds a few times, what does this mean? I have baby bird that has nice markings and is a small show type that I want to breed to a boofy show type when she is old enough to hopefully get some bigger chicks. I'm trying to understand what I need to look for in a male to improve her... She is only about 12 weeks old at the moment. This is her: This is mum:............................................. And aunty on dad's side: On another note does anyone have a PHOTO of a good dutch pied? I've looked at the standard but sometimes it's nice to look at a real bird to compare. - What Is The Relationship Between Fallow And Albino?
